I learned through my recent knitting hobby that tons of people are crazy for buttons. In the garment district in NYC, there are several stores that are entirely buttons. They're like small warehouses of just buttons, and they're busy with patrons. I went on the yarn crawl in LA in 2018, and most stores had a rack, or a whole wall of buttons, and there were always people digging through them. The one store said a famous fashion designer (can't remember his name now) would come by every now and then, and sit on the floor in front of the button wall, and just go through buttons for an hour. I've heard many knitters say of buttons the same thing people say of shoes - they finish the look, or make the whole outfit. It's also an exciting thing for a lot of garment makers - finish the garment, then go on a treasure hunt to find just the right buttons for it.

Denny asked "Elijah isn't that hat just a little hot?" Elijah responded 'no... this mornin' it was a little hot... this afternoon it's a lot hot." And just went on about his business.

sometimes you find stuff that you just got to take home!
on one of my hoard diving adventures, I found something that kind of completed something I have at home I have a Telefunken lido gramophone from the 30s its a U-shaped beige leatherette portable and, in one of those houses I found a picnic set complete with everything but the blanket from the 40s-50s in a U-shaped beige leatherette case! same darn design!! I just had to mary those two!! also, portable gramophones were a staple at picnics before the transistor radio and the battery-operated 45rpm player replaced it and now it's a Bluetooth speaker and no homemade food just fast food!

Still so blown away at the similarities between the stuff there to the stuff here. Not a single item you've pointed out has been a surprise.. It's all here.. in MULTIPLES. Right down to the Yogi Bear Board Game and the Urine Sample jar. haha. Luckily you are dealing with a much smaller volume of it all and can get back to your life soon. As a child of a hoarder..my perspective is still so different. I have to stop imagining my mother experiencing PAIN when I take a carload to charity. You said "I took 15 loads yesterday..." while Josh is on the 4th or 5th load to charity. I am on a first name basis with the receiving department at 3 different GoodWill locations in my area. But I still feel the need to try to "rehome" everything. I am BLESSED to have met so so many resellers on TH-cam since I launched my channel and am enjoying sending them things in Bulk and making them happy. Joy.. that's my goal. I don't have an auction house to take it all to. I don't have an antique store to display and sell. I have what every family that inherits an estate has... inexperience and overwhelming emotions.
My mom was my best friend, as challenging as she was...as FRUSTRATING her hoarding was... I loved her. And she loved all these things... I wish I could CLONE myself. I need 12 of me. So the dozen "Jans" can work together to "see", "process" and "rehome" it all. I'd be done by now.. I'd have my life back by now. 5 year plan... 2 years left...
Your "brain" Alexander... your lifetime of experience with antiques....is THE most valuable part of this whole series. You know what to keep and what to save. I just keep shaking my head thinking about the hours and days and weeks I have spent trying to research ONE category. Only to find out it's a reproduction, or retains little value because it's damaged. I'm learning, every day... I don't know what I will do with all of this information in my brain after this MOUNTAIN of mine is done. I don't want to do this the rest of my life. I want to be on the other side of all of this. Sell the house, Sell MY house and move out to the country. GO back to my woodworking and my sewing machines.
I worked on the kitchen counter today while listening to you.. I made a SUPER STRAINER today out of old plastic crates I found in the yard. I have hundreds of boxes from her booths still to go through...and most of it needs to be washed to be sold.. Then listed on ebay or sold in a sale.
As always - THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and thoughts as you go through this stuff. I need to go strap my camera back on and keep working. My vacation from work is almost over. It's been an absolutely blessing to be off this week to mentally process this series with you. It's been an unexpected emotional journey but it's also been motivating and comforting.
Also a BIG thank you to some of your followers that have strolled on over to my channel this week. They have been helpful, positive, encouraging and have lifted me up to a level I haven't experienced up until now.
