I'm new to your channel and have been enjoying your podcasts. Congrats for attaining your PhD. Funny how stories about dogs arise when their owners die. There's an apocryphal story of a heroic Newfoundland named Rigel who was owned by Lt Murdoch of RMS Titanic fame. Though William Murdoch perished with the ship, Rigel survived and his barks saved a lifeboat from colliding with RMS Carpathia. Though the story struck a chord with many, it's completely false.
Congratulations, Dr Sedgwick, and thanks for covering Cŵn Annw(f)n without sensationalising them. I do have to point out a couple of pronunciation clangers, though. In Welsh, the stress in words of two syllables or more falls naturally on the penultimate syllable. In the case of Annwfn, that means that the stress is on the 'an', not on 'nwfn' (the 'f' - which is always a 'v' sound - doesn't make another syllable). The two words are pronounced as the circumflex of 'cŵn' lengthens the vowel. If you'd like to check your Welsh pronunciations in future episodes, I'd be glad to help you out
I apologise for my mis-pronunciations. I did check them beforehand by looking up how others pronounced them but unfortunately I still got it wrong. I don't know how to read 'ku:n 'an-ʊvn' so I don't know what I got wrong with the 'cŵn' part. It's a shame Duolingo doesn't include these lessons, instead of simply teaching me how to say I like coffee in Welsh!
I'm always impressed when anyone English even attempts pronouncing anything in Welsh. I'm from South Wales and I'm often stumped myself, then I suss it and then discover it's different up in North Wales.

I'd not heard that one! Funny how these stories seem to stick when dogs are involved.
Congratulations on getting your PhD! Really enjoyed the loyal dog tales, even if they were wishful thinking or a marketing ploy.😊
It's funny how people still like them anyway!
