    This is a great video. I was diagnosed with this a few years ago. My number one symptom was an extremely dry throat, that drinking copious amounts of water couldn't seem to fix. It took several different doctors to figure it out. I made the dietary changes and was prescribed PPIs by my doctor for about a year. I've regained my voice strength/quality, but definitely have to watch how, what, and when I eat, especially before a rehearsal or performance. There is nothing scarier than feeling like you're losing your vocal ability and agility as a singer. Thank you for this, Madeleine.

    Thank you so much for this, I was diagnosed with this in 2020, and unfortunately I was experiencing these symptoms (hoarseness) and wasn't able to see my physician during the lockdown when my symptoms began. I already have experienced hoarseness off and on my whole life due to my JRA and having GERD since the age of 13. So when I finally was able to get into an ENT, it was pretty severe, diagnosis of LPR, Chronic Laryngitis, and Vocal Cord Paralysis. I was told about elevating the bed which wasn't an option, and they ordered Speech Therapy, but that wasn't financially something I could do either. One thing I did learn from the Speech Therapist from my one visit that has helped me more than anything, and isn't something you mentioned in this video, and that's Breathing Techniques. I had begun doing Deep Breathing Routines multiple times daily, as my Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist had instructed me to for my pelvic floor muscles. Due to all the complexity of LPR, I had developed the habit of shallow breathing, and retraining myself to breathe properly, immediately will relax everything in my body from top to bottom. This will fix the hoarseness by the time I finish a 20 minute deep breathing routine. Just thought this might be helpful to other singers and speakers as my Speech Therapist said this is the number one thing I should be doing. And you're correct it's unique to all of us, and this could help someone but not all. The rest of the info provided here is amazing!

A massive improvement, I still take gaviscon advance at night though as I only get reflux when I sleep, I make sure to not eat 3-4 hours before bed, and try to eat as healthy as I can, if I do eat any junk food I do it earlier in the day so it digests before I go to bed. I take melatonin before bed too which helps! Stress has been a massive cause for me so I do lots of self care, and time to relax so I don't get into fight or flight mode as often. Hi Madeleine. Thank you for sharing all these singing videos. They're helping me a lot. I suffered from painful acid reflux for years and it made singing really challenging. My painful heartburn symptoms eventually went away but I felt like my singing voice never really recovered. Then recently I started mixing water with a little baking soda and putting it in a little nasal spray bottle. (There are youtube videos describing this.) Each morning and each night I mist that baking soda/water solution into my mouth as I inhale. I also spray it up my nose as I inhale. This is really easy, doesn't taste that bad, no side effects. I think this is the most effective way to deal with the pepsin on the vocal folds, and it helped me a lot within a couple of weeks. Now I can sing without having to clear my throat. --- I also drink a little glass of alkaline water before bed and again when I wake up.

      Lpr is due to less acid in your stomach. for esophageal sphincter to close tightly so that acid do not enter food pipe, pH should be low. Alkaline water will increase the pH.

    • @gravejames7221
      @gravejames7221 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alicandogan2690 he isnt talking about using baking soda for the gut. its merely used in this context to help clean the acid pepsin enzym from the voice box which is impossible by drinking it. so inhaling it seems work. wow. pretty interesting.

    • @gravejames7221
      @gravejames7221 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sunilyt4 alkeline water is not strong enough to reduce the acid as quickly as anti acid meds will. also, you should be taking pepsin stomach acid supplements with apple cider vinegar to help refill the stomach acid. using a straw. this, along with cutting carbs for a while, will not only refill the acid, but the bacteria that has overgrown will die off because they feed on undigested carbs, and they produce gas which causes reflux as well. so your killing 2 birds with one stone. kill the bacteria, and refill the acid. the alkeline water will be very minimal in having any real effect in this process mostly but even then, gargling it couldnt hurt. along with spraying some baking soda water in your nose and inhaling it as mist too. protecting the voice box from acid and pepsin.

    I remember reading that our stomach needs raw vegetables to chew on. This activates the acids to work on breaking down the foods. If we eat breads and low fiber foods the stomach doesn’t have a need for as much acid so the acid levels go down. I’ve noticed eating raw vegetables helps me feel better quickly. Instead of antacids I either drink tea with a little ginger or just put a very small pinch of it in my mouth. It acts immediately and the reflux is gone. I’m not saying this will cure LPR but it helps me greatly. I haven’t been diagnosed with LPR but after watching this video I will be more careful to not snack in the evening 😬

  • @norsmo3

    I was recently diagnosed with LPR and have been prescribed Omeprazole and Flonase (for a supposed sinus condition). I was prescribed steroidal meds by my Pulmonologist over four months ago to heal my lungs and bronchials from a major gas leak, which is tearing up my body. The drugs introduced a lot of acid and strange pain all over my body, so I stopped the heavy steroids. I tried the meds prescribed by my ENT reluctantly, thinking she was on to something. I have been a professional singer most of my life and I haven't had issues with my vocal chords, until lately. I have been dismayed that my vocal ability has been altered, something I have always called upon with ease. Watching your video, I know I have found answers to my concerns and will consult with my ENT. I will let you know how things go. You are a blessing, Madeleine!

    Best advice out there. I, eventually, after 3 weeks of struggling with this, combined everything I'd heard to find the right nutrition, including alkaline water and high alkaline foods, to start the healing process. 2 days in and everything is gone except a more mild lump in my throat and hoarseness. Like she says, it is a slow healing process that takes vigilance, so I will take comfort in this from someone like her, who went through, studied, observed, stayed disciplined, and came out the other side. Thank you. This is what going to the doctor should be like. Sadly, it's invasive procedures, top selling drugs and surgeries, all creating new problems while leaving the underlying cause, very simply explained here, unaddressed.

    I also have this, my symptoms begun with coarse and tired voice and I was diagnosed with nodules, I thought it was due to bad technique, but then I started with reflux during the night, even withouth having dinner, I would wake up at 4-5 am as if fire was coming out of my mouth, it got worse with an emtpy stomach. I was diagnosed with gastritis after an endoscopy, and I have to say anti-acids work for me. I tried apple-cider vinegar, lemon, raw potato juice, and lots of natural remedies that didn't work for me, but I found that eating ginger and liquorice tea relieve the symptoms. Changing diet helped a lot, and I'm back to normal now, with quite low medication, raised bed and healthy diet (basically I don't eat fatty, fried or very processed food, and red meat). I'm trying to quit medication now

    LPR is a tough one, especially if you have the double whammy of GERD ("noisy" reflux), too!
    I'm slowly moving through my healing, but it's worth working with a provider, and exploring things like medication, diet and lifestyle changes, natural prokinetics (gets the gut to empty faster), and addressing the root cause of your unhappy gut.
    Mine's complex: it's a mix of stress (which means no digestion), histamine intolerance (basically allergic to all the things), and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (from lower levels of stomach acid). These are common in folks with ADHD/neurodivergent, PTSD, and Hypermobility disorders; if you have those, definitely arm yourself with some research and present those to your primary care physician, because most aren't familiar with it.
    Working with someone to manage symptoms and finding the underlying cause is key!

    I'm not a singer but I feel this is what I have as well. Burning throat, hoarse voice, itchy sinuses/ears etc. I had an endoscopy a few months ago and everything looked fine.
    I started taking Manuka honey, chamomile tea, alkaline water, slippery elm, L-Glutamine etc and I did feel much better for a few months. I was eating normally and no change. Unfortunately in the last few weeks it's come back! Really frustrating. I really believe it's triggered by health anxiety as it coincided with my worries about having ALS (fortunately I don't!). I'm slim, no hiatal hernia, 6'2" and endoscopy was healthy. This is an issue with pepsin and the UES I feel, which irritates the larynx and pharynx. The UES gets inflamed and malfunctions so the pepsin seeps through. I'm going back to my chicken, porridge and potato diet to reduce acid and let the UES heal. LPR is so common it almost feels criminal that it isn't easily cured.
    FYI there is a clinical trial happening in Wisconsin under Dr. Nikki Johnston for a drug that can be inhaled through the nasal passages which would neutralise all pepsin in the airways. Lexiva I believe it's called. It's a repurposing of a HIV drug (which just so happens to kill pepsin as well!) into an aerosol. It can't come fast enough, but probably still a while away yet.

Twice a day morning, and before bed. During the day if needed. This was a long shot to me but worked. With in 10 minutes of spraying it's night and day. I hope this helps! Wow you hit the nail on the head! I had LPR and didn’t even know. All the symptoms you named I had. I saw a ENT. and he didn’t say it was LPR but he said the inflammation was so bad and I had silent reflux. H have to change my eating now:( no more chocolate, citrus, tomato based foods, garlic, blueberries, soft drinks. Like I mentioned I didn’t know I had LPR and didn’t know what was happening to my voice I was losing range so I started pushing harder in the worst way which caused me to develop a cyst on my vocal chord:( I tried just letting it go but my doctor advised me that it would be best to remove it because as it banged against my health vocal fold it would cause a callus which would be apt harder to fix then removing a cyst. I did the operation the 1st of the month March and now I have to take it easy, still sleeping propped up avoiding inflammatory foods at active the acid. LPR has definitely caused unwanted anxiety because I didn’t know what was happening and I always felt like I was choking and my airway was closing and the dry mouth and acid taste every morning was leaving me worried. Thank you so much for this ! I am sharing it with my doctors and musician friends. Also can you please direct me to one of your videos that helps to re strengthen my voice since I just had this vocal chord surgery and there is no qualified vocal coaches here in Kona Hawaii. Wow this may be one of the most confusing diseases even for the leading experts. The best treatment that leading experts in reflux can offer is surgery. Doctors will say they know what causes reflux "a weak LES" but none of them can answer the question of why it is weak or why it's inappropriately relaxing. I mean we have people telling us that low stomach acid is the root problem but to fill our bellies with alkaline water? This is one of the only diseases where the people who disagree about treatment literally say the oppisite thing is the treatment.
    And then theres us, the sufferers, desperately trying a new diet or supplement and going through the cycle of thinking we made progress only to revert back into symptoms for no aparent reason. I would literally give everything I own including the clothes currently on my back to find relief!

    GREAT job! It comes down to the health of the mitochondria of the cell. We need to ensure that it eliminates and assimilates correctly! Processed foods especially sugars deny our bodies of that ability. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

    I have been struggling with this my whole life and I was having a lot of trouble with my voice because from after 10 yrs ago I have experienced with my choking fit attacks from swallowing other foods but I have been going to most doctors for whenever I was sick and I had struggled from having strep throat with the two sides from rubbing against one another from the inside of my throat I had been diagnosed with tonsillitis I never in my life had to go through my own recovery from hell I was so upset and depressed that I had to take out my tonsils. I was just afraid of how I was losing my voice. And I now still keep having this fear of not having any confidence in myself that I can prove myself and other people that I can sing

    Legitimate information on this subject is woefully lacking, so videos like this are very important. I would like to emphasize the point that LPR can be primarily caused by not having ENOUGH stomach acid. When you eat something for which proper digestion requires more stomach acid than your specific body creates, that food will sit in your gut partially digested, then ferment, then create gas which will make you bloated and that pressure will force open the valve that is meant to keep food in your stomach. That allows the little acid you do make to find its way up to your esophagus where it does damage. The food that requires the most stomach acid to break down is meat- in my terrible battle with LPR, I finally realized that meat was the root cause. As soon as I stopped eating meat, my LPR vanished and hasn't ever returned. Just something for people to consider- good luck everyone.

    • @tsunamisun2369
      @tsunamisun2369 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What? If it was too little stomach acid then eating meat would increase acid production and help the problem by that theory. Plus meat would have to sit in the stomach for a very long time to ferment as it has no carbs or sugar. I could see if you were mixing fermentable carbs with meat being a problem but not meat itself.

      She did mention low acid levels in the stomach being to low at some point. I don’t think she intended to give a full medical analysis on LPR but to make us aware of it and point us to check the internet for a plethora of info and see a doctor if needed (is this a run on sentence or what? lol).
      Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. Good information.

      Yes I heard it from various sources and it seems to be true. I use Apple cider vinegar (ACV) diluted to water in order to raise the acid level of my stomach and it is improve greatly my LPR symptoms. There are various videos on youtube about ACV and LPR or GERD.

I'm a professional voice-actor and started experiencing LPR 4 months ago (my doc says it was most probably the combination of intermediate fasting and coffee); needless to say I completely freaked out. I've never heard of LPR but have struggled with these symptoms. I would never have even known it had a name, but acid reflux has been a problem and it has damaged my voice. I'm hoarse when I sing and I try to power through.. So, more damage. I hadn't heard of alkaline water but always put a tiny bit of baking soda in acidic things. Now I have a direction to go and I'll learn more about LPR.. Thank you this is so timely.

    I'm pretty sure I've got this, I've got all the symptoms. But the ENT doctor at the hospital told me she has no idea what is causing this. The only thing she could see was scarring on my throat from acid. The visit ended with that she increased the amount of PPI that I was already taking to double amount. I started the detox diet about 4 weeks ago, but on my own initiative after reading about it on the internet. So far I've had good days and bad days, it is indeed about playing detective trying to figure out what it was.

Or if you have a guard, you get that lump feeling in your throat and it's hard to swallow. And when you go down to bed over to get something off. The floor food just comes up. Because the sphincter is aren't closing properly.

    I had consulted ENTs and am going through speech therapy. I was diagnosed having a hiatus hernia, which makes food get stuck in my chest, swallowing is difficult and my right vocal cords were found to be weak (not closing effectively). My voice keeps breaking., I can't take high notes. I have a lot of mucous, post nasal drips, shortness of breath. I am on PPIs twice a day, take antacids, ACC600 for a month. I do breathing exercises and drink a lot of warm water to relieve my throat. I pray that healing will come through. Diet must play an important part too.

    Mornings are hell I fight myself before I face the day. It's also bad if I yell, laugh, or cry too hard. The pnd, anxiety, burping, throat clearing, growling, hacking cycle is literally the worst. Feeling like you are drowning and suffocating at the same time is awful. The more anxious I get the more runny my nose gets and skin starts burning and itching because my body thinks I'm in an allergic shock. The only thing that has helped stop attacks is smoking weed flower. But even that is not easy. You have to able to breathe to smoke weed. And when you are hyperventilating that's very hard. I'm no gluten, no egg, no dairy, no beans, little too no preservatives, no coffee after 20 yr drinker, haven't smoked cigarettes in 6 years, it's tough. I've had this issue for almost as long as I can remember. Even as a little kid. I do have a hiatal hernia. I wish I knew how to make it stop. I also have spinal stenosis. I have a feeling vagus nerve has a ton to do with it

Finally got diagnosed when I leaned over while awake and got fluid gush into my mouth. My throat was sore for years but was dismissed. This was before I was a singer and it was a post pregnancy change in my body not to do with late night snacking. So I got an electric bed (totally recommend!) and take acid suppressants. Got medication for reflux, nasal drip, physio, singing course… I’m now 53 and have kind of given up on my voice. Nothing seems to help. Never heard of LPR. Strange. Will see….
