Im in Portugal,Europe. Here almost all carparks are partially ir totally underground, or are just ground floor. Sometimes the underground floor is not underground on the other side, because of the Hilly terrain.
Here in Spain all car parks in the city are underground. Even normal terraced houses have the garage underground. Madrid also has a massive underground motorway network. Some countries simply have ground that is easier to dig, and they also need to to make the foundations stable. While in Birmingham you can dig a few feet for foundations of a house, in Madrid you have to dig far down, so you may as well turn that into something.
I tried this in our 16 storied building it has no basement but when I tried to open the doors it stopped, waited 30 secs, went down past the allowed max, crashed into the suspension at the bottom, went up to the 16th floor, and then resetted.
Once when I was 7 years old I tried to open the doors of the lift of our apartment while moving to the 16th floor. It locked down and I was having a mini heart attack.
Those lift reprogramming ones because one of his friends helped him to get the right tools for reprogramming but then his friend told he can get fired if his boss or etc... gets him in trouble
He safety breaked (Opened the inner door) then the lift went down to basement 3, he held the door open down there so it would open and allow him to walk down to basement 6, then he rides up to basement 1.
If I had got to the 6th level, I would have walked through the garage up to the top and see where it goes and if I could have just walked out, or if there's another security door for the cars...
I have been in a single speed inner door lift AND I HACKED IT hehe but to get out of me getting stuck when some stupid piece of crap person barged into the lift and make the safety circuit go but it was on the bottom floor so it didn't move so it just reset the lift and started moving
Much better idea having the car parks underground as it saved a lot of space above ground. We should do that in England more often.

When I safety break the glass lift in the shopping centre near my home, it just opens its inner doors, as if it were on a floor :D
Inner doors are wired as the door unlatched. Very simple logic.
