    That particular video was made at the end of the part of the tour for The HOlographic Principle in Europe last year. They did like one concert every two days, or everyday for a few months, starting around October, I think, and I saw them just two days before this concert (in February). You couldn't tell that they'd toured so extensively, like, at all. They were amazing, really high energy and I loved every second of it. I think it was the most fun I've ever had at a concert (plus Epica and PowerWolf? That's a real treat, hehe).
    All the members of the band were really involved with the crowd too, and they had fun while doing their stuff, which is the best thing you can ask for. As always, they ended with this particular song, and, even in a small venue like we had, the mosh pit was insane. It was really fun to watch too, lol!

    And this is exactly why you go see an Epica show for 30+ times and still not get tired of it. The atmosphere on and off stage just never dies. And the latest album is really really good, maybe the best one of the latest couple of years. Hope you liked it :)

    Awesome man, this song is fantastic, and this performance is even better, they're amazing live !
    I love all of their albums, but their album of 2014 The Quantum Enigma for me it's not just their best album, but the best album of the whole symphonic metal genre. Try to check out the song The Essence of Silence (official live video), it's awesome

      Haha this might be one of their least impressive albums for me (though STILL awesome, don't get me wrong!), but definitely to each their own 😊 has some ah-mazing songs though.

  • @levischorpioen

    Kingdom of Heaven or even The Quantum Enigma is a much better representation of what Epica sounds like today. Consign to Oblivion, while an incredible track, is still very much old-school and Epica didn't really shift into their current sound until their next album, The Divine Conspiracy. However, the live video is a perfect representation of just how much fun they are on stage, so hey, that's a win for ya right there!

    • @patrickshelley09

      I'd disagree with this. While the album CTO is not representative of Epica as a whole. The song CTO is very representative of them. Mark has even stated that he thinks it's their most complete song in terms of having everything the band is about rolled into one song. It's why they close with this song at nearly every concert and why the live version is usually the number one requested reaction video from Epica fans. This song could easily go on TDC, DYU, Requiem or THP. TQE is a little too clean and flat for this song though. Don't get me wrong, I think songs like DYU and KoH are better than this song but your statement is not accurate in my opinion and I'd wager the band would not agree with it either.

    I would recommend the "We will take you with us" album. It is quiet old album but it is just so unbelievable good. All the tracks are great but the standout tracks are "cry for the moon" "The phantom agony" and the gorgeous ballad "Feint" It is a studio recording but more or less with accoustic setting. For this performance they were supported by a string section (violins and chello's) plus choir. The whole performance can be found on youtube.

    Epica is amazing, but there are more great Dutch metalbands. You should definitly check out "Dear Mother" With their debut album "Bulletproof". They are a new dutch metalband formed by ex-Delain guitarist Merel Bechtold and ex-Delain drummer Joey de Boer. They teamed up with David "Pear" Hruska as their vocalist. Its realy worthwhile!
    I recently found them and bought the album right away, they're incredible!

    I almost got to see them this year, but the tour changed up before they reached my town. Seeing this video, I really wish that had not been the case. I'd be interested to contrast their show with Kamelot and Delain, since I have seen them live. Looks like the show was pretty incredible. In the states, though, I suppose they'd be playing in a smaller venue, so the pyro and so on would probably be impossible.

    I would suggest reacting to the official music videos for "Edge of the Blade", "Beyond the Matrix", and "Universal Death Squad" if you want some more up-to-date Epica. Those songs are all from their most recent studio album, The Holographic Principle, from 2016.

  • @xenophon343

    I saw them live last year here in the US where they rarely play, in a small venue and it was an awesome (note I didn't say epic :) performance. Total professionals.

  • @ronaldboers8061
    @ronaldboers8061 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you want to listen to something more recent then "once upon a nightmare"(a song from their last album The Holographic principle) should be intresting. The song is based on a poem written by Wolfgang Goethe (the german version of Shakespeare). it is basically a horrific fairytale about a father racing through the night trying to find help for his sick son (who in his high fever has visions of gobling king trying to seduce him to enter the land of the dead). The build-up of the song and its tragic conclusion is just piece of art in my oppion. th-cam.com/video/CPgZmfD5E8Q/w-d-xo.html

      This is definitely a song I didn't think I was gonna like (because in reviews I read "atmospheric" and "ballad-like" etc and Epica ballads have usually been the least interesting parts of their albums for me), but absolutely surprised me and blew me away. When you get goosebumps and tears in your eyes at first playthrough, you know it will be a song that will stick with you forever. :) So strong. Also live.

    I'm sorry for commenting on another older video of yours, hopefully you'll see this, however while watching for the umpteenth time I noticed that you compared them to Nightwish. I figured you'd be interested in a band whom I would personally compare them towards, To the best of my knowledge, the band was named after Kamelot, specifically one of their albums, Epica, the latest album that they had released. Personally, Kamelot is one of my favorite bands, even after their change in singers from Roy Khan to Tommy Karevik. I'm adding a couple other links, also labelled for your convenience of some more of their songs and some history to name change of Epica for your perusal if you're interested. In terms of musical comparisons, I would compare them more to Kamelot with a lead female rather than Nightwish. Their musical styles in that they lean more towards metal with symphonic backing is. in my opinion, a better comparison than Nightwish who leans more towards a folksy influence, though, I am just a metal fan, so I'll trust your opinion as a former professional music reviewer more than my own on this particular topic. I just want to share the love for music more than anything. With regards to Kamelot and Epica, feel free to lean on me for any questions, they are two bands whom I follow very closely, hopefully I can answer any questions you may have.
    Kamelot: "The Haunting" (The song that, to the best of my knowledge, essentially kick-started Simone Simons' musical career due to the difference in popular knowledge of the bands at that time) :: th-cam.com/video/otFZzdNuJwQ/w-d-xo.html
    Kamelot: "The Haunting Live: One Cold Winters Night (I highly suggest this video, I feel it's a perfect demonstration of both Roy Khan and Simone Simons live)" th-cam.com/video/RsMXxxDMFYY/w-d-xo.html
    Kamelot: "Phantom Divine" (A pretty decent song that has a tendency to worm itself into my head, featuring Lauren Hart. With you're decent-ish review of Arch Enemy, I figure this might be right up your alley, despite it's 'formulaic' feel. A strong song with their now lead singer and front-man Tommy Karevik): th-cam.com/video/v8MqvUeDqL4/w-d-xo.html
    Kamelot: "Karma" (The epitome of Kamelot in my opinion, though lacking in Simone Simons impressive vocals, but one that I believe truly showcases the power of Roy Khan both as a singer and front-man): th-cam.com/video/exS-YFyiKZU/w-d-xo.html
    Epica History (Final Paragraph of entry as corroborating evidence for the naming of the band) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epica_(band)#History
    You've entered my realm of musical taste my friend, I have so many more bands and songs to recommend to you if you decide to tread down this path. Symphonic metal is my lifeblood, so i truly hope that you will indulge in it. If so, I have many more recommendations to provide. Keep up the good work, I know it's a pretty cliche phrase, but when ever I just want to relax and listen to some good music with the commentary of someone who is truly knowledgeable in music in general, you are my go to content creator, and I look forward to more from you regardless of who you decide to review. Thank you for all the good videos.

      I've seen Kamelot a couple of times and I met Roy Khan back when he was the singer for Conception. Kamelot always put out high quality music even if i don't always like it all. Tommy sounds exactly like Roy to my ears but i know some people disagree.

    • @justgeo4288
      @justgeo4288 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PNW I have to admit, I am extremely jealous that you met Roy Khan as he's one of my biggest inspirations in my pursuit to become a great singer. I have to apologize for my assumption that you were ignorant of the band, I just had yet to hear your reference them directly and assumed you hadn't heard of them. I'm really sorry about that. I do believe Conception has put out some new songs, so Roy Khan is singing again.
      As for the difference between the two, I believe Roy can hit the operatic sound better, most evident in "Karma" and "Center of the Universe" which is a sound I've yet to hear Tommy achieve in any of the new albums. They seem to have to leaned more towards a darker, heavier tone starting with the album "Ghost Opera" that demands less of the symphonic, operatic, airy sound that Roy could achieve, and Tommy fits the mold for their new direction better. I will admit the initial opening vocals from "Podigal Son" off Silverthorn was pretty damn Roy-esque however.
      I do look forward to a Kamelot review from you, but as I said before, you do your own thing. I'm just along for the ride, though I'm more than happy to help in any way I can. Thanks for the good work.

    I love this song, the video of this performance, and watching people react to it, but personally, I prefer the performance at Retrospect. Perhaps it's because there was an orchestra, and choir on stage with them. Also, Simone's singing is better at Retrospect, however, Mark's unclean vocals are better at the performance at The Zenith.

    When you look at what Therion was putting out around this time, its easier to understand why Epica never got as much respect as the more commericlal Nightwish or a legendary trailblazer like Therion. Its not bad. And Simone is of course awesome, but if you put this next to Gothic Kaballah, Lemuria/Sirius B, Vovin or Secret of the Runes, it gets destroyed.

      Gordon Heaney Completely agree with you, they became painfully cheesy and formulaic. Not that I blame them, that's what people obviously like the most and want symphonic metal to be.
