Thank you Nathan. That’s really nice of you to say, and I appreciate your time to comment. I hope you have a good journey creating content. In some ways this channel has been like a learning playground. I’m am looking to now start another channel and getting right from the start all the things I’ve learned. best wishes, Mark
I happened upon your video because I read your comment on another video about literature review writing. I have 6 weeks to have a 10 page undergrad research project (with poster!) done, and 2 weeks to submit my draft (abstract with outline.) What's intense for me is that I've never done any of this (research, nevertheless a paper) before. And I'm new to the topic as well. Worse yet, it's an honors program. So I feel (despite my 3.8) like a massive imposter right now. Point of this comment: 1) Your video was 10x more helpful than the past 10 hours of videos I've watched on how to do this. So THANK YOU! 2) I forgot all about the Steal Like an Artist book and now I'm going to make sure to read that. 1 Criticism: Your video Title, Description doesn't bring this up in top results when searching "How to do a literature review." (fast) I would suggest adding that exact sentence to the end or working it into your SEO. Only because students need to watch this. I have bookmarked it to share it with my friends tomorrow. 2 Inquiries: Will you consider making MORE videos on this topic? I think it fills a massive niche. Can you suggest any other videos already done on this topic (or books, resources, etc.) because my teachers are really busy and also just assume this should all be easy and make sense.
Hi Salome. Apologies for not responding until now, it is my busiest time of the year teaching in this Autumn Term, and I have been recovering from having my children with me at half Term holiday! Thank you for taking the time to write such a considered and thoughtful comment. I really appreciate your words and the sentiments. your schedule seems intense, I really feel for you, it is a story similar to other students all over the world, who are having such increased demands and expectations placed upon them. I hope you are doing well with all you have to do. IF there is anything you think I can do for you, or you need to speak to someone, email me at my university address or on professormarkegan@gmail.com To pick up on a few of your points 'Your video Title, Description doesn't bring this up in top results when searching "How to do a literature review." - Yes I have tried a few different titles, sadly in a crowded field, no matter how good my video is, or if I am the only video that is actually offering a particular insight, the algorithm will place more established channels above mine, and perhaps they have better retention rate, and click through rate on he thumbnail. a video might not be completely relevant to the search, but if youtube thinks you will click and watch it, then it will be put ahead of mine - and I am way down the list. More videos - Yrs after doing some videos on reading, I am now focusing on what do students really want and need. I am releasing a video tomorrow which looks at essay writing. I really want you to watch this, I think you will enjoy it and it will be illuminating for you. Also if you think it is a good metaphor I might also apply the chain image to the processes of the dissertation, and do a video on this. Additionally, I am just writing a script for a video on literature reviews which uses the metaphor of journeying along a story and visiting a party full of professors (not sure how fun this would actually be in reality!) Regarding reading, it depends on your discipline, for anything research methods based, I’d always recommend starting with an old colleague, Professor Alan Bryman, sadly no longer with us, who is the most recognisable and well published scholar in the field of research methods Good luck in your study journey, and I am always here for you if you need me - Best wishes, Mark
@@professormarkegan Thanks for such a lengthy response and for sharing your contact. I will Google search for Professor Alan Bryman! I think your video ideas are awesome and I'll surely check out the one on essay writing. As far as the algorithm, I completely understand what you're saying. Its really sad that larger channels get closer to the search results and front page, and thus reinforcing even more clicks and more popularity- while really GOOD videos are getting shuffled down. This one might just save my GPA. That's seriously significant (to me at least.)

Blown away with the quality of this video, for the first time I’m actually confident and excited about my dis instead of anxious. Honestly you should have WAY more views, best video by miles on this topic
Thanks Euan, I appreciate your kind words. I still consider myself new to this, and therefore nice comments keep you going. It’s slowly getting views, the watch time is good but it’s up to TH-cam to push it. Check out my most recent video, released on Monday, it will help you with your academic writing. Good luck with your study journey, I’m always here for you Mark
Hi, Dr. Mark Egan. I came to this channel due to your comment in the IfD Qualitative Research Specialists. It's a lovely and unique video made by a Professor. Please do make more creative videos. Syahdan, Indonesia.
That’s a lovely comment, thank you. I’m in the process of making 3 new videos on creating good habits for learning and study. I’m going to keep them creative, it takes more time but I enjoy it more and think viewers do as well. Best wishes to you on your journey- Mark
Professor Egan you nailed this production. Well done. First video of yours that I have seen. The first of many, I can assure you. Really impressed. Well done.
Thank you Douglas! It is really great to hear this, I value your words. If you are embarking on a dissertation I wish you all the best, and hope you get a great result - Prof Egan
I'm really glad I stumbled upon this video. I'm currently at this aspect of my dissertation, and this video conducted by Professor Egan has relieved me of so much burden and has made my life much easier. Especially what is required of me in doing this literature review? I just want to thank you so much for making this video and sharing it with us; it is much appreciated.🙏
Thank you Pilay, I really appreciate your comment. It’s nice to hear of a positive impact, particularly how you say it has relieved you of a burden. That was part of the intention of the video, to point out that dissertations often make us feel we have to do everything anew, which creates pressures, when really we are just refashioning literature reviews and research ideas that are already out there. Good luck in your dissertation journey, I hope it goes really well for you, take care - Professor Egan
This would be fantastic, except when the topic is severely under-researched, and citations need to be peer reviewed and within the last 10 years. Next to nothing out there.
Arh thank you 💗that means a lot, only just starting out so unsure of it. All I can do is enjoy producing the best quality content for students to learn from and hopefully make it watchable - Dr Egan
Saw your response on a Think Media vid and would say your vids are great. I’m actually impressed as a starter content creator. 🙏
