This is such a great demonstration of throwing a bowl. I really appreciate the detailed explanations and two different views of throwing. Thank you, Tim!
Really helpful. Im going to try opening with your technique. I've been having problems with this. It was also helpful to see how you saved the pot and recentered it.
Thank YOU for this vid. I'm involved in a Chili bowl fund raiser this spring and this has inspired me to work on my bowl contribution! Love these vid's!
I've been trying to make bowls for a while, and just could not get the shape right. Thank you for this video! Now I can hardly wait to get on my wheel on Tuesday!!
Thanks for posting this great tutorial. I always struggle with bowls for some reason. Always either collapse the sides from widening too much or the bottom gets too thin after using the ribs. Ugh! Practice, practice! 😂
Thanks Tim, do you have a vid for larger bowls? baking bowl size... I'm struggling to figure out how to leave enough in the base for support while also getting the right amount up into the wall for a decent sized bowl. would love to see how you go about it....
Hey Tim, was watching your low shallow bowl video and thought maybe you could try placing a piece of paper on the rim of the bowl and lightly sealing it to the rim, then trying to remove it :)
Was the yellow rib there just to keep the green one from getting lonely? If you used it, I missed it. Otherwise, great video, especially about cleaning the skirt.
I love these videos so much thanks for all the help! Question what food-safe clay do you use and as a beginner what should I use to harden the clay since I don't have a clay oven?
About how much clay were you using for this? 1 1/2 pounds? more? Thanks. This is VERY useful for picking up some tips and seeing that it CAN be done quite quickly!
Nice jolly and informative video, thanks! Just a beginners question, I get the impression that one does not reuse the clay straight away, and rather start with a new piece of clay, why is that really?
that the clay that was just messed up will be wetter than when it was new. wetter clay sometimes is suggested by folks because its easier to move around but it also a lot harder to pull a wall. Reclaiming the clay, which is drying it out and wedging it so that its homogenous makes the clay closer to new and better to try to throw with.
Hi. I have learned so much from your videos. I am very new but definitely learning and I like that you have reasons for what you do. When you were talking about S cracks and compressing. I get it but in making a flat bottom I keep removing clay (it comes in the center and it’s satisfying to crimp that off while compressing the bottom but clearly this is not th beset way bc I am losing the bottom when I am compressing. Now that I read your rationale that clay cannot be compressed do you have a video more focused on creating the bottom without doing what I am doing? I would love a c
How big are these balls of clay? I can’t wait to try this. I see several tips that will help me a lot. That third one looked like it would have been a nice dog bowl if you had stopped with one pull! 🐶
Hello Tim ! I am a bit confused....someone said to make a small cylinder before shaping it to a bowl....whereas I see you go straight to the shape of the bowl after breaking in.... which method is the better one for a beginner like me ...please help !
The issue with doing it from a cylinder is that when you stretch the rim that far you can end up with a really thin lip. It’s also hard to get a rib in right away... which means more steps more time the clay is wet.
I noticed you didn't explicitly compress the floor after opening the hole. Does using the rib to shape the inside accomplish this when you are shaping the floor?
Alvaro Arnal compression is a myth. We cannot compress the clay, it’s not in a contained volume it’s not a something we can push on hard enough to change its volume. Proper drying is much more important than any kind of pushing on the bottom.
Hi Tim- that's very interesting. I'm still a beginner but this is the first time I've heard that. I've been taught "compress or DIE!" What do you do then to avoid the dreaded 'S' crack? BTW- thanks for all the vids; they have been incredibly helpful in my learning!
Alvaro Arnal s cracks are a result of Harding or stiffening of be outside area of the clay while the softer less dry area changes shape to accommodate that. When the inner part finally catches up it’s shrinking causes cracking on faulty areas. Proper drying and clay prep will eliminate or reduce cracking.
although i agree proper drying will avoid s-cracks, i believe that compressing a plate with a sponge/ wooden rib is very helpful in making sure you don’t have a sloped surface, and it forces some of the water out since the base is quite thin (usually)
Sydnee W have you ever been able to squeeze water out of a piece of clay? Pressing hard with a sponge is likely to give ridges, All that’s needed is a little push either a rib for shape.
Clay is completely and easily recyclable until it has been bisque fired. All you have to do is wedge it back up. If it is too dry, let it re-hydrate with some water in a sealed bag, then wedge it up. If it is too wet, then you need to let it dry out some, plaster bats can make this process faster.
Don't stop! I love your videos. Oh... you asked for questions... ummmm.... Why do I love your videos so much? No, that's obvious. Oh! I've got one! Why didn't you make many videos for so long?
I come back to this video over and over, thank you for it!
I learn more from you in 12 minutes 15seconds than I do in a whole term at college. Thanks mate
Tim you are an amazing teacher and I have learned a lot from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill.
Thanks, Tim! I needed a quick refresher on bowls. You’re the best.
OOOHHHHH!!!! That moment when it clicks! : ))) Thanks, Tim!
The censoring at 9:24 scared the crap out of me
I thought someone was behind me!!
I jumped out of my skin. I'd prefer to hear the word "shttttty"
oh my gawd. That scared the crap outa me
I thought it was coming from my baby monitor! Thought someone was in the room with the baby! Ah!!
Thanks for cutting the second bowl in half and showing where you would trim. Really helped to see the whole process. Great camera views!
I love how quickly a ball of clay becomes a bowl in your talented hands!
Perfect timing! I'm working on bowls this week. I haven't really made bowls as I've been working on better mugs! Thanks Tim!
You're awesome! Thanks for showing us. I'm learning pottery in a local workshop so is really nice to see you and learn more. Thanks! Warm regards!
That was awesome! You are a great teacher! Thanks!
Great demo. Now to remember your instructions. Thanks Tim.
Glad you’re back on TH-cam. Your videos taught me to throw about 10 years ago.

thank you for the great videos. i have a wheel and two kilns and am learning on my own with the aid of youtube.
get it !@!@
fantastic teaching, thank-you!
Best pottery tutorials online hands down. Also the most fun
Thank YOU for this vid. I'm involved in a Chili bowl fund raiser this spring and this has inspired me to work on my bowl contribution! Love these vid's!
Great demo. I'll try the trimming the base early trick. I really enjoy your videos!

Your clay looks very soft!
When you crumpled your first one I was like O-o NOO??
Can't wait to try cutting the skirt off before shaping. All my bowls have had a bit of a "potter's hump" and it's been frustrating me to no end!

MLT Bon they are used on smaller bowls.
I love these videos so much thanks for all the help! Question what food-safe clay do you use and as a beginner what should I use to harden the clay since I don't have a clay oven?
Without a kiln to fire the pottery it’s not going to be ok for food.
this is so good, thank you so much!
I’m crying the beep over the curse word hahahahaha
I lost it at the "beep"

Sherry Ashberger yeah around that much

@@timseepots Thank you!
I died a little every time you smushed a bowl
I love this
What sized rib would you recommend for an exaggerated v-shaped bowl (think oriental style with a small base and steep, angled walls)?
You might not use a rib. They make great curves but harder straight lines. You can start with the yellow zero.
I have a pottery wheel with half of the speed of yours.. Will your techniques work when making clay pots in my pottery wheel.
Bobbin Varghese it can you just will have to move your hands slower.

Deborah Miller these are like 1.5 lbs or maybe two. I didn’t weigh them.

I have a two pugmills that allow me to mechanically reclaim all of my slop and scraps and mistakes.
Which clay do u use? Is it ceramic
I have to get back on the wheel. It’s always 3 months between throwing Something.
Hello, big fan :D
With the direction of the wheel I spin it right handed but I use my left hand the most is that a problem??
The_ Unknown if the wheel is spinning ccw then the left hand is in the middle and the right is outside.
Can you tell me the mixing pls
Im not sure of the question
Love your tutorials. Do you have any ratio you prefer to the size of the foot in comparison to the rim
Brenda Wylie I don’t think I have a ratio but I like to have an outside that I can use as a canvas.
Thanks, do you decorate on greenware or bisque
Both, mostly on greenware.
I'll be periscoping live this week while I paint my illustrations.
Timsee clay what time ? Central, east! West? Thanks
Normally I’m on at 8:30 9 or so eastern.
Don't stop! I love your videos. Oh... you asked for questions... ummmm.... Why do I love your videos so much? No, that's obvious. Oh! I've got one! Why didn't you make many videos for so long?
Wildepix I’ve been doing a lot of live streaming the last 3 years. Mostly on periscope and claybuddies.
I'll have to take a look at those old videos then, assuming they're still up.
If you are on Facebook the group “clay buddies” is pretty amazing.
Yes, I am part of the group, but since facebook doesn't show you everything, and Clay Buddies has a lot of content... I've never seen you live there.
You can follow me, I’ll be on tonight 8pm eastern.
