I think you can pet the older ones but not the young one since older one already know how to do stuff on their own but young one can't so they rely on their mother which will abandon them when their child get touched by a human, or when the young one get older
Definitely makes sense pragmatically. They lack efficient land movement options and don't have the weapons to effectively kill people. Thus, they show kindness so that we'll not only spare them, but also bend over backwards for some of them and feed and protect them.
