      Julia have shown us over and over again that it’s the skills that matter most. She can make an excellent image out of ANY lens - prime, zoom, kit , autofocus , manual focus, modern or vintage lens. And I like that she is not a brand ambassador and doesnt annoyingly push products in our face “this is the best lens and this is second best lens” unlike the other photographers out there.

    Using Sony cameras with manual focus lenses it is essential to use focus magnifier because focus peaking is not always precise. It takes 1-2 seconds to magnify, check and correct the focus, and press the shutter button. I even shoot events and concerts this way. For portrait sessions it is perfect. Almost no blurry photos at all.
    I assigned magnification to the C3 button (Sony A7ii), so I can press it with a thumb while using EVF. You can move the magnification area to be slightly higher than the center of the scene.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I used the magnifier a couple of times, but with portraits and my style of capturing natural movement, by the time I focus, zoom back out and compose the shot, focus would have shifted with both myself and the model even moving the slightest amount. So I had used it a couple of times when I found a frame I really liked and just wanted to make sure it was in focus and I also have it set to the same shortcut too :D

    • @valentinkovshik
      @valentinkovshik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@juliatrotti Yes, I understand that with movements and shallow depth of field it is kind of hard to zoom all the time :) but for more or less static shots and larger distances the magnifier is perfect. With moving subject and fast lens, it is unavoidable to rely on the "spray and pray" approach. Especially for photos like you did at 08:25 . You've got impressive results in that situation!

    I’m sooo happy to see so many new videos on your channel! Thank you for your hard work!!😄 I really like the lightning and feel of the pictures you took!🧡 Personally, I really like the look vintage lenses give! I feel like shooting film but digital haha But the only reason why I don’t use it that often is because of manual focus. I feel like I’m too slow at focusing and miss every movement and expression :(

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much and yes I agree!! It feels like you're shooting film but its on digital - best of both worlds ahaha. I think the more you practice the better/faster you will get, maybe you could take your manual glass out when you go on a roadtrip or a walk or something to just practice taking photos of different things!

    I'm so glad you did this! I recently purchased my mirrorless and my old lens did not auto focus so I was stuck using manual for some time. It was difficult at first but then I learned to appreciate it cause it gives you more control! I had encountered the same issues you did with a couple out of focus shots but eventually I got some good ones. Thanks again for posting! This was so much fun to watch. I would love to see a photshoot with a male model so I can get posing tips on how to pose men. Annnnd you can do the shoot with the vintage lens 🙂. Love your work! 💎 Oh and I would like to know more about white balance.

    I really enjoyed this video with the vintage Pentax lenses. I assume these are Takumar lenses with the M42 screw mount rather than the later K mount lenses? I often use a Canon FD 50mm f1.8 lens with both my Canon 35mm SLRs and Panasonic M4/3 mirrorless cameras. I actually used it at an Alice Cooper concert this year in Adelaide that I received a media pass to (shooting from the photo pit.) That lens is probably 1980s vintage though I also use 1960s and 1970s lenses also. Some time back, I acquired a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 lens and I'm keen to put it through it's paces.

    Great video! The easiest way to focus with old lenses, in my opinion, is to assign a custom button to “Focus Magnify” (AEL button in my case) and set the focus peaking to a lower level. (Easily accessible in the Fn menu). I compose first and then I fine tune the focus with the eyes area magnified. It seemed quirky at first but the results are awesome even on a portrait shoot an it’s pretty easy to get used to.

    • @juliatrotti

      Thank you so much and yes I would love to make a review! Dan and I actually have some videos planned for it which we will be making soon - a lot more video orientated since it's a video heavy camera but also some photoshoots on it too :)

    Loved this video, especially the 35mm images
    I highly recommend you to try Super-Takumar (or Super-Multi-Coated) 105/2.8 for M42 screwmount. It's a gorgeous lens no one's talking about. It's the one lens I'll never sell.

      Thank you and thanks for the suggestions! I have the Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 which I want to use next, I'll have a look into these too.

    I also use Sony cameras and manual focus lenses. Focus peaking can be extremely distracting, especially when you have fine detail like trees in the composition and the entire frame lights up! I agree that in moving portraiture like you shoot, magnification is also of very little use. However, I find that in these situations a high resolution EVF like the one found in the A7r4 makes all the difference to focus accuracy. The EVF is so clear that I hardly ever need to use peaking at all, if ever.
    My recommendation would be to use as high resolution EVF as possible when manual focusing without peaking or magnification. I do not need the 61mp of the A7r4 but with my collection of manual focus vintage and M mount Voigtlander lenses, I bought it for the EVF only.

      @juliatrotti  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using a Sony FE to M42 adaptor, anything similar/budget would work for your camera mount though since it's manual :D

    Like theses pictures a lot! It must have been quite difficult to focus manually without using the view finder. If you like vintage look and manual focus, I can recommend to try the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.2. The bokeh of this lens is amazing and below f2 it's also got a magical "glow", that I like a lot.

      I definitely preferred the 55mm, there was something so magical about the bokeh from that one, I didn’t want to stop shooting with it!

    Great idea to try some vintage glass. I can give you some ideas of other lenses that I really enjoy using even for payed jobs.
    I also use the Techart Pro AF adapter when I do not have much time for manual focus or I am super tired to do it. It gives me eye AF with MF lenses :).
    If I shoot manual focus I always use the viewfinder, the screen is so bad in terms of size and resolution and I find it hard to nail focus without magnifier activated. The EVF is much better!
    Peaking - no :) for video yes, but for stills I think that the peaking is not precise and often leads to missed shots.
