hi, during the 10x + 49 = 3x - 30, i was just wondering why you can’t just combine like terms ? because in some situations you need to combine and in others you need to subtract. why is that? is combining like terms only for linear inequalities?

That is to get rid of the fraction on the right side of the equation, which is 3/5 (the coefficient of X). To clear the denominator, which is 5, we need to multiply the right side of the equation by 5. However, we also need to multiply the left side of the equation by 5 to keep the equation balanced. In example D, we had the expression 12((5+8𝑦)/6). We were able to cancel out the 6 with 12 because 6 is a common denominator for both 5 and 8y. So, we simplified 12/6 to 2, making the expression simpler before we distributed.
In the last example, we had the expression 10(1/2 𝑥 + 3). Here, 2 isn't a common denominator, so we couldn't simplify it with 10. Instead, we just distributed 10 directly.
