At the example at 14:19 the second and third compounds would produce 3 signals not 4. There is no hydrogen located at the quaternary carbons in both compounds. Therefore, the answer you selected may not be correct. Just wanted to let you know!

Oops. I meant to add a hydrogen to that 4˚ center to make it 3˚. Sorry about the confusion. I was mostly trying to give an example of looking at the number of signals to quickly eliminate structures.

Nate Wymer I see, that makes sense! Other than that, thank you for the useful video!!

So for the first example it does not matter if the OH peak is broad or not? In lab and lecture they always appear as broad peaks and I'm just wondering if on the ACS it will show up like in the example instead of broader.

Usually the O-H peak is broader but not always. They sometimes like to throw narrower OH peaks on exams in order to mess the students up. That said, O-H peaks are generally pretty dominant so you will definitely notice it, even if it is not as broad as one would normally expect.

Dr. Wymer. I was reviewing your video and wondering why on question 4 the first answer wouldn't also be correct. Wouldn't it produce 2 singlets one from the methyl groups and one from the aromatic hydrogens?

You are correct. The question is poorly worded. The question should have been asking specifically about the signals for the methyl groups. Sorry for the confusion.

Nate Wymer thank you for the clarification.
