  • I needed an excuse to try out my secondhand tile saw I get last week so decided to head off to Birdlings Flat to find some smaller size agates and bits of chalcedony.
The sun wasn't out and the tides weren't ideal but managed to find a few agates in the time I was there and cut them that evening.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions on my previous videos!

The pretty red one looked like Amygdaloidal rhyolite with chalcedony or maybe feldspar. Love the smoky banded agate and banded chert!

I see more gizzard stones mate 👍🏻👍🏻when the stones became too polished the moa regurgitated them because they were no longer able to grind food.(basically they were the moa’s teeth)they roamed the east coast for millions of years.they were able to recognise that agates were the hardest ,therefore last longest,so used them where they could.some get quite large.the heaviest in my collection of several hundred would weigh nearly a pound.the size of these birds is hard to imagine !so you weren’t the first big two legged thing to find some of your stones 😁👍🏻.to the trained eye there is an absolute difference between river and ocean polished and big bird polished!happy hunting mate

Thanks Mick! I've found some moa bone and you're right, they were big birds! I think I've found a few gizzard stones up in the hills of Canterbury. 😄

If you run Super glue around fracture lines and lightly sprinkle silica dust (talc) over the glue, let it dry for 12 hrs it can be cut without fracturing!
Larger pieces will need to be done one each side. Let gravity do most of the work

Nice little agate and jasper! On that greenish one that you didn't finish cutting...possibility that it could be a type of jade? I know there's beaches here in America where people go jade hunting. Just guessing due to the nice soft greens involved.

There is some amazing Jade found on the West coast, about 3 hours from where I stay. I've only found really small pieces and nothing of gem quality 😊

They look great after being cut. Might look into one of those saws. My kids love going to Birdlings Flat.
Have you been up to Mt Somers yet??

I have a saw that I must set up properly and perhaps get a polisher 😄 I haven't been up to Mt Somers yet, I've been focussing on the fossils the past holiday. Planning another pet wood trip though!
