Build a Predator Proof Chicken Run

  • Josie and I build a chicken run for the new chicks. Then we attached it to the "Hen Den". By adding wire to the bottom of the chicken run it will help stop burrowing critters from getting in. This is a pen that we can use if we are gone for a couple days or while the chicks are still young. This will NOT stop bears or large animals of that sort. But for the smaller critters like chicken hawks, possums, racoons and bobcats it will do a pretty good job. If you have trouble with weasel, minks or snakes in your area you may want to use a 1/2" hardware cloth in place of the 2x4 welded wire.
    Note: If you are going to be keeping the chickens in this kind of a setup it would be wise to cover with tarp or a roof. Moisture/rain can cause issues with odor and bacteria.
    Material used on project:
    100' of 2x4x36" welded wire, (could use 36" chicken wire but not as strong) 5 - 2x4x10, 3 - 2x8x10',
    7 - 2x4x8' all treated lumber, Staples and 2" screws. For the door 3 - 2x2x8' plus latches and hinges!
    Please check out our OMG Amazon site. It won't cost any more than Amazon's regular prices: www.amazon.com/shop/ozarkmoun...

    In a week my wife and two children are going to help build a chicken run behind my house. We have coyotes around here. It is going to be predator proof. You walk like I do, arthritis no fun. Fresh eggs and we know what they are getting for food too. Keep up the good vids.

    Many different designs for each type of project are also included. For example, there are hundreds of designs th-cam.com/users/postUgkxb2mhCug-GkCWrq69Ce2I0nM0D4QpxAqu for outdoor buildings, from small sheds all the way up to a complete stable. Choose whatever type of shed or storage house is right for you. Pick from fancy ones or more utilitarian designs.

    A racoon can reach in through 2x4 welded wire, grab a chicken by the neck or the wing and attempt to pull the bird through the wire until either the wing or the head pop off.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you have trouble with those kind of critters do what I did. Put 1/2" hardware cloth around bottom 3' high. We just zip tie it to other wire. It will also serve to keep baby chicks in when you first start letting them out. We have loads of coon and possums and have never had a problem. If you want to add it higher, your choice.

    How do you keep predators out with that large of an opening in the fencing? Anything smaller than a coon can squeeze right in.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for comment. At a later date I added chicken wire to the bottom of the fencing. That was to keep chicks in and will also help keep critter from getting in. I have a video on an auto door added to the chicken house. It shuts them up at night. I also tell in the discription that if you have trouble with weasels, minks or snakes you may have to use smaller fencing/wire. We have never had an issue here but your location may. If so I would use 1/2" wiring as stated in discription. Thanks again!

    Thanks for the video! I am looking at building a run for my chicks. I have a few questions. What is the length and wide of this run? Did you just use 2x4s and 4x4 to build it? How much did it cost to build? Great lookin run! Thank you for this video!

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Hannah for the questions. There is a list in the description on lumber. As far as cost, I really don't remember but I will say this. Lumber prices has went thru roof. If you have a couple different places you could compare it would be a good idea to do so. Good luck with your build.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats

      Hi and thanks for watching. I used an18 Gauge 2-In-1 Air Nailer/Stapler. It's a cheap one I picked up at Harbor Freight after my Craftsman died. It works better than my old one did. The staples I used was 18 GA X 1/4 In. Crown 1/2 In. Galvanized Staples. We decided to let the chicks out early and the 2x4 welded wire was big enough they could get thru so I put 2' high chicken wire around bottom and over the top of the welded wire with zip-straps. I'ts been working great. They are big enough now that they are ready to free range just as soon as I clip wings and if it ever stops raining. Have a great one and thanks for watching! / Jim

    How did it work? I just keep hearing we need hardwire to keep them safe..I am starting and used chicken wire 😵‍💫😰 need to upgrade it but now sure what to use.. hardwire is expensive

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems every kind of wire has went a little stupid on price. I guess it all depends on what kind of critters you have around. If your taking coons an possums I think chicken wire is fine. If your talking mink or weasels then you may want hardware cloth. I used 2x4 welded wire all over and then wrapped the bottom with chicken wire. Mainly to keep little chicks in. I have yet to have anything get into my chickens. I did have to get rid of a bobcat that was killing them during the day in the pasture. But he won't anymore. Also I put a tarp over the top for shade and rain. Good luck!

    Question: what size is the metal cloth? have you had any issues with rodents getting through the metal cloth?

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have not had and problems in this area but snake, rodent, minks and small critters like that could get through. It's a 2x4" I would go with 1/2" if there is a problem with those type critters in your area. I put regular chicken wire around the bottom with plastic straps when the chickens were small to keep them in and just left it. We also close the chicken up at night in the chicken house when checking on the goats in the evening just to be safe. But have had no problems when we didn't close them up. Thanks for asking and watching!
