  • Jason Stopa at MORGAN LEHMAN Terry Winters at MATTHEW MARKS GALLERY
James Kalm begins this color quest by serendipitously capturing a tangy rendition of the Miles Davis classic “All Blue” on Union Square. After an intro like this it’s fitting that viewers are invited to visit “Joy Labyrinth” Jason Stopa’s latest exhibition at Morgan Lehman. “All shades, all hues, we’re all blue…” is an appropriate verse to contemplate as we ogle these pieces. Over the last decade Stopa has emerged as a force in the New York painting scene with his seemingly effortless compositions. Referencing a vocabulary of pleasurable shapes and color, from the Rocco, Matisse, flags, heraldry, and cartoons, these works are seriously unserious.
Stopping for a tap-dancing interlude with Brian Davis, we paint-heads then trek on to catch one of this season’s most anticipated shows, Terry Winter’s “Table of Contents” at Matthew Marks. James Kalm has been keeping viewers abreast of Winter’s developments for many years now, and he is consistently one of the most popular painters your correspondent covers. This show is a luscious venture into one branch of contemporary New York painting that remains relevant. Dealing with compositions that are roughly geometric, the artist overlays skewed and warped dot grids, and networks of pattern and line. Winter maintains a sensuous facture, and a color sense that on close observation, is as complex as it is sublet. This program was recorded June 5, 2021 #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk #kalmsees

Thanks. Terry Winters work is truly outstanding. Would love to see these in the flesh. Fantastic surfaces. The first show of his I saw was at Tate in 86/87? He knows his onions for sure.
    Happy Days

I like Terry Winters' B&W works on paper best... Sometimes an artist relaxes more when making smaller works, like on paper, and good thing happen.

I will say that I don't feel any struggle or depth in Jason's work, I get the sense he may have experienced little in making them. But the colors are nice as the forms. In any case, those are my thoughts, I tip my hat to Jason for the show.

Feelings of "struggle or depth" may not be the emotions or meanings Jason is looking for. What may seem superficial, or light can be just as difficult to achieve as the apparent (some times faked-up) of the existential "struggle". I know Jason spends a lot of time on the designing and color balancing of these works. On the other hand, there's also the attitude of "keeping everything fresh"...(which can also be faked...).

It's beginning to look alot like
    New York City!
Okay, now for my worthless 2 cents worth.
Jason: I find Jason's work as likeable and decorative as James pointed out, but being painted thinly and directly and loosely, playfully, there seems to be a shallowness, less enduring. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but can hamper influence and following. I find the smaller pieces to be more interesting.
Terry Winters is now an old timer well established and can do no wrong.
This work, though very different in look, is a continuation from previous subject matter.
I have it from an expert that Terry was a microbiologist on another planet in a previous life.

I really like the new paintings from Terry Winters, he seems to have moved away somewhat from the biological forms of previous works. They also remind me of Brice Mardens latest work with the swirling lines. Good use of colour. Maybe an over emphasis on the dots!

Interesting concept of different cuisines (@19:10) b/t oil and acrylic, James. Terry Winters has been on my short list of top 5 painters for most of my adult life. But I often wonder if that Whitney retrospective didn't rush his career to its zenith, and that he never quite recovered from that... Thank you James, thank you Kate!

Thanks for this. Always curious about Terry Winters work. More the look than the process or the words. Going to watch the Maryam Mirzakhani bio as there feels like a connection. Both have a fascination for surfaces. Love the hand made. Thanks again.
