- This is the full Q&A session with Patrick Troughton from his final public appearance the day before his death. This was on March 27, 1987 in Columbus, GA at the Magnum Opus Con II.
Found this as part of a project where I was dumping everything on my 30 or so remaining VHS tapes from the 80's to my computer, and then I was gonna get rid of the lot. When I saw what this one was, I thought "that's gotta be late in his life", then I checked the timestamped date and went HOLY CRAP! I looked on TH-cam and noticed it didn't seem to be on TH-cam at all (in full), so up it went.
The saddest part is he said "See you tomorrow" as he as coming off stage.
Edit: I did not shoot this video - I make no claim that it was me that did this. I just found it on a 30 year old VHS tape I still had in 2018. Unlike some people who find lost Doctor Who stuff, I'm quite eager to share it with the public. ;)
I love how in the beginning, Troughton is told to his face that something he was in was terrible, and he agrees with them and explains why. Most actors nowadays wouldn’t do that.
Goes to show how humble he really was.

I read he had just ordered breakfast, yeah probably didn't know what happened.
The heart attack was so sudden and quick that he Was dead before his head fell back onto the pillow. Take away the positive aspects of the inevitable tragedy.. , he celebrated his birthday on holiday in America entertaining Dr Who fans. What a way to go. He would have been 100 next week ❤️

How could you possibly know that? Even if someone was in the room with him literally as it happened, they'd have no way of knowing he was dead that quickly.

Heartbreaking to hear him refer to his future appearance and projects. William and Jon were done when they went, but we could've gotten so much more out of Patrick.

My dad is 65 so 67 doesn't seem that old of an age to go to me. :(

Yes, it's godawful but it's also the last time the then-still living Doctors of Classic Who were all together in a project -- from Pertwee to McCoy. Heck, even Tom Baker played along for once (until he was asked back for the 50th Anniversary and to finish "Shada" for home video as well doing the Big Finish audio plays starring the Fourth Doctor).
That was the last time many people saw the Third Doctor in an original BBC project, charity film/not counting in continuity or NOT.
Dimensions in Time is online but they'll never do a home video release of it because a condition of the actors was that BBC couldn't sell that special on home media. Whether it's because they considered the practice tacky (a charity special should not be sold for profit) or HATED the script, I don't know.
From what I understand, they had another project in development that would have blown DiT out of the water but I guess budget and priorities (must tie in Doctor Who into another at-the-time more popular BBC series that has nothing do with science fiction!) killed the other possibly better idea.
He'd be 100 now. Rest In Peace.
I doubt even Troughton himself knew his talent. He was really a film actor on TV. He feared the life of stardom though so protected his privacy. He was a very charming mysterious little man. Easy to adore, with a traditional sense of humour and full of energy til his last hour. He plays the Doctor better than most give him credit for.
I believe that Patrick was the best actor to play the role. You just have to look at his other roles to see how good an actor he was... Capaldi comes second.
This is great, so little footage of Patrick Troughton out of character. He seems so casual and at ease.

Yeah, I remember a few interviews when he took over from Hartnell (yes, I'm that old!) and a Pebble Mill interview - he didn't seem especially comfortable doing the Pebble Mill interview.
@@indieshack4476Apparently, he didn't like the idea of interviews and being talked to in person, as he felt it ruined the magic so to speak, not considering himself all that interesting.
It was only when he started going to conventions that he felt more comfortable with it.

He looked very well as he was with fans and wasn’t really working. I cannot fathom why he died. Also your pic is a reflection of both Troughton’s work and final year as the 7th Doctor begins his tenure in 1987 and his character is very much like the 2nd Doctor.
Just glad it didn’t happen when he was with the actual fans at the time…….always amazing how it only seems to happen when they’re alone.

Yes very sad but he looks pale in this and his doctors warned him to take it easy because of his heart condition.

My wife Kim and I were at the convention... arriving the next morning. As we were trying to get our bearings he walked past us... chatted with a few fans along the way. We were tempted to go up and see him but figured there'd be plenty of time later... he looked a bit tired and so we didn't want to bother him. He got on the elevator. Later in the day friends on the con committee took us aside in private and told us what happened. We went up to the con suite. Another friend was there... he knew the family and he was in the other room on the phone with them letting them know what happened. A very sad day. :*-( Feels like a lifetime ago. RIP Patrick!
Pat had finally learned to enjoy his status as a member of a very small group of very special people. I met him at his first convention and he was still very guarded. The fact that I behaved professionally got him to relax with me and I got a great interview. I watched him open up more and more with every convention he did.
I had a part staked out for him in a series I was developing at the time. I really wish we'd gotten to make that show.
It's weird watching this, knowing he would pass away the following morning. Still, it's nice to see the panel in full, hearing his response to questions about his era and some of his movies. And to see what he was like in person.
Got into classic dr. who by watching the war games. He is definitely my favorite doctor
I started with Unearthly Child but I was blown away by the recons of The Highlanders. Even when there isn't really any footage, the snaps and audio tell you he was just brilliant.
I worked that convention...as I did the first Magnum in Macon GA. I'd been up all night when we were informed of his escort not being able to get him to answer his door. Roland had the management open it and found him. It was horrendous to hear we'd lost such an icon. :(
I have only ever been with one person who died in the room while I was there. It is not something you walk away from feeling the same way ever again.
@@Robert_Manners Quite right. On april 10th 2007, in the evening, I was with my cousins and my parents and my aunt and uncle at my grandparents and there was fun and laughter and joy. Everyone was having a good time. And then the next day, my grandfather was dead. It still feels weird today. The one thing that makes me smile is that we, his grandchildren, his children, his wife, in short his family, were all there on the final day of his life.
It's even sadder when you realise that, technically, he was the youngest doctor to die. Bill Hartnell was 67 and 3 months, Jon Pertwee was 2 months short of his 77th. But Patrick Troughton was only 3 days after his 67th. SO sad.
Hartnell had the worst health and worst mental state. Was a shell of himself even when making the three doctors

He had very high blood preasure due to a workaholic nature. Repeatedly ignoring advice to take it easy from Doctors, despite suffering several heart attacks.
I recommend reading his biography, as it details how much stress he was under to support his families.
He was clearly having a good time that day. Sunglasses on the back of his head, kicking back and playing the recorder before the panel, having a honest fun conversation with the people recording, just being cool. Sad to know this was the day before he passed, :(.
I saw this in person, but I didn't have time to go back to the hotel for my video camera before it started, thanks to the ULTRA-slow hotel shuttle. So, the only copy of it is that lady's that insisted on getting such a big camera that she couldn't control it. (She specifically told me she got the biggest camera possible, and about half way it's clear her shoulder is getting sore which is why she starts shooting the ceiling at one point.)
I can't remember her name anymore but she says her brother's name is Perry Pertwee in the video.
If I had brought my camera that afternoon and lugged it all over while I registered and everything, I would have used a tripod. That was one of my biggest regrets, that I didn't tape that panel. But, such is life!
I arranged the video room off the convention center property because Roland Castle (the convention organizer who I knew quite well) refused to have one due to his ongoing war with Lionheart. I stood in line to get Pat's autograph and invited him to come to the video room, and he absolutely latched onto "The Dominators" for some reason and was really excited about seeing it again because, as he told me, "I haven't seen that one since we made it!" That's why he keeps talking about it during the Q&A.
Quality could better but it doesn't matter in the least. I'm just glad to see this.
For a 30+ year old VHS tape, I'm surprised it still ran let alone how good the quality is. ;)
I was watching an episode of the Two Doctors being broadcast on Channel 2 WGBH in Boston when they announced over the closing credits that Pat had died. So sad. 100th anniversary of his birth coming up on March 25, 2020!
Yes a few tribute videos were uploaded yesterday. I was at home watching the 'Tomb of the cybermen' and was cross referencing against imdb when I thought I would check on Patrick Troughtons profile page only to realise it was the 100th anniversary of his birthday in 1925.
I was almost crying when I watched this, Patrick Troughton is my Doctor.

That's the thing we walk around each day and so often think I will do that tomorrow. We leave work and say see you tomorrow. We enjoy time with friends and family and say see you tomorrow. One day we will have run out of tomorrow's sadly. The trouble is that you don't always know when so you often keep on planning your days and weeks even when you won't be around to actually make it happen.
I can't believe that he only died hours later, ordering his breakfast! I wish there would be more information on him, imdb and Wikipedia only have limited information in my opinion.
He was a very private man his son has wrote a autobiography on him if that interest you

@@JoeSiegler it's also weirdly apropos considering how much he talks about missing episodes too (Space Pirates/Abominable Snowmen). This video then went "missing" for 30 years! Weird...
Well, it wasn't missing as such, I knew exactly where the videotape was. ;) Just haven't looked at it I imagine since the early 90's. Luckily my old gear still worked so I could capture it.
Well, it's not like it's the only copy. I have one too. I used to have the name and address of the woman that filmed it, but I've since lost it. At one point, I looked it up on the internet and found that she (or another family member) was selling copies of the video. I wished I'd bought a copy then. My own copy is probably a bit better than this one but having a new copy off the original one would still be better.
I never claimed I was the only person with it, nor that I have the best copy either. Just that I found it on my shelf - took a look around and saw that it didn't appear to be here, so I sent it along for others to see. I make no claim of authorship or first or anything along those lines.

Less than 16 hours before his passing, signing for his beloved fans. Truly he was a national treasure, and so unfortunate that he couldn’t have lived much longer.

I loved Pat. I had the privilege of meeting him and then working with him on a documentary I was producing. I shot the last on camera interview with him just weeks before this.
I vividly remember the early morning phone call from friends at the con, telling me he'd passed. They were coordinating with Nick Courtney and the other guests on how to tell the fans in attendance and his family. I was given the go ahead to call some news outlets with the news. There were a few of us who managed to get Pat's untimely death reported in the American media.
The reason I was asked to make some calls was because of my long association with the series as well as being a professional journalist. I knew people at various television news departments as well as some newspaper editors who would take my word that the information was true & accurate. Something that seems to be missing in current journalism.
I was 10 when he died and was sort of vaguely aware of it happening. If I'd known even many years later that one day we'd be able to see footage of him the day before his death it would have seemed ridiculous...but here we are. The internet has brought the distant past into the ever-present and it's bizarre.

The original source video is NOT mine - I don't even know whose it is. But I did find I had the full video on an old VHS, so I threw it up here - at the time there were only clips.

this was previously posted by another youtuber years ago. i remember seeing it and watching it. Sadly I didn't get a chance to download it before it was removed for whatever reason. It was also better quality (i'm guessing their tape had not degraded like this one has). But seeing it up again even like this is wonderful. Excellent find:)
This brings back some lovely memories of a Doctor Who event in Minneapolis in 1986 - Patrick and Colin appeared together and were absolutely wonderful. The phrase "Miss Piggy" still makes me smile.

It's sad to see him coughing so much, which can be an indicator of some pretty serious cardiac issues, knowing he'd had a heart attack before and was about to have one again, so sad

It’s called smokers cough.
Patrick was a heavy smoker in his early career he did give it up in the late 60s but sadly the damage had been done as he had to have a operation but still had scars .
I was 6 years old when he passed. I was living in Columbus GA then. I remember my mom saying she wanted to go to see him. But she didn't get to.

Watching him on the stage he has all the drive and energy as he always did when performing 🎭 and telling stories to people who loved him and his work.
So grateful that we have had the chance to see more of his episodes after they were found as he is and always will be my favourite Doctor Who since I first got to see him in the 'Seeds of Death' when it was released on VHS in 1985 omnibus version. I didn't get to see him in the five faces of Doctor Who 1981 repeat of 'The Krotons' as I was only 7 and my mother controlled the TV in the house after my father left home.
When I got older I started to watch the VHS releases. We were lucky to get the Troughton stories earlier than others, however due to the low archive holdings of second Doctor episodes we did not get many.

I'm so sad watching this. He was 67, my dad is 67. He was too young. People say Hartnell was old when he died but Troughton was younger. So sad.

It's still desperate to remember the cover of 'Celestial Toyroom' reporting on his death. The first modern Doctor really and the reason it's still going today. I think he identified the character both with himself AND as an outsider and that has been vital in preserving what is really an archetypal British eccentric.

Crazy to think this was only 9 years after they stopped junking the DW episodes. I wish he lived to see more of his episodes being discovered - when he passed away practically all his episodes from his first two seasons were still missing.
He also seems to correctly predict that "fans" are secretly holding onto some copies out there...

The mind robber is the best Patrick Troughton because series 6 is my favourite series of his era
It is sad that he died so young. However I keep thinking about it and I wonder if it wasn't a preferable way to go in some ways. He was in the middle of doing some of the things he loved to do, he never faded out of the public eye while he was alive, and it was quick and not lingering. I think of the way some of his fellow actors went, and this doesn't seem that bad. I'm not sure.

This is incredibly fascinating to watch but also very sad. I wonder if he was feeling anything a little unusual when this was shot like a cramp in his chest or something...that he didn't want to show to his fans. I hear the occasional coughing during his presentation and that can that sometimes suggest some chest congestion.
This is when his work only had 5 stories available to view.
Of course 2.75 stories would return in the archives and yes the animations.

I believe Patrick Troughton was supposed to visit WVIA-44, the PBS station for northeastern Pennsylvania that year, because they postponed the Dr Who traveling show appearance until summer due to his untimely death (no pun intended). Instead of Pat, I got to meet Sylvester McCoy.
Talking about Nicholas Lyndhurst - that would be very early in his career - obviously Nicholas has just been appearing in the new Frasier show - which will be the first time many Americans will have become aware of him ...

What pisses me off is that he and Hartnell died too young they should have been given two more decades to live!!!!!!!!!! He could have at least seen the tomb of the cybermen!!!!

I have this same copy or there abouts - that is to say, it's crap quality. I digitised my copy years ago, and did some work to clean it up a bit. Not a whole lot to do when you don't have the original VHS source - ie working from a copy of a copy etc... not the original, but it is better.
A few years back someone uploaded just the bit right at the end, when he has walked off stage, and then comes back on camera and says he'll see you tomorrow... And it was just crystal clear. Obviously was very close to the original print... No idea if it's still online anywhere - I wish it was available...
After seeing this I really wonder how the news got out to those people at the convention that he had died and what their reaction was.
My take on that is it was announced to the main group in the big auditorium the next day. I've never run into anyone who was actually there.
Crazy to think in the next 10 years we will have most likely lose doctors 4-7 not sure if I want them to go in order but it’s sorta weird how they have so far and have died die to their hearts giving out same when they had sure kind hearts

Now some doctor who what-if stuff:
William Hartnell
lived to see the "Five doctors" 20th anniversary special. Medics pleaded him not to perform as his health was at an all-time low, and doing this could potentially destroy him. He didn't listen and accepted the BBC's offer to come back. Unlike Patrick Troughton (who at this point was going grey), rather than wearing a wig to cover his bold head(he'd been battling leukaemia so chemotherapy), Hartnell decided to stay bold so fans could see what he'd been through for this special.
Sure enough, his health took a massive nosedive he was hospitalised just days afterwards. He died in his sleep from a stroke on March 28th 1984 at the age of 76, eerily enough just 2 days before Peter Davidson ended his run.

Patrick Troughton
lived long enough to join his fellow doctors on the "Dimensions in time" EastEnders crossover. While at the American convention in 1987, he suffered a heart attack in his hotel room immediately after ordering room service. Just in time for the hotel employee to find him silently screaming on the floor. He had to perform lifesaving and told a passerby to call 911 and that Patrick Troughton was having a heart attack. Paramedics arrived within the hour and wasted no time to resuscitate Troughton, while thousands of whovians waited anxiously outside for any signs of life. There Troughton appeared out the entrance in a wheelchair with a breathing mask and a blanket. And suddenly thousands of voices cheered and applauded in relief. He was flown back to England the following day and reluctantly agreed to retire and focus on recovering. But then 6 years later Troughton made a surprise appearance in the "Dimensions in time" charity crossover with EastEnders. He appears in the beginning making an urgent distress signal to the fourth doctor telling him that the rani have invaded the doctors timeline and he needs help, before getting cut off. Then he appears again at the end to talks to the seventh doctor through transmission. they argue a little then second congratulates and thanks seventh and is about to bring out his flute, but seventh cuts him off before he can play.
This special marked his last ever work before his death and his only work after coming out of retirement. He died on February 17th 1994 at the age of 73 after falling down the stairs. By the time his postman found him, he was already dead. The coroner gave the verdict that he had a cardiac arrest and broke his neck and ribs on the way down and also suffered from kidney failure. His death was announced later that day.

lets just say he lives to see a lot. "Destiny of the doctors" video game, "Scream of the Shalka" miniseries and to see how the 2005 relaunch reintroduced Doctor Who to modern generations. He appeared voicing the Third doctor alongside his other fellow doctors in the 1997 PC game "Destiny of the doctors". After this he decided to go into semi-retirement keeping close contact with Doctor who and Worzel Gummidge fans and making occasional TV interviews. In 2003 he made a cameo voice appearance in the flash animated "Scream of the Shalka" made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Dr who. Also in 2003 he began making voice-over appearances in a number of Big Finish audioplays up until his death. In 2006 his incarnation of Worzel Gummidge made a comeback in the form of "Worzel Gummidge & friends" airing on CBeebies for 3 seasons and 28 episodes. In 2007, when Noel Clarke was taken ill, Jon was asked to appear on the Dr who edition of Weakest Link. He agreed. He made it up to round 4 before getting voted off tactically. That same year he became the only former doctor to date to receive a knighthood for his services to television, becoming Sir John Devon Roland Pertwee. In 2009, to celebrate his 90th birthday, he made a guest appearance on "The One Show", where he talked about how he got the part of Third Doctor and answered some of the fans most biggest questions.
His health wouldn't start to decline until mid-2011 when he contracted Hepatitis C. Its believed he accidentally contracted it during a blood test, and a needle which had not been properly cleaned. Fans from across the globe sent their condolences and best wishes to him, to the point that he made a facebook post where he read out his favourites. When Dr Who's 50th anniversary celebration came around, the BBC asked Jon if he wanted to be involved, particularly in the episode "The day of the doctor". He agreed, but his wife explained that whatever involvement he did have would be very limited due to his ill-fading health. To get around this, the BBC and Jon reached an agreement to record his lines in his home. Christopher Eccleston was set to reprise his role as the Ninth doctor but turned it down. In his place Jon would appear as the Third doctor. His scenes were filmed between 2nd and 10th of April. His first scene was reminiscent to that of William Hartnells in "The three doctors", where 11th, 10th and War doctor are trying to land the TARDIS in the tower of London but can't. Then they get a transmission from 3rd doctor who tells them to stop arguing and find a way to cancel the detention. This scene was filmed while he was in a wheelchair, in front of a green-screen of his TARDIS console. Another scene was near the end of the episode when 11th is talking with the curator, where it cuts to 10th and 3rd are having a similar simultaneous conversation revealing the other two to be trapped in a paradox. They even make reference to the upcoming 12th doctor and Steve Moffat. Although it was the voice and face of Jon Pertwee, it was actually his son Sean who provided the body of 3rd doctor with Jons face plastered over via a wig, motion capture and deep-fake technology.
"The day of the doctor" would prove to be Jons last ever acting work. On April 24th 2013 while production of the episode was still underway, the BBC received the news that he had passed away that afternoon. It was believed that he was taking a nap and suffered from heart failure and died peacefully in his sleep. He was at the ripe age 93 years old. His death was announced the following day and it was told that The 50th anniversary episode would be his last ever appearance. "Day of the doctor" was dedicated to his memory.

@@JoeSiegler I read it, but it only says that you didn't film it. Doesn't give the chain of custody (so to speak) of the tape, so I wasn't sure if maybe it was gotten from someone you knew or was some kinda garage sale or thrift store find. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
@@professorhaystacks6606 No worries. Yeah, it was just sitting on an old 30 year old VHS tape that had random Doctor Who stuff on it. I have no memory now of where I got it originally. But wasn't me - just got a copy from someone else - another person who I've forgotten who they were.

Anyway, this sort of thing is why people keep hoping there'll be a color copy of Invasion of the Dinosaurs ep 1 or The Mind of Evil episode 3 (or 1? I forget which) showing up on US VHS recordings (and I think there were a few others). Though those have been manually recollored at this point (and I need to get the blu ray for Invasion of the Dinosaurs at some point: I have the DVD with the crude chromadot color).
@@professorhaystacks6606 It's all good. I never correlated my posting of this to the concept of finding things on VHS like missing episodes. Wish I could remember where it came from, but too many decades in the rear view mirror now.
