I've thought about this too previously. But what's the alternative to grades? Especially in public school settings where everyone is at a slightly different mental level, grades are the easiest way to get a large sum of people to study and force themselves to learn as grades serve as an external motivator. If grades simply didn't exist I think students would specialize in the subjects they are interested in the most and pretty much neglect all other subjects or just not try to learn at all as they see school as a waste of time. If you want a large number of people of you country to be "educated" you kind of have to force them to do certain things otherwise they'll just avoid it. Do you agree with that? I'm also just a student but finding an alternative to grades is just so difficult.
