Wow! Rachmaninoff plays this piece from the inside out -- it's as if he fully understands each gesture that Schubert is making, so that what he plays is not notes, but meaning. And beautiful meaning. I would call this a fully imagined performance. Thanks for posting it!
You know i was shure is a violin musician..😊cause the first time i heared his name was with david garrett piece❤only 5 months ago..but music is timeless..❤❤❤
Yes, there are a few technical snafus in this regarding the mechanical reproduction. But MAN - when it hits...it is AWESOME. Hats off to Mr. Stahnke. A brilliant window into the past. Beautiful.
Rachmaninoff plays this impromptu magnificently! Rubinstein's performance is slow and plodding by comparison, although he is still one of my favorite pianists.
A bit too fast in my humble opinion, but still wonderful, so thanks for sharing. Interesting how little pedal he uses. I'm used to a lot of pedal in romantic piano compositions. My favourite interpretation of this piece is still Mitsuko Uchida's.
Very fine. However I do wonder how accurate the recording of his use of pedal was. Some of the chords at the beginning sound just a little wrong, how did the piano roll get the pedal, was it just on/off or did it record the subtle gradations that I am sure Rachmaninov would have used. Is this where the "realized by Wayne Stahnke" comes into it?
@lsbrother You people would like every piece to be rubatoed like hell. This some of the finest playing of the piano to be ever done, I for one miss those pianist that were romantic pianists not sentimental pianists. Just listen to the dynamics, they are far from mechanical. Although it is not a perfect reproduction it is a lot better than what is done today and surely morre reprensetative than the old recordings of the king of piano as he was labeled by about every pianist and critique
I played this Schubert in public, 15 years old, most of the time me and the adience of nearly 200 persons in complete darkness. Some dude had the idea to take fotos of this event. Don´t know till today who creeped around me in the dark, the guy must have forseen I´d not stop playing because of the ligth was switched off and his annoying flashligths and creaking steps on the stage. I quitted studing music because of assholes everywhere.

that last part of the phrase at 0:28 seconds where he makes it legato. It works so well and is sooo sweet.

+Tom Devine I don't think that the piece makes sense at this speed. And he changes tempo quite frequently.
He doesn't understand what "allegretto" means, especially how the term was used in the early 19th C.
amazing to hear Rachmaninov playing Schubert. I love his direct nonsentimental way. Great pianist!
MOVING CLASSICS the non sentimentalism actually adds to it. It makes it sound as if it’s effortless.
These are such treasures. Thanks for posting them.
I amend my previous post. I've been doing some research, and this is absolutely the way it was written. Hats off, Mssr, Stahnke! A genius!
Wonderful performance ! So beautiful ! 🙊🙊✌🏻️👍🏻
He uses speed in a way... wow. Not technical but... he uses speed, he uses it to achive something.
V little sustaining pedal so that the speed makes sense?
Stunning... as usual... I've owned this record since it was issued: great achievement! Thx for upload. Shared on Google+
a very classical interpretation.

i'm just imagining those huge fingers being so fluttery haha...
Wow bravo very bold

Listening to this piece takes me somewhere... different than Maestos Vladimir or Arthur interpretations. Not being better but just extremly powerful.
Divine,from my beloved artist💙💙💙
Great!

Schubert becomes Rachmaninov. Stunning technique though
The best
Beautiful playing of a romantic era piece with almost no pedal. It goes flawless!
superb!
RIP, my ever most favorite man of music, no, really GOD OF MUSIC.

Wow these recordings certainly show a Russian technique and musicality. It is wonderful

seems a tad mechanical and fast. But v accurate I guess.

omg
He played this?
Yes, he recorded this on a audio recording wery similar to this roll.
how reliable is this?
P7
to me looks like rachmaninoff wanted to show of
Too fast...
maybe its not really him who knows
it is ive had the original record for 40 yrs.its definately him
Terrible. Way too fast and just no music! Disappointing.
A very bad Chopin, Schubert should have had studied composition!
A very dumb comment, you should have studied music!

The1976spirit Well, good for you, but that has zero impact on your moronic initial comment.
maestro, why do you not compose something better
