Clean up of gardens, orchards, vineyards, lawns, flower/herbal beds is like baby diapers - never ends in caretaking the little infants. Once completed in one season (event) , need to go back and do it again in the next event ... (huff, huff, puffff ....) ... - until all is accomplished until the next season (event) !!! Keep the pruning implements clean, oiled, and sharp !!! And have proper composting and garbage facilities in which to process all the waste back into viable soil matrix.

Two questions: He says he drip-waters slightly in July, August and September, and uses an all-purpose fertilizer once in the spring. What kind of fertilizer exactly - what ratios? And should I cut it all the way back (and when, optimally) or do I need to leave a third of it or so? I don’t want to kill it, but I’m not sure it’s doing any photosynthesis. Will it just go dormant in winter if I cut it down almost to the ground? Thanks.

This guy is smart . At 73 he has given me tons of knowledge . I'm in MO. I Never know what the weather is going to be . But I've left tomato plants in the ground over the winter and they came back . I grow eatable plants like you would flowers . Looks pretty and you can eat it .
Hi Brian. Thanks for all these great videos recently. I love them. Looking at the plant next to the lavender in this video. I am pretty sure it is common Thyme. As you know Thyme comes in many varieties. Some creep along the ground and some grow like a bush. The bush type needs a good trimming once a year or so. But be careful not to trim it to low. If you see new leaf growth on the lower stems, then you can cut back to them. Happy gardening.
Hey Brian. I live in rainy Scotland, U.K.. I wish i can send you photos of my lavender. Clay soil rain most of the time. Planted in stones. My lavenders looks amazing. Am not sure what i did but whole neighbourhood enjoyed the view this year.

I sympathize, Brian, I got stuck with a huge pot of Galangal that needed dividing on my way to re-pot some kiwi fruit seedlings in the morning. I was still dealing with it late afternoon, but at least some of my friends will end up with some potted galangal and I now have a plot of it in the ground (much bigger than expected).... it really put up a fight!!!!!!! Today I am re-potting the kiwi fruit until I can find a place for them. Loving the videos and the new property, Cheers Muffy from Oz (Australia)
Lavender can definitely get out of control fast. My mom had some here and I finally took it all out because the location it was in was terrible to keep up with. Glad to know how to plant and grow it now though because I have a small front bed I'd love that to be in.
Glad to for this video/report. I have a lavender plant that is down a bit of a slope from a plant that wants lots of water. I had been thinking that the lavender wasn't looking too happy, & now I think I know why. So I'll try to find a new spot for that lavender.
You continue to deliver succinct and to the point information that works so very well. For me in the Sacramento area, lavender works very well because we are so dry and have such terrible soil in general in areas away from rivers. Deer do not eat it! Thanks.
I’m really glad you mentioned sand. I have a few piles of sand I was considering adding to my raised bed. I wasn’t sure if that would be okay. The bed could use better drainage.

Start one thing and oh, wait, this needs this, and that leads to something else, etc. lol Now lavender, ugh when I first started trying to grow it with my other herbs it was a nightmare! I had rich organic soil and watered and dying and nothing lol FINALLY, read about it, planted it in the worst possible place in my herb garden and bingo! HUGE plants and going like gangbusters for years now! lol I ignore it. I hardly water it at all and it just keeps on giving. The soil was so hard I could barely get a shovel in and just planted on a mound of some dirt n let it go. I have other areas like that too now around the house exterior and am planting....you guessed it, LAVENDER!! Thanks for the tips!!! The gardens are looking great! :)
I'm less than a novice in gardening but I've seen videos where they plant in a pile of rocks where it's above the soil. I had a hard time finding poor soil so I used 2 year old raised bed soil that had very low or completely depleted nutrients. I planted in a fabric grow pot to see it that's enough drainage as an experiment since fabric pot aren't known for water retention. They seem to be thriving at the moment so time will tell.
Great to know... maybe that's why my lavender hasn't done as well. I was babying them too much ! Will try again next year, ignoring them more and no compost

You mention that one lavender you have that was on the property and I myself looked it up and this is what I came up with: LEMON-SCENTED LAVENDER - LAVANDULA PEDUNCULATA Ornamental and aromatic plant for borders, rockery, hedges and pots. Evergreen aromatic 1m tall with flowers in spikes from which long blue purple petals appear. Greyish leaves. It's a perennial. Love your channel, love to you and your family. I have very heavy clay soil in Zone 6B. I've had good success with lavender by digging about twice as deep and wide as the pot and mixing 50/50 original soil with pea gravel. The mix seems to give enough drainage for sage, thyme, and oregano as well.

That unfortunately happens to me all the time. I'm trying to make a list of things I want to do and try to stay focused. There is just so much to do in so many places and it all needs to be done at the same time! LOL
Thanks. I am going to plant lavender in the front yard. I want to put yarrow and sages in between. I also started some cosmos flowers. I'd like to make this a natural hedge that will bring in pollinators. Sounds like these are all plants that will work in soils that are on the rocky side and good for the drought we have in So Cal. I purchased an Einset grape that we planted in the sunniest part of the yard and will be putting in two espalier apples as well. Any other suggestions anyone has? I pulled out most of my front lawn and am going for an edible front yard. Having loads of fun.
I have 17 projects in progress. Ok. Maybe not that many but it seems that way! 16x20 greenhouse rooted 2ft in the ground and using that dirt for the next projects... looking for one or two kiddie pools to make a tiny pond to draw in dragonflies(!), cut wood for a mushroom garden, larger pieces of wood to set out front of the yard to bring in more pollinators, etc etc. I may be out of my league here😆😆

Hi Brian, I think your plant that you don't know the name is: Santolina or Lavender Cotton (Santolina chamaecyparissus), a favorite of Mediterranean gardens, is a beautiful evergreen shrub noted not only for its dense, fine, silvery gray-green foliage all year round but for its drought tolerance. Blooming occurs in summer with a display of small button-like bright yellow flowers, but Santolina is mostly grown for its foliage. I knew it looked familiar as I had it in one of my past gardens, but I finally remembered! Now I can sleep! Enjoy!
I always kill my lavender and this explains a lot. My one plant was planted right next to my rosemary which is thriving, going on 3 years . I just noticed my lavender was gray todays 😢

Brian, I laughed when I heard your opening because that happens to me all the time! I go out to do one specific things, and ten different things catch my eye! We've tried lavender before with poor results, and I think it was because I was overwatering; so did learn that from your video ... (Interesting though: I have friends in England who grow lavender beautifully, and the climate there, as you know is super wet, so I wonder why the moisture doesn't affect those plants ... perhaps a different variety? Or the plants have adapted? Hmmm)
You're supposed to water lavender? LOL! I think I've watered my lavender in a large container three times this year, and I fertilized it maybe twice in the last four years. Poor thing, it is starting to show some stress, so I think I will give it a little love to perk it up. I read the comments just to see what folks thought that other plant could be: artemesia? thyme? another lavender? santolina (lavender cotton)? The question is, did the foliage give off any aroma when you were cutting it?
That's how I always end up working. Go out to start one project then start messing with another and before I know it I'm working on 3 or 4 different jobs and ends up not even completing one.
I unintentionally propagated some by just plucking branches (pick a flexible one that is green with leaves not a woody piece or the flower, you should be able to tear it off with your hands) and sticking it in the soil next to some snowpeas to ward off mice. It ended up rooting so I've got little lavenders all over now.

@@Yowzoe he said organic fertilizer, I like to use Plant tone fertilizer from Espona, it is used by many Gardeners on TH-cam, hope this helps

Try wooly sunflower. It likes full sun and rocky soils. It also supports pollinators. I have mine in the same pot as lavender and yarrow.

The plant next to your lavender is Silver Mound artemesia, a type of wormwood I believe.
And they love a good cut back!!
Lavender is a natural anti-flea product if you have pets. Does it grow indoors well?

Interesting. When I have cut back my lavender, they never regrow. It just stays dead stalks with no new growth at all. One of them even died.

I think I don't have any luck with lavender. Whenever I purchase one, they always dry out and turn grey on me. 🙃
my lavender is actually thriving in compost. Needs a good haircut though

Check to see if it's the right type for your climate. I stratified and started a bunch from seed, only two survived. Getting ready to pot them up.
