A few things which keep coming up in the comments, which I want to answer in a blanket fashion, using the same K.I.S.S. attitude exhibited in the video: 1. Raising the roof of the shop and/or putting in a taller door: This is a whole lot of work for little benefit. I DO NOT DO ROUTINE MAINTENANCE in this shop. Twice or 3 times per year I pull a tractor in for major work. I either duck my head or push the tractor in as seen in this video. I will not be going through the extensive work of raising the roof to avoid ducking my head or pushing a tractor in. 2. Putting the freezers in the existing shop: I greatly value the 18' width of this bay, vs. the 12' width of the bays in the garage. That extra 6' makes a huge difference in versatility. 3. Putting the shop in the new addition: It doesn't work from a site traffic flow point of view. The freezer addition works great there. Also see #1; a higher ceiling is not a big issue. 4. Building a walk-in freezer: Bluntly, they suck. See my previous video on walk-in vs chest freezers. 5. An upstairs wood shop: I do not mind walking up stairs. If mobility issues arise as I age, I can move the woodworking equipment back downstairs.
Sorry to hear that Pete. Do not allow the squatters to have free rent in your head, to many of us enjoy the adventures you and Hilaire give us. Yes, I know the seldom seen star of the show. You and Hillary are a bright spot in our little spot of the World. MERRY CHRISTMAS from your Friend in Scipio, Milt.
Sorry to hear your frustrations Pete. Love your content, and you know so much in depth about your tractors. I would do the same if I had your layout and buildings, you're making the right choice!
As you told your well thought out plan, it resonated strongly with me as I've transitioned from repairing rowing shells in my long but skinny shop to many other projects. I think it takes your kind of thought processing, a much more complex way of finding a solution, rather than just simply building a new space that will cost a bucket of money, maintenance and real estate taxes. It takes longer to figure it out but it is more rewarding in the long run. Thanks for all your videos!
Great job Pete. I have unsubscirbed from many channels as the creators' have let their egos get the best of them, not that any one cares that I subscribe. I love watching the content creators like you present because you are everyday folks living regular lives just like us. Thank you for finding the best solution for your family and situation. Keep up the great work.
Thanks. Just personally, I do not like it either when YT channels lose their realism. Particularly, I have watched and left quite a few off-grid homesteading channels when they just became about buying and building new stuff.
Sounds like a good plan. Always great to think a long time about projects that require a lot of money. Are you still planning on expanding the pig and barn too? Have a great day Pete and Hillary. 😁
I want to do me a 30 by 40 x 10 because that'll get my 1586 inside or the f20 or the super C,or the H, or the Super M,or the 400, or the 89 Chevy pickup that needs a new timing gear set, for the 1946 International truck we are attempting to stuff a 454 into, words of bobcats so that we can do some work on it. Lake Forest Gump said "they was always somethin' to do"
I think that is an awesome idea . It's really awesome that your wife helps you. Don't need a million dollars shop .Just a comfortable one. Easy to heat. If you have a bigger shop more to collect junk
Smart. One of the things I appreciate about you Pete is your sensibility. While I know you may change your mind, your mindfulness prevails. That is what keeps me watching. It helps to know that others can live their lives being mindful and balanced. Thank you.
I don’t write comments and I am not sure you will read this because of some bad experiences 😢. Just want you to know I love your channel and hope you are just slowing down for the winter. I enjoy your videos because it brings back memories and I love watching how you manage and adapt. I grew up on a small dairy farm- my dad sold the cows when I was in third or fourth grade because he couldn’t keep up with the industrial farms which were just coming to be. I still remember how sad he was- even though he said nothing to us kids. He kept farming-a small homestead using today’s terminology….while he worked two jobs. Your videos bring back happy memories. I hold you will continue.
I don’t know why it’s so entertaining to watch you talk about shop space but it is. It’s just refreshing to watch someone with solid family values and enjoying the small things of life. Stay warm Pete from East Tennessee.
Peter, I sincerely hope and pray that you and your family are doing great. I absolutely love your videos and simple, wholesome messages about farm life, family and life in general. Whether it’s tearing apart and rebuilding one of your tractors or simple chores videos, I can’t express how informative and enriching they are to me. I look forward to seeing you again…..but that’s selfish of me. Take care Peter and take the time you need. Peter from Montréal.
Hey Pete! My 2 yr old son, Cyrus, is a HUGE fan of your videos! He asks me to watch “Five Acres for five minutes” all the time! 😂 He’s a farm boy through and through, and loves anything tractors. Thank you for making wholesome videos that I’m not afraid to walk away and let him watch - it so refreshing! If you ever felt inclined to give Cyrus a shout out, he would love that!
I miss you, Pete. I hope you are well. i pray nothing has happened to you and your family. I miss seeing your videos. Merry Christmas and happy new year from The Buggle Farm
@Justafewacres Merry Christmas Pete, Hilary and kids! May the Lord bless each of you now and in the coming year. Miss the videos, but sometimes the best thing to do is step away from others and concentrate on yourself and family.
Pete, I hope that bad actors watching your videos haven't upset you to the point that you will stop making videos. You do a great job and I have learned a lot from just watching you, no matter what the topic. I hope you have a Merry Christmas. God Bless you and all of your family.
Take comments with a grain of sand. It's a common illusion that people think they know what is in your head. They don't obviously. Just ignore that type of comment. I like watching you solve problems. You have a unique perspective.
Excellent solution all around!!! The upstairs space is absolutely beautiful, so much light! It will be a great space for all sorts of creative pursuits!! Maybe consider putting in some type of toilet (composting maybe) 👍🏻
Storing your cars outside will cause less rust than storing them inside. Corrosion requires an oxidizer (salt), moisture, and a warm environment. By storing your cars outside in the winter you are eliminating the heat needed to start the reaction.
If you ever wanted your cars covered, an inexpensive car port would do the trick. I added one at the back of my house so that I could get out of the car and into the house without getting rained on. I applaud your ingenuity in working with what you have and arriving at the best solution. More is just 'more', not necessarily better. You guys stay warm!
Hey Pete, wanted to just wish you and your family a merry Christmas and I hope everything is well. Have not seen a video for a while. Hope everyone is well and have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
I love seeing you apply the KISS (Keep it Simple, stupid) approach, and work through your desires, down to needs. I like seeing your analysis of the problems, and how to approach them. I think that's why I'm drawn to your channel. Not as much for HOW you get things done, but your attitude towards approaching the challenges encountered along the way.
Morning Pete . Well thought out process .Thanks for sharing your decision for all you want to accomplish . Really look forward to your videos . My day is already better , thanks to you and Hill . God Bless
Thanks for the videos. I can't wait for your next video. I check daily for a new one. Praying for you and your family. God bless you and all that you do.
Hi Pete, I was going to drop a comment of thanks, but wasn't able to. I hope everything is okay and that nothing bad has happened. Or that you're not so sick of comments that you've had the last straw. I'm amazed by the sorts of things people comment on freely, without concern and or consideration for you awesome You Tubers. You're providing us with entertainment, knowledge, information to mention but a few things. You need to build whatever shop, storage works for you and your farm/family, Pete. If you don't ask for suggestions maybe viewers could just keep their thoughts/suggestions to themselves, just my opinion, obviously. Just glad there's an option to let you know how much I enjoy the great content from across all aspects of the farm, thank you again. Seasons Greetings from a wet and windy Scotland. Regards Ian
Dear Pete. Me and my grandson Eric are waiting and waiting for your next video. Please tell us what is going on. Are you sick or what. We are so worried. Your vidloveeo is our highlight of the day. We cant wait. We love Hillary Paddy Esra and even your tractors. Please let us know what is the delay. We are in South Africa. Merry Christmas. From Granny Jo anne and grandson Eric. We love all your videos. 😢😢😊😊
Have been trying for days to find out what happened. Contacted Country View Acres too. Nothing. Love Petes videos and will be very sad if closes the channel. Michael, Norwalk Ct.
It is amazing how close our lives parallel . Small farm ,cattle, old IH tractors. Wise choice on the shop, I built the big shop almost same size you were talking about , it is too big. It wears me out to walk around in it now that I am older (73). I am exited to see the refurbish on the 856. I have work to do on a 656 ,806 and 560 . I am sure your tutorial will be invaluable to me. Thanks for all your work on the videos. Great job!!!
Pete, very excited about watching you configure the shop. I teach high school shop classes in a school built in 1902. Our wood shop is on the third floor of the building and have found it not to be a big deal to haul lumber upstairs. One day a year and lots of help!
When the conversation was about new pig barns and shops, I wondered if Pete was going a bit off-purpose. Now, I enjoy watching the mental gymnastics around creating the spaces that support the future you are creating. Thank you including us in the process. I'll go clean my shop now.
Hey Pete, wishing you and your family a very merry Christmas. I hope all is well, missed seeing a video every week. Hope you are getting family time and all is well. Love you brother.
Your new idea sounds like a winner. Rearranging your current buildings sounds like an excellent thing to do as an outsider with the view of your life you share with the viewers.
Please take the time you need to come to a place of peace with your channel. I would truly miss you, your humor, wisdom, and philosophical viewpoint. But, inner peace is more valuable than social discord on the internet. Be well, have a great holiday with your family.
Great ideas! It's going to be way more interesting to watch than some contractor building a huge new shop. It is really fun to see you work through problems, the way you don't let things bother you, just figure a way to get it done.
Hi Pete! I’m likely just like 90 other people watching, full of ideas to suggest for you but I learned one thing. Pete and Hillary are 2 very intelligent determined and motivated people, and I am just keeping my thoughts on your projects to myself and just hopefully watching as things all come together, that’s if you video the process. I look forward to every video you share. Thank you for sharing your life’s videos Pete. One of my most favourite channels.
This way of thinking, is why I love your channel! Use and improve what you have is my philosophy as well. I watch many farm and homestead channels. Many of those seem to think that new, new, new and build, build, build is the way to go! I don’t agree. I have a small 4 acre homestead and not a lot of money. I have used your advice and opinions more times than I can remember. I have Dexters and chickens here, so your advice is very valuable to me. I hope you continue to make your videos. Always something to look forward to!! Thank you!
Are you all happy now? I was brought up with if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it at all. That's some sage advice for some here. (They know who they are).
@@scottmiller9147 It's seems that Pete takes a hiatus from doing videos when certain people leave him unsettling messages. I just wish they'd knock it off and take a 'hint' from the Billy Joel song: Big Shot.
Id be willing to do Any work you need for 25 days straight. No charge of any kind. Just learning from you and Hilary would be the only payment. Knowledge is priceless and learning is priceless aswell
Excellent solution, but I tune in because of all your well thought projects. I especially enjoyed the Manure spreader because you literally brought back something I would have said too far gone😊
What an excellent series on the manure spreader...made me think about going right out there and buying one...wait, I got no farm and I got no manure. Such an excellent detailed rebuild, Pete! Marcel from Saskatchewan.
Good thinking. I like your realistic point of view. Thanks to your channel i regained my love for farming, especially for pigs. As a dentist i really don't need farming, but i love it so much. I have chickens and ducks again, and i am planning to get pigs. I grown up on small farm, and i go there every weekend, just to keep my mind fresh. Tnx for everything!
Farmers logic highlighting simplicity and practicality for the win! Makes perfect sense to me----but, at my age (80), the stairs to the woodshop might be a deal breaker, lol. Go for it, youngster!
Pete the truth is that you, Hilarie and family and JAFAF are much loved by many viewers. I know from your videos you are not the type of person who would disappear without saying goodbye. We can only assume something or some event happened. Please let us know how you are doing. Merry Christmas. Michael Torre, Norwalk Ct.
Hey Pete. Glad to see comments back on. Was concerned that you may have received an offensive comment. Re-watched your video “Is TH-cam worth….” You mentioned Evan and Wes’s channels. Starting watching them now. Great guys. All three share a positive attitude, no nonsense, no sarcasm and no cutting to irrelevant digressions. Looking forward to your next video. Michael, Norwalk Ct.
Adding an addition to the other side of the garage is a great idea. Hire yourself a good architect 😂 and with a good set of plans it will balance the building very nicely and suit your needs!! Btw, I would love to see you tinkering on an old sessions clock in one of your videos.
Wood shop, great idea! I've got a second story one also. One thing I changed from my outside 4' × 4' door. I replaced it with a 9'×7' insulated garage door because it made putting material, especially plywood very easy with a set of forks on the loader. You have a long and enjoyable retirement and keep those videos coming.
In a world where few people know the difference between a spur of the moment want and a real need your channel is a breath of fresh air. I enjoy seeing the thought process you and Hillary put into these major decisions. Give yourself some time to let the new plan sink in and look for any possible issues and then just go for it. Looking forward to seeing it play out!
You're a clear, creative and pragmatic thinker, Pete! There is no substitute for time, examination and keeping the billfold shut until a bulletproof plan makes itself known! It'll be fun to see how you pull this off! Thanks for sharing the thought processes!
I have exactly 0 surprise with what happened. Just like when pete was talking about what to do with the pigs and he got into the more complicated solutions and slowly eliminated them. I expected he would come down to ground here and do something much less radical. I am glad to see that he’s turning the Second floor refuse room into something usable the first time you went up there and I saw that and went oh gosh what a great space. Now it will be used as productive space again.
Thanks for all the great videos, Pete. I am 60 years old, the older I get, I do not care for material possessions as I use to. Making memories with my family and good friend's.
Your Right!!!😊. You just saved so much money by rationalizing it all. Lol. Sounds like a good plan. 👍 make Due of what you have. Blessings 🙌 always. ❤🎉😊
Great plan Pete, impulsive people waist time and money. I know because I've been impulsive my whole life and have many regrets. Your thoughtful ways are good for your younger viewers. I'm ten years your senior and I hear my grandparents clearer now than I did when they were living. "haist makes waist" remember that one?
Hahaha, I have been watching since about 1.5k followers. I thought to myself. I bet he expands the shop and puts freezers off to the side. I appreciate your thought process and walking us through it. Keep up all the good work!
Well Pete you've done it again, ! come up with a solution that just makes perfect sense. That's what I oft times refer to as "Good old Yankee ingenuity!" think "Value", thrift, logic, workability, I just love it. I think you've made a smart decision. As an Amateur Radio operator (we're known to be "cheap", and an old New Englander (80), it just makes perfect sense to me. well done! Both you and Hilary have put your thinking caps on and done yourselves proud Thanks for sharing and can't wait to see the work on the 856 love watching those . ECF
It's funny you mention simplifying. I'm about your age and have lived in my house for 20 years. For the past 2 weeks I have had a large dumpster on my driveway, not for a renovation, but to simplify and get rid of stuff I don't need and haven't touched in years. Once I'm done I'll have a whole load of open space where I'm not tripping over things. The path you've gone sounds exactly like the path I reasoned out for myself too. Best wishes from Connecticut.
Your plans for the future are well thought out... so much so that you remind me of how my own father would approach his projects,,, which I am happy to say I also followed in my journey through life which has led me now to a comfortable life of retirement so I can enjoy my grandchildren and great grandchildren... although I do avoid stairs when at all possible... I am a disabled American veteran so stairs can be more of a challenge than I want to overcome... watching your videos... every last one of them is always a joy for me...
I would love to see woodworking videos added to your line up...First video of yours I watched was you repairing one of the poles on the polebarn. I love listening to you think out logical solutions...bigger is not always better. I am restoring my parents old farm and I am trying to renew existing structures already on site. Looking forward to seeing the new plans put into action.
Good idea - you do have plenty of options. I'm wondering if just swapping the freezers into the shop area and making the 2 bay freezer area as a new shop (and build up the access doors - if ever there was an emergency, I think quick access out could be a life saver...not to mention the time savings with all that have to do to bring things in :-). Totally agree - I have a 3 car garage - car stays outside. :-). Little bit of snow won't hurt them. When they're in the garage you have to do a lot to clear a path to get them out. If they're already out by the drive - there is only a little bit to take care of between the car and driveway. Good luck with all your plans!
A few things which keep coming up in the comments, which I want to answer in a blanket fashion, using the same K.I.S.S. attitude exhibited in the video:

Please take the time you need to come to a place of peace with your channel. I would truly miss you, your humor, wisdom, and philosophical viewpoint. But, inner peace is more valuable than social discord on the internet. Be well, have a great holiday with your family.
I’ve been waiting all morning for your video. Good Sunday morning.
Hello everyone, wish you a happy and happy working day
Great ideas! It's going to be way more interesting to watch than some contractor building a huge new shop. It is really fun to see you work through problems, the way you don't let things bother you, just figure a way to get it done.
Thank you Todd.
Thank you!
Like the garden keeping 👍. Stay warmer there😉
Hey Pete I got your book Sunday for my birthday from my wife. I’m on chapter 6. Awesome book!
My Birthday was Sunday as well !!!
Are you all happy now? I was brought up with if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it at all. That's some sage advice for some here. (They know who they are).
What happened?
@@scottmiller9147 It's seems that Pete takes a hiatus from doing videos when certain people leave him unsettling messages. I just wish they'd knock it off and take a 'hint' from the Billy Joel song: Big Shot.
@@claramurzynski6739 hopefully he’s back soon……I love his videos and outlook with farming and life in general…..
Pete I hope you and your family have a blessed Christmas time
Like the early Sunday morning videos. Chillin out drinkin coffee checking out what’s happening on the ol farm.
I appreciate your train of thought I think a lot of people would just throw money at it I’ve been doing a lot of 18:10 cleaning out my self
Developing the "right" plan takes as much work as building it. You're already halfway there, Pete!
Adding an addition to the other side of the garage is a great idea. Hire yourself a good architect 😂 and with a good set of plans it will balance the building very nicely and suit your needs!! Btw, I would love to see you tinkering on an old sessions clock in one of your videos.
Great info Pete wonderfull decisions saving $$$ is always a good thing!. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this ❤
Wood shop, great idea! I've got a second story one also. One thing I changed from my outside 4' × 4' door. I replaced it with a 9'×7' insulated garage door because it made putting material, especially plywood very easy with a set of forks on the loader. You have a long and enjoyable retirement and keep those videos coming.
Whew. Function over form only goes so far with me, and the appearance of that would definitely cross the line.
Good chat today Pete. Have a great day!
Pete we need more videos. I like seeing what you do every day. I like the farm life.
You're a clear, creative and pragmatic thinker, Pete! There is no substitute for time, examination and keeping the billfold shut until a bulletproof plan makes itself known! It'll be fun to see how you pull this off! Thanks for sharing the thought processes!
Merry Xmas to yourself, Hilary and family. Cheers Frank
It's your place, do what works for you .
Sounds like a plan Pete. Some people just can't stand it when others are satisfied with simplicity. I applaud ur decision. Good luck.
Merry Christmas Pete and Hilarie Larson & Family!
Thank you all so much for the wonderful videos that you share with us! First Rate!
Chuck in Florida.
Pete are you doing ok.
Thanks for all the great videos, Pete. I am 60 years old, the older I get, I do not care for material possessions as I use to. Making memories with my family and good friend's.
Sounds like a great plan.
Merry Christmas from Kentucky
ECF
Merry Christmas Pete and family
It's funny you mention simplifying. I'm about your age and have lived in my house for 20 years. For the past 2 weeks I have had a large dumpster on my driveway, not for a renovation, but to simplify and get rid of stuff I don't need and haven't touched in years. Once I'm done I'll have a whole load of open space where I'm not tripping over things. The path you've gone sounds exactly like the path I reasoned out for myself too. Best wishes from Connecticut.
Hi Vince, we're in the same boat. If we haven't touched it in a year, then it's gone. I don't want any clutter around here anymore.
Hey Pete I hope all is well I haven't seen the video in a while.
Just a thought.
Don't borrow money to expand based on future youtube income.
Better to stay small and do what makes you happy.
That is the way we've always lived, and it's proven to be successful for us.
Merry Christmas, Mr. Pete and family. Hope you all had a blessed day and are doing well.
Hay you guys are the REAL army, staying safe is the pride ,
I would love to see woodworking videos added to your line up...First video of yours I watched was you repairing one of the poles on the polebarn.
Thank you. The shop is in an 18' wide bay, vs 12' wide bays in the garage. That extra width is why I want it to stay as a shop, not a freezer room.
