    That first growl in the dark is terrifying. They can’t see it but by the sound of it we know it is huge, ferocious and they are completely out in the open exposed to it with no help. That’s when they know they are dead and you can feel it. Brilliant filmmaking.

      One small detail that would've made it worse is if time they saw it, the wolf's eyes glowed on the dark from the light of the full moon

    There is just so much right about this sequence. The atmosphere. The unseen horror. If you have surround sound, each time the werewolf growls, it comes from a different speaker. What I love about the attack is that it is brutal and completely animalistic and violent. It’s incredibly realistic of which makes it disturbing. This sets the stage for the audience knowing that David is gonna become this monster.

    Always loved the look & design of this werewolf, the thick shaggy fur & big teeth - how a werewolf should look along with the werewolves of The Howling. I don't think there has been any films that bare resemblance to these since, pretty much everything these days is either cgi or poorly written/scripted & directed.

    The sheer terror & fright that this scene instilled in me as a kid 40 years ago was indescribable, as such deep primal fears were powerfully activated (in conjunction with a hyper active imagination!).
    40 years later I still get freaked out, as the desolate rural moorland at night under a full moon & largely enshrouded by a thick impenetrable mist all with that ghastly & horrifying howling of that unseen abomination before the savage attack still works wonders with conjuring ancient primeval fears that lurk deep in my essence.
    That is the Genius of this scene. As memorable & frightening as any in history.

    • @Ryu1ify
      @Ryu1ify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      They're cowards. And if they go out to find it, they risk being bitten by it, and then they'd have to work up the nerve to off themselves too. Not to mention if more than one person survived an attack, and the net population of werewolves actually goes up.

    • @ryanbaker2612
      @ryanbaker2612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve wondered the same thing. You can’t tell me they didn’t know who it was. Stanley we’re all going down to the slaughtered lamb for a pint, won’t you join us? And while we’re at it here’s a knife to the heart cause you’re a werewolf. Problem solved.

    • @itsjordan1042
      @itsjordan1042 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I never understood this either, this movie is great but the whole slaughtered lamb subplot was filled with poorly written plot holes
      In the audiobook they delve in it further by saying that they had a deal to not mention anything about the werewolves but it still doesn’t say much

    • @andrewbland625
      @andrewbland625 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@itsjordan1042 Also, the idea about the town being cursed, but then in one night these two Americans come and essentially lift the curse by relocating the werewolf to London. No more werewolf in East Proctor, problem solved. And wouldn't the townspeople have figured out by now who the werewolf is? Why not kill him when he's in human form?
      It seems poorly thought out in the writing.

    • @Alphanubilus1
      @Alphanubilus1 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Think about it this way. What if they already knew who it was. What if the said werewolf is a dear friend or even a brother and in human form is incredibly kind, there would be a reluctance to just off him. What if this individual wanders as far as is safe to transform and in return is no harm to anyone. I always saw these townspeople trying to protect their own, but was pushed into action by the need to save David and Jack.

    1) Why did the village people not KILL the werewolf since they should know who it is?

      No chance for rational thoughts, let alone altruistic deeds.
      Once the first adrenalin rush passes, he runs back though.
      But then again there is nothing he could have done for his friend. Whether he stayed or ran.

    K i need help, 2 decades for me wondering who is the first werwolf. Film credit goes to Paddy Ryan as first werewolf but who the hell is he? I hate the answer, some random and loathe the paris skin head cult member explanation. Please answer my nigh life-long question.

      I also asked it myself, must be a guy who lives on his own outside the village, and sure they know him there but as a cursed one he is not welcome there. They know his secret, he knows too - he must know or at least guess because of waking up naked after every full moon somewhere in forest or moor. I always was wondering that the people from the village gave the advice to stay on the road, so they precisely knew where it was usually hunting - in the moor, and not always near the road. But the road was not necessarily a safe place, the old lady in the pub was nevertheless talking about murder, although they have got the advice to stay on the road. I dont think this guy has to do with that paris story, but we will never know what his origin has been

      @@dieweissehand think the reference of sticking to the road was more so the lads didn't get lost and if necessary could sprint back to the pub, maybe. Plus the instinct of the werewolf would be to hunt and hide, so the darkness and vastness of the moors would make for the perfect killing ground and stalking of prey. We badly need a prequel to this film. Would be incredible if John landis himself wrote and directed. Missed opportunity there in my opinion. We need another great werewolf film and that might just be it.

      @@neilpage757 yeah, youre right, but how to beat this one... in my opinion the sequel hasnt been good enough... a prequel by J. Landis, maybe maybe

    • @neilpage757
      @neilpage757 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dieweissehand yeah werewolf in Paris was no where near the standard of London. Should have just been made as as an independent film with no reference to AWIL. I think if the prequel was handled correctly, dealing with the struggles of the first werewolf that attacked David and Jack and perhaps how he himself was cursed it could work. Maybe the arc could be he's the brother of Brian Glovers character and has become the village outcast that must be hidden from the world. Perhaps a back story of how he became the hound from hell and a story of how the small community have hidden his illness from the world and at the same time
      try to protect themselves from the werewolf. The residence of East Proctor have probably been on the run most of their lives protecting the secret of their friend before they finally settled and took refuge in East Proctor. In the middle of no where and mostly protected from outsiders. The first werewolf looked quite old after he had been shot and reverted back to human form so the story could be set when he and all the other characters are younger. Fast forward to the end of the film when they are all older, and one night of the full moon , all the residence
      have congregated in the pub when suddenly the door opens and you see the backs of a red and green jacket. Role credits 😀 of course john landis would have to write and direct.
