Castle Caretech 2300 alarm panel update

  • This is not a system that I originally installed. All my cables are hidden. I take tremendous time and effort hiding cables, these ones were installed in about 1985 when the original keyswitch panel was installed (not by me - I was only 13 then!!).
    Here we have an alarm panel that I updated for my uncle many years ago (late 90s). For me, this is a trip back down memory lane (lol) to panels that I used to install in the mid 90s.
    Before this system was an old keyswitch panel installed in 1985 with motorised sirens (like the broadmoor ones, well, not quite as big!!), Ultrasonic motion detectors and a buzzer for the entry exit timer.
    I installed this Castle caretech panel in about 1996 - a Castle CareTech with some PIRs that are quite interesting! Optex and that horrible Racal Scorpio PIR on the landing! I fitted loads of these when I was a trainee, mainly in houses.
    Well, this system has come to the end of it's life, still working, but with some recent problems it's time to rip it out - new panel, new detectors, new external sounder.
    Nowadays I'm a technical engineer setting up complicated stuff with Access Control systems. I use Texecom panels for all alarms I install outside of work.
    (grrrr!! Had to reupload this - as yt processing seemed to take ages then I couldn't change quality up from 360p)

    Just found this videon 2023, I too used to fit the Castle Caretech panels. I still have my CareTech mug from when they released the Euro Meridian control panel, I also have he printer used with the 2300 panel, and the service program used for remote servicing!
    The good old days....
    Now they're part of Pyronics, and Bracknell has closed for good.
    Keep up the videos!

      +mrmattandmrchay I remember I tried to figure out how my grandmothers alarm system worked... Didn't end up great. I were able to set off the alarm and not turning it off xD

    Never, ever seen or heard of a Racal Scorpio before (Apollo etc... which I guess are much older I'm well aufait with!). You learn something new every day.

      Used to use the Racal IR1012 for offices, and I personally fitted hundreds of them Scorpios in domestics. They were very sensitive and lit up like a beacon! I think I explained in the video, some customers didn't like it and we put cable sleeving as a "light tube" so they lit up as a dot on the front lens instead! I have a video on the IR1012... th-cam.com/video/-GTun8LIbAo/w-d-xo.html. Love old PIR's, been looking on ebay for some really old ones!

      Seen your other PIR videos, they're great. Still have a stock of Alarmcom (Siemens-owned made in China era though) IR120s and a handful of 220s that I kept for service replacements but they never go wrong! Siemens / Vanderbilt re-badged Crow's (sold as e-Line) were amazing, but now discontinued in favour of 'Magic' detectors, which are mirrored (yay!) which I'm still evaluating... Shame that Crow won't sell into the UK but happy to flog their gear to every other territory on earth!
      As for old stuff I'll have to have a dig around and see what I can find for you! I've just picked up a BNIB 9500 on eBay for display purposes #tragic

    Very interesting video, the new equipment just looks so much more modern! Your detailed explanations are really good, heres to your next 3000 subscribers! It would be fascinating to see more videos on your own home automation system, I know you have done a couple, but, it is really interesting, Im sure it would of great general interest.

      jonzz100 Hi there. I have already recorded some videos on my home system, the problem is when ever I do something it has to be in depth and edited perfectly. I did this about a year ago, didn't have time to edit it and I think I've lost the plot! Might have to do it all over again :( It's on the list though.

  • @dykodesigns
    @dykodesigns 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's quite an andvanced alarm system. My alarm system is quite simplistic, you can only enter numbers from 1-4 for the 4 digit alarmcode. It's one of those cheap Elro systems from the D.I.Y. store. It does not have zones, you can only wire in one or two PIR's and a couple of battery powered door/window contacts.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The new one had loads of features, including a keyfob that sets, unsets, part sets and has a panic button built in - this is really good because it has bi-directional comms. The keyfob transmits and receives data, so the keyfob lets you know the status of the system. Also, "auto part set" - if you set the system and don't open the front door then the system assumes you went to bed and it's programmed to isolate the landing PIR. I finished there really late, so I didn't get a chance to do any filming of the new system unfortunately. Also, any problems or alarm activations were sent to mobile phones by SMS. Really wished could have showed you all this, but maybe next time i'm there I will :)

    Did you take it home so you could save it!?!? Are modern alarm systems better?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YES! I did save the old alarm panel. Not sure what I'm going to do with it, but that Racal Scorpio PIR on the landing is planned for a future video. Did you see all my old vintage PIR videos that I did last year? :) New systems ARE much better. New panels deal with spikes or thunderstorm activity better. Old panels were a nightmare when lightning was about, would lock up the panel - panel would go into alarm and freeze requiring an engineer to recycle the power to get it to work again, or destroy the panel PCB. Also, the power supplies are much better now. Actually come to think of it, there are loads of reasons why new panels are better :)

    By the look of the old box ghost outside it might of been a old vented bellbox

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I took it down before I fitted the Castle caretech panel. It indeed was a blue "H" polycarbonate vented box with a minimite siren inside (no SAB module) and no print on the front. Like this (without the sticker): burglaralarmbritain.wordpress.com/2015/12/06/strathand-glasgow-2012-2/

    when you service the bell box of a intruder alarm system do you have to put the system in engineer mode

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Hi Josh, yes you do, this will prevent the alarm panel going into tamper when you do open it. However, when the lid is removed from the external sounder, the external sounder (or SAS as it's known - Self Activating Sounder, or SAB for old school - Self Activated Bell) will still activate. It's easily silenced by finding the tamper switch and holding it in.
      If you didn't put the panel into engineer's mode then the panel would activate, which can be silenced by typing in your code.

    • @joshbrown3068
      @joshbrown3068 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh right and that would silence it cool yeah right

    Ever used one of these? th-cam.com/video/dnm839wQQRI/w-d-xo.html
    Been an alarm engineer since i left school somewhat 15 years. these are a favourite in garages and bike shops.
    Though mains fed can be ran from a backup inverter.

      @mrmattandmrchay  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Watson Yep, I've worked on loads of these. Even, before the master blaster was around there was a black mains powered siren from RS components - equally as loud.I've set one of these off during a maintenance check on a intruder alarm in a house in the countryside, just as a horse and rider went past - horse bolted! oops!
