This is probably the most helpful escalator video I've seen so far - the extremely detailed explanations and slow mo demonstrations are what set it apart. I've been wanting to try this for a couple years now, but there aren't any escalators available to me within several hundred miles of where I live, and when I do go to where there are, the person who's usually with me isn't someone I would trust to be able to successfully spot me if something were to go wrong. I'm still determined to try it at some point, though, because not all places that should have elevators do, or in any sort of convenient place, but do have plenty of escalators in very convenient places.

I've been wanting to try this for about a year, so thanks for showing, you're awesome! (from the comments: When you get in a wheelchair, please feel free to comment on how we as "disabled people" move around and learn to do things an easier and faster way. Till then shut your trap.)

My son-in-law is a paraplegic and does this method on escalators. We had gone to Vegas and the first time I saw him do this freaked me out. But he explained he was taught this method during his rehab. It was fun seeing all of the stares he got.

Rayman-if you don't use a chair how the hell do you know what is and isn't normal, recommended, and TAUGHT?This skill is TAUGHT by physical therapists. It's NORMAL for us 'wheelchair bound' people.BTW, jumping curbs, wheelies, and escalators is in my chair manual. The co. builds these for us knowing how we use em.The risk is in your head.An able bodied person could trip and fall on your family much easier than my chair you just don't think about it, but it's more likely.

Wheelz, that happened to me twice before. If your on an escalator and it stops, it's most likely due to your hands pulling down/back on the black handrails. If/when the handrails slide at a different speed of the steps it causes the escalator to emergency stop. Thanks for the comment, which reminds me to add this point to the blog post today. Rock on brother.

One time I was about to use the escalator and someone said, "There's an elevator over there for you to use." People go up escalators with strollers all the time. It's actually more safe for someone in a wheelchair to go up/down the escalator.

In my 15 years in a wheelchair, I've realized there are 2 types of people... 1) the people who see me on an escalator and smile b/c they recognize I'm empowering myself, or 2) off-duty mall security guards who feel the need to voice their angry negative opinion towards a situation they know absolutely NOTHING about. $100 says your kids and wife would think it's pretty damn cool to see me cruise up the escalator. I'd call you a narrow-minded moron, but your "comments" will paint the picture;)

She'll be amazed to see me going down the escalator, while simultaniously talking on my iphone, slurping on a 40oz soda, and waving to the little kid who's amazed and smiling.

You can find videos on TH-cam of physical therapists discussing and teaching disabled people now to use escalators. There are many user made videos of using an escalator for the first time WITH their physical therapist. It was an airport luggage handler that showed me how to take my SCOOTER on an escalator bc there was no elevator. No, you can't stay in it. Don't attempt without training but a travel scooter can be hauled safely like luggage.

  • @chris1742

You should NEVER EVER go up or down an escalator in a wheelchair!!! What you don’t know and I do because I’m an escalator mechanic. There’s a safety feature on newer escalators called an upthrust safety switch. When you have your wheels jammed into the face of the step like that it can cause the step to lift up triggering said switch. And this will most likely happen at the very top transition. Now you’re stuck at the top of a non moving escalator in a wheelchair. Not smart. Just look up escalator and wheelchair together and you’ll see what will happen to you eventually. Those steps hurt like hell when you fall into them, it’s like a row of razor blades!!
I get your plight, but I have been at investigations where people have gotten SERIOUSLY hurt. Lots and lots of blood.

The salesperson wasn't being malicious. The last thing Macy's want is a lawsuit and negative publicity if you get hurt. Nevertheless, this is definitely a good skill to know. In NYC, the vast majority of subway stations do not have elevators. Quite a few of them, however, have escalators. Just because someone uses a wheelchair doesn't mean that they should be an invalid with no life.

I think the reason why the employee was arguing, is because if you were to fall and severely hurt yourself, you can sue them big time, because you got hurt on their property... So, that's why they would be protective. I don't think anyone would want to be sued if someone got hurt on their property.. especially if they have elevators in the store... I'm disabled to, so I understand that you'd have to go out of your way... but they made proper accommodations, why not use them?

  • @HowiRoll
    @HowiRoll 13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@CarneyFamilyVideos I'm not saying "accessible" routes are a waste.. They serve a very practical purpose for many people. All I'm saying is that I personally would rather not depend on them, and nor should I need to. Also, to say elevators are "much faster" is a stretch. They usually require waiting. I will take the elevator, IF it's more convenient than the escalator. But, if the escalator is right in front of me, I'm not going out of my way to use the "wheelchair accessible" elevator.

Too bad if you're doing this sort of thing and you take out a bunch people behind you, and too bad if somebody ends up getting sued, or, you know, in a wheelchair. Granted, some wheelchair users could manage this sort of thing, but in a public place you have to consider variables - the safety of people around you; which means not being narrow minded, or an asshole with something to prove

  • @HowiRoll

Nope. Each time I get on an escalator I have no plan B... But, the same applies each time you choose to get on an elevator. If it suddenly breaks while you're riding, you are screwed, with no plan B. Either way, you're going to need help, escalator or elevator. The truth is, it's HIGHLY unlikely that either will break, especially during your short ride.. And if by chance I end up stuck on a broken escalator, well I suppose I should've stayed in bed that morning:)

And I do believe he knows what he's doing.
See, a wheelchair is an extension of self. It becomes second nature on how it works, how to make it do what you want, how to do it safely.
Going down escalators in your chair isn't unsafe. It may look like that to someone whos never done it ((As a Wheelchair user, I've personally never done it, and it gave me an anxiety attack watching him)) But he has. And from the looks of it, mastered it.
So, why not just think a bit before speaking? :/

    @HowiRoll 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@CarneyFamilyVideos You're correct, nobody wants to be sued on their property.. With that being said, ANYONE can sue ANYONE if a person falls and gets hurt, wheelchair OR not. If I CHOOSE to use an escalator I should be held responsible for my own actions. As for feeling the need to go out of my way to find the proper accommodations, that's where we differ. I look for a straight line from A to B which is accessible to ME, not a curved line suggested by random people.

And to add, the fact is when you use a wheelchair regularly, it functions as an extension of your body. It becomes very easy to figure out what will make the chair do what, and how to do it in a safe manner.
The fact is that a wheelchair user shouldn't be held back from doing something because it looks unsafe to someone who has never used a wheelchair. The only reason he/she should legitimately held back from it IS unsafe. Wheelchair users are the experts on this. Not able-bodied folks.

@taqdmageranger I agree. And I hope you're careful, and stay safe. I just worry about people who do do it and turn on the business and sue. If you ever got hurt, in some way, the company would have to pay for your injury. I knew someone who did something similar to this, and they got injured pretty badly, and the insurance changed the business, and the business didn't allow him to ever enter their stores again. All I'm saying, is be careful. It's like visibility parking, it's there, so use it.

@HowiRolldotcom I agree, and I believe it's a positive way to look at things... but after all our hard work, getting buildings and companies to provide us with necessary things so we can enjoy the store... we put it to waste? Pretty much like saying "I need an accessible ramp... but I'm not going to use it anyways..." I also know, that elevators are much faster than an escalator.... So, with the added time to get to the elevator, plus the short trip... are you seriously losing any time?

To anyone wanting to say 'this isn't safe' have you tried going up or down a curb in a chair? Transferring to or from a wheelchair? Those have risks too for the people who haven't had experience.
I've done this before. I had to because there was no elevator and he says it like it is; get someone there the first few times you try it to keep accidents from happening. If your chair isn't balanced well, I'd also not recommend this. For the those who can do it right, do what you need. =/ Jeeze.

LP, to clarify, I don't know this guy. I only know of him from this video, & speak in his defense from my own experience as a wheelchair user.
The fact is that riding a WC up an escalator is safe provided one has a) good wrist strength and b) fully functional arms. As long as you hold on tight, it's safe.
And if anyone, wheelchair user or not, is injured on an escalator due to an accident caused by mechanical issues, preventable by simple maintenance, the company involved deserves to be sued.

Do you factor in the velocity of the escalator, the height and angle of the escalator, the amount of traffic on the escalator, and potential for traffic to fluctuate? You might think you're safe doing this, but fuck it up once, land on a kid, for example, and all your can-do rhetoric goes out the window. Sure access is bad, but do you have to jeopardize others' safety to prove a point? There's basically no margin for error with something like this. You're not about to land on your feet.

Still, I can't convince myself that this is the right thing to do. The word "risk" is mentioned in the video. The safety of those riding below is involved. A court would find negligence if they were injured. Wheelchair manufacturers would say they are not made for that. Escalator makers would say don't do it. Peace.

rayman20us just saw your comment.. I promise, a very fat person walking into an escalator is more dangerous than me (an Ironman triathlete) going up in my wheelchair. To you, using zero true experience in the wheelchair world, it’s dangerous. But to me, it’s been “normal@ for the past 19 years. That’s like you trying to project how it must feel to fly a fighter jet.. you don’t do it or live it, so it’s kinda difficult to project the way you might feel. I could keep going on about it, but I’m busy painting my house and washing the car.. you understand.

Really I would have yelled at you too. It isn't safe just because you know how to do it. And on top of that the company doesn't want to get sued and in crap the one time you mess up. People know how to walk up escalators and they still manage to fall from time to time. Ignoring the rules like that is just kind of an asshole move.

+Katiecakes L Would you have yelled at him while he was on the escalator? That certainly would have made it unsafe.
And if companies don't want to be sued over bad things happening on escalators, then they need to properly maintain them. If anyone, with or without a disability, falls and seriously injures himself because *insert company here* didn't properly maintain their escalators, thus causing mechanical issues, said company deserves to be sued.
If companies want to restrict wheelchair users to elevators, then they need to have elevators in locations equally convenient to the escalators.

+Brian Sheehan smartest thing I've read in a while. The escalators are always right in the middle and clearly marked yet the elevators are always off in some corner somewhere with hardly any signage.

Katiecakes L .. I know your comment was from 3 years ago, but I just read it again, and wanted to know if you still feel the same way? Or, have you climbed out of the narrow box you’ve been living in and grown as a human being? Just curious, on a random Sunday afternoon:)

How is this even a discussion? Sure you could fall and get injured, some one else as well. But the same thing could happen if someone WALKS over a street. I am a wheelchair user and actually had to wait for an elevator because people who seemed perfectly fine kept riding it without even offering to get out and walk. So what am I supposed to do? Wait forever? Some places don’t have an elevator. So ... you are telling me, that I should leave and don’t get where I need to be? I get your concerns. But people will train for stuff like this. It is a skill needed because this world is not as accessible as you may think it is. Ever tried going somewhere in a wheelchair? It is hard work. Do not judge something you have no real knowledge about. I did not try this myself yet, but I will try to learn, because someday I won’t be able to walk at all and be bound to my wheels entirely. And as Right now I am having issues and nothing to support me pushing my chair. Pushing from one end of a big store to the other is not exactly well done at times. Saving energy to take the escalator seems like a solution to me. BUT if I feel I don’t have the energy to do something, I DONT. I don’t wanna get hurt either. I am a responsible person.
Bottom line: I get what you are saying, but please try to get what I am saying.

You shouldn't be encouraging this, as weak or elderly wheelchair bound folks may not have these skills. In over 20 years as a security officer in a casino, I've seen this attempted twice. Both times it ended badly. There are also a few videos I've seen floating around of people falling from this jackass stunt. Not all escalators are the same, and of course a wheelchair is at a disadvantage if there is a malfunction causing a sudden stop or lurch.

rayman20us If they’re weak and elderly, I’m not encouraging them to do this. It’s like making a How-To drive video and saying “you shouldn’t be encouraging this... weak and elderly people may watch and try to drive”.... silly man.. lol climb out of that narrow box you’re living in and look around a bit. It’s 2018. And if you can’t climb out of that narrow box you choose to live in, please please please don’t open your mouth and give me your opinion if you ever see me on an escalator. See... your problem is you see it as a “jackass stunt”.. IF you were in a wheelchair, you’d know it’s far from a “stunt”. It’s normal everyday living, just trying to get from here to over there... Honestly, think about that for a minute, bub.

I don't usually respond, but I saw this and had to put in my 2 cents... First, thank you Brian. Your points are perfect, and you obviously understand. On the other hand, LP...you may claim to "understand", but I promise you do not.. It's not your fault. I don't expect you to understand. But with that being said, please keep your narrow minded opinion to yourself. Who the $%@! are you to tell me to pass on convenience?! And please please please stop talking, b/c you sound like an imbecile.

ken lol.. you bought the elevators, just for me? Silly man, ken.. lol Hope I happen to see you while I’m going up an escalator.. to see if you could look me in the eyes and say that in person. Very mean thing to say, Kenny. You’d have to have some real balls on you to say that in person. You’re a keyboard troll. And your an angry guy. I’m sorry 😘
