As they say you don't know how good of an insurance you have until you file a claim and the traditional insurance companies tend to be better in customer service. I'm hoping Tesla Insurance revolutionizes insurance just like they did with EVs. Tesla is a safe, mass produced, and low maintenance car; insurance should be cheaper.
Tesla's are essentially a high performance sports cars (at least from an acceleration perspective. Add to that the fact that spare parts production and availability has ranged from poor to mediocre. I'm quite certain Elon's Roman style decimation staff reduction hasn't done much for productivity and moral on that front! Basically Tesla have know for a good 6 years that an issue existed. Why no class action law suit I hear you say? I can't stop laughing at this video. This dude, just manipulated data to favour his Telsa argument. So many things are just false in this video. I drive a toyota prius phev and the cost of ownership for a phev here are just overestimated. 1. Anybody that drives a PHEV made by Toyota, knows that the cost of fuel per year would be way less than $2000. It would only be that price he quoted only if the person never charge his rav4 prime. 2. Bro, picked the cheapest insurance cost for Telsa but he didnt for rav4 prime. 3. Again, anybody who drives Toyota hybrid and PHEVs knows that cost of maintenance in 10yrs is way less than what he quoted , when the annual cost is even less than $200. 4. He forgot to add the more expensive tire cost to the list. 5. He forgot to add the cost of depreciation. 6. Telsa is known to have expensive unscheduled maintenance cost than Toyota. If he was comparing his model Y to a BMW/Mercedes, the numbers here would reflective true cost. In summary, all i can see is just a Tesla fan boy, trying hard to lure people to buy Tesla and use his referral code.
Dude CA is expensive! I'm paying $60 per month insurance .13cents per kwh electricity (actually free bc I have solar). And no extra registration fees. Tesla in Vermont is a win-win.
Pretty sure Vermont allows out of state registrations. So people from Cali could register there. Montana too if I remember correctly. Both are lax on inspections and requirements for your cars
I really didn't know that a 3-year-old Model Y car registration was in the $700 range, that is really high. I paid in the $300 range for our 2020 Subaru Forester. That is a difference of $400 between the two cars. If you are paying more for yearly insurance and registration fees with a model Y, to me it is still cheaper or a break-even to buy a regular gas or hybrid SUV over the model Y.
The Wall Connector is NOT an essential accessory. The Mobile Connector kit for only $250 woks just fine for most users and requires no electrician installation fee. How strong is the underbody on a Tesla at preventing damage to the battery in case you run over something on the freeway? Having to pay for a new battery in a case like this would instantly make the Tesla much more expensive than any other car it seems
While everyone says Tesla has less maintenance and that is literally true, you actually should be stopping more of your following teslas guidelines, you should be rotating the Teslas tires more often since it’s only 6200 miles in between
I have a 2023 Tesla model 3 rwd . I live in AZ and registration is highest the first year of ownership but drops about 15 percent every year after. I paid $776.68 the first year and $672.16 the second year. It pays to hold onto your vehicles longer in AZ.
GA resident here with a ‘21 Model 3. GA is a very friendly EV state surprisingly. My state EV registration is $230 this year, not cheap but not terrible. Also, I got a $250 rebate for installing a wall connector at my home and GA Power offers year-round off-peak discounted rates for home EV charging. My insurance is $180/mo tho.
10:37 Why is the Model Y maintenance only $500 for 10 yrs? The tires usually wear down after 20K to 25K & the replacement tires can be costly..I'd say, if you drive conservatively & don't drag race at each street light, you still need to go through new tire sets every 2.5 to 3 yrs or so on most Tesla models...and if you have 20 inch or 21 inch rims, the tire wear on bigger tires will be even sooner & replacement tires costlier.
I agree and disagree. Agree that most folks that are shopping the 2 cars will probably get a regular rav4 hybrid so thats more realistic (the prime is almost impossible to buy and huge mark ups). But if you do compare with reg rav4 theres a HUGE discrepancy in terms of power and performance. The model y would absolutely destroy a rav4 hybrid from an acceleration perspective. I know not everyone cares about that but thats what drives a car’s price up to the moon is performance so it is kinda fair to compare it with the rav4 prime since it is much faster than the regular hybrid rav4
I have Costco insurance and they don't cover california anymore for auto insurance. Great coverage but makes it hard to shop around. My Model Y is about $1300 annually
Colorado: $1090.42 for my 2024 Tesla MY registration. Insurance was $880/yr more than my Jeep. My electricity is under $0.12/Kw any time of the day, so less than $9 to go from 0% to 100%.
@ThreeDogsTwoCatsAndAWife Yea electricity is cheaper but so is gas. Gas in cali is like $5 probably theres its $3. So if comparing cost to a gas car the cost of living affects the gas car also
Thank you for doing this comparison. You should have compared MY Long Range to RAV4 Prime. Because Toyota is AWD and standard range MY is RWD. So add $3000 to all MY numbers for this comparison to be equal.
Given the large amounts it probably won't change the outcome (and if electric works for you but that). However, the prime is a PHEV, which means most of its driving will likely be electric (except when on road trips). So the one line for fuel is not accurate, or you need to compare to a Rav 4 HEV, not the Prime (which will be cheaper, and easier to get).
I'd also compare Model Y and VW ID.4, I'm not sure about maintenance costs, but it will probably be cheaper in almost everything else. And it drives nicely, still has coasting mode, a little bit higher etc.
This was great since I have been wanting to buy a Y and was comparing to a few vehicles, one being the RAV4. Although you compared the base Y to an almost top RAV4, I would have compared the long range Y. I would love to see a video comparing a newer used long range Y to a brand new regular Kia Niro hybrid. That’s what we are comparing and live in CA. Don’t forget the gas tax hike in July. 😢
Factor in resale. Tesla resale drops like a rock because no one wants a ticking time bomb $20,000 battery job. After about 10 years either junk the Tesla for very little money or invest into a new battery that is worth more than the value of the Tesla.
Otoh my '20 MS LR+ came with free life-of-ownership SC. That savings starts adding up, esp. as gas prices go up. Paid for the S thanks to buying TSLA years ago before the 15x splits and doing it in a Roth IRA account, being retired could withdraw with no cap gain taxes. Btw, if you own your home consider solar panels. esp if your electric utility has net metering and TOU rates, thanks to that my last electric 'bill' was a -$64.27. ymmv
I have the toyota rav4 prime and chevy bolt and also 2024 model Y. I had the Tesla universal wall connector installed for free by Qmerit with the purchased of the chevy Bolt. if you drive the Rav 4 Prime normally you will never need to fill the gas tank. even if you do, the most would be 3 or 4 time a year or more if you take it for a road trip. now it is cheaper and more convient to road trip with the rave 4, it gets around 40 mpg. and here in Pa there are no surcharge for EV. It cost around $50 per year. The Chevy is a very good get around city and urban car. Each car have its purpose, so these three works best for my family situation.
The Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime will get the $7500 rebate in the 2026 or 2027 model. Their new battery plant will be online this year and they will start making the Prime models in the USA. The time savings to gas vs charging also is a cost to people. At the end in a couple of years it will be even.
Valid point to be fair. ICE drivers have to drive to the nearest station say 5mins average, fill up and pay say 5 mins. Thats 10 mins the EV driver does not have to waste as they charge at home or work/while shopping/eating etc.. I never even considered the time saving. Thank you.
Elon Musk is smart not to commit to a 25,000 electric car model. He knows a $25000 Plug-in Hybrid from Toyota, GM and Ford is around the corner. All will receive the tax rebate. The non-costal states will buy these cars. Robotaxi will be hot in cities in the costal states.
@usefulrandom1855 Valid point but to be fair, a rav4 prime is a plug in so it also enjoys those same benefits except on a road trip you save time from charging at a supercharger and also not eating pizza and hot dogs for lunch and dinner at a Circle K which is priceless 😂
Arizona is much cheaper to own a Tesla. 5 cents a kwh at off peak times, insurance way less, and when I bought my Tesla 5 years ago registration was $200 for five years, That has gone away but its still not as bad as California.
I just did the same analysis for my friend. But I used a RAV4 Hybrid XLE MSRP $38k bc that's what he wanted. The fuel cost is a húuuge variable. If you can charge at $.09/Kwh & drive more than average, it's a no brainier for Y. If you live in Calif, have PG&E (or SD) it's really a toss-up. I'm paying $0.36/Kwh night rate, it takes a lot of driving to break even. We have to be level, even if I own an Y.
@MrQuay03 kwh is the unit of energy measurement so kwh is correct. So $0.36/kwh is 36 cents for a particular amount of electricity. I know the “hour” in kwh throws most ppl off cuz it seems like a rate but actually kw is the rate, kwh means the amount of electricity over an hour at 1 kw rate
I just got the registration for my used 2020 model 3 in AZ and it's $436. I was hoping it was going to be cheaper since the prices are way down and I was wrong but, could have been worse.
Been driving EV for the last 6 years. Still paying nothing, I mean free for Supercharging and regular charging. Hell yes, you are saving a lot of money.
If this comparison was against the Rav 4 Hybrid, it would be worse for Tesla. The comparison is decent though and I believe in a few years Tesla will be the cheapest to own for sure but not quite there.
Biggest saver is gas and how much you drive. In Southern California I paid $26,000 in gas from 2017-2024 until my car broke down. I paid $7,000 for the car and a little over $3,000 for maintenance (tires, oil changes, spark plugs, misc, etc). Over all $37,000 over 7 years to drive a 2007 Mercedes E-350. I had a mechanic too so I saved money on labor for some work. I bought a 2023 Tesla Model 3 performance in March of 2024 (it was a demo model, so tax rebate). I couldn’t justify buying any gas car (used or new) when I saw this opportunity to get a Model 3 Performance for as cheap as I got it. If you commute & have a charger at home, electric is the way to go. I recognize all those places you showed 😂 Irvine Toyota & the Costco gas on the freeway
Wait… What about the smog check price for plug-in hybrid cars that required for renewal registration? No, the registration for hybrid cars is not cheaper!
If keeping beyond the life of a gas car, math gets much better. If battery is truly a million miles, it can last my lifetime? Also, driving gently on better tires I’m getting better tire life, maybe only 10% less miles?
Simple Unspoken Reality being that a Used Tesla is Seriously resale price reduced. Given the price of a Battery pack..... Only the trully Dim will buy a used Tesla.
Interesting but you did not finish the job so your video is not very useful. You should have subtracted the estimated value of the 10 year old vehicle from the total cost. How much is a 10 year Tesla on its original battery worth? Probably close to zero. Does anybody really want to put a new battery pack in a 10 year old EV? Also on air updates and support are great but will Tesla continue to support a 10 year old product? Apple and Samsung do not and I consider Tesla more similar to them than to a traditional car company.
I hate these videos where the tax credit is applied to cost of ownership. Just put the real price and go from there. If it’s a $45,000 car from Tesla, just say that. The tax credit doesn’t apply to everyone therefore it is not an automatic deduction to the cost of the vehicle.
For almost the same price. You have way more better features with the Tesla. It faster, has self driving, better tech. Only thing Toyota offers is probably better reliability
Better reliability and better customer service. Tesla really needs to get their service centers in order, it prevents a lot of people from buying a Tesla
One important thing is that teslas (except plaid) don't have brake assisted torque vectoring like a lot of other cars, which (at least for me) makes it less predictable in the wet. I wish I knew that before I bought my MYP. I mean, it's not the end of the world, but I value predictability more than just raw acceleration on a straight line.

@@matthewdecloedt1323 they are not the same price. Even if they are the same size, Telsa chews more tires than Toyota.
The savings on a Tesla will get you a new battery if needed 😂 seems like Tesla is the way to go!
Of course you were super generous on the insurance side, may make up the difference right there.
Btw, if you own your home consider solar panels. esp if your electric utility has net metering and TOU rates, thanks to that my last electric 'bill' was a -$64.27. ymmv
My insurance is the same for the tesla as for the 2014 truck.
This also does not take into account the tax rebates.
You forgot time lost when charging
Illinois 2022 Model Y $250, SF $122/month
I think in CA, it's $800 for the first 3 years. After that it starts to drop.
Shouldn’t you use a Tesla wad for comparison because rav 4 is awd?
But low cost EV will be out in 2026, 2027
@usefulrandom1855 Valid point but to be fair, a rav4 prime is a plug in so it also enjoys those same benefits except on a road trip you save time from charging at a supercharger and also not eating pizza and hot dogs for lunch and dinner at a Circle K which is priceless 😂
It's kW btw. kWh is how much energy is used by a device per hour.
When you say price, it's kW.
Great video, thank you
Now do this with people who can only super charge at the average of .36 in California
I just got the registration for my used 2020 model 3 in AZ and it's $436. I was hoping it was going to be cheaper since the prices are way down and I was wrong but, could have been worse.
Battery cost?
Toyota offers $6500 off on RAV4 prime
Sup Chris. Got MYLR April of 2023 and reg was 1100 bucks in Oregon.
i think bro calculated the fuel cost incorrectly. i got 17k for gas in toyota using $5/gal. still cheaper tho!
Thanks for the video
Been driving EV for the last 6 years. Still paying nothing, I mean free for Supercharging and regular charging. Hell yes, you are saving a lot of money.
If this comparison was against the Rav 4 Hybrid, it would be worse for Tesla. The comparison is decent though and I believe in a few years Tesla will be the cheapest to own for sure but not quite there.
I pay 650 every 6 months with progressive
1 way? No comprehensive?
For 5 years 600 dollars in az
$65 at year 6, 8 and 10. So $200 extra for smog check in 10 years
If keeping beyond the life of a gas car, math gets much better. If battery is truly a million miles, it can last my lifetime? Also, driving gently on better tires I’m getting better tire life, maybe only 10% less miles?
$700 for registration? You gotta be kidding me
Not worth in San Diego. Sdge rates are highest in the country... Ridiculous. Can't win with these people
Fun fact: even if free, tire rotations are still a maintenance item and require more often than most cars
New hamphire 2024 model Y 1400 registration
It's a obvious question. Hybrids are the way to go by far(for now). The reasons are overwhelming. I own a prius and a model y.
Tesla is fun to drive.
Whew! 😂. Lots of work. Good video.
what if we lease it, will DMV still charge $700 for registration per year?
Yes
@@thevillage38 rip off
Simple Unspoken Reality being that a Used Tesla is Seriously resale price reduced.
Given the price of a Battery pack..... Only the trully Dim will buy a used Tesla.
You don’t save money in cali. Hybrid is better
Welcome to America where the gov will always screw you.
I hate these videos where the tax credit is applied to cost of ownership. Just put the real price and go from there. If it’s a $45,000 car from Tesla, just say that. The tax credit doesn’t apply to everyone therefore it is not an automatic deduction to the cost of the vehicle.
I mean we can all add the tax credit to 81990. Not hard math. 😂
Tesla parts cost x +5 for everything
yeah crazy
Really? Which ones? Suspension parts are pretty cheap so far.
$37Kis based on savings for gas and repairs..the real price is well above that.. very misleading
if you want to buy a new model the Y, the cheapest version comes out to 46k.
You failed to mention that driving a Tesla verses any ice car is 1000 times better
Hybrid is a better vehicle overall except it's not as fun as the EV's.
RAV4 Prime is ugly
The model Y looks like a Jelly bean in a sea of a million other jelly beans.
Good points, but you forgot to mention you still have to be seen in an ugly car for the next 10 years to gain the savings.
Hybrids suck!
So do you.
*Expensive battery replacement, how many times you paid for battery replacement in 4yrs they are guaranteed for 8yrs* 😂😂😂
10 years old EV = worthless...RAV4 still 1/2 price or more..LOL
