As all us South Africans know, Grey Bloem is a top sporting school and always produces a fantastic rugby team. But! One has to give Trinity some credit here. It was a competitive game and both sides are with new, young U16 players. Well done to both schools. One more thing, I don't think we can call Grey the top side in the country. This year all the top schools could beat each other. Paarl Gym beat Grey, Paarl Boys beat Paarl Gym, Rondebosch beat Paarl Boys (The souties from the southern suburbs are coming up) and Paul Roos beat Grey. So, it was a bit of a crazy year for SA Schools rugby.
I dont think guys overseas understand the typical all boys South African school. Especially a school like Grey. There is major hierarchy amongst the different years. You're treated like trash by the older guys and are like skivvys when you're young because you're considered nothing as you've contributed nothing, but as you get older you get more perks, privileges and respect as you are now representing the school on a higher stage. You're becoming the seniors and ambassadors as to what the school stands for. There is Major tradition. No ridiculous hairstyles or long hair. Utmost discipline and behaviour. When you're in school your school is your life. Its considered the end all and be all. It becomes a brotherhood and you must bleed for it. Die for it. It's not just some get together to play Rugby and have fun. No, it's a privilege and your duty to perform and Honour those before you by giving it your utmost. To make your mark and leave a legacy. That's the kind of boy you are when at an SA all boys school.
Keep in mind… Grey college play at altitude in Bloemfontein. You might get some points on them at your ground, but you’ll get smacked at theirs (because you won’t be able to breathe)
The advertising banners have the name " Chang" this is a Thailand premier beer. Chang is Thai for elephant. Makes sense once the commentator mentioned that it was being played in Thailand. Grey Bloem need a treat, a few nights visiting Pattaya.

It's great to watch the next generation of rugby players showcase their skills. Keeps the sport alive. What's less great is the xenophobic tribalism of football culture creeping into rugby, noticeably at youth level. This is not about being woke at all, it's about what rugby has always been the culture of good competition but global comaraderie. If parochialism is ones cup of tea then follow football or US sports.

I remember joining in on a touch rugby game in England whilst one of their best youth club teams were playing (ermmm - 18-20 yr old odd). I was about 35 by this stage, an old man. I am from SAfrica, and I was fit. I am no one special in the rugby game back home. But boy did I score, repeatedly against those guys. I was shocked then, and I remain puzzled by it now still. And I am not fast really, I played flank and 8th man. So, I am not surprised by Grey. What a fearsome reputation they had back home. Go boys.
Well what did they expect? We sampled this game with two from two wins in the Rugby World Cups. England lost both games to South Africa. That was a preview of this game. Not sure if anyone thought it would go any other way but it did not. As per usual.

The first XV have finished their season and are on holiday. Hence the reason this team aren’t playing with their traditional navy blue jerseys…not their first XV this.

Yes its a under 16 and 17 side and some kids missing due to other sport commitments. That's why they don't play in the first team jerseys. Some of these boys will play first team next year but some won't make it

Relax it's only a U16 school game. Yes without doubt the Boks are deserved concurrent rwcs. But that doesn't mean that no-one can compete with South African rugby Boks haven't beaten Ireland 2016. Pre rwc their win ratio was in the mid 50s. They have repeadly under performed at the rwc U20. They are out of European Champions competition again, currently running 4hh and fifth in the URC. I'm not suggesting that South Africa isn't a great ruhby country and current rwc champs but that doesn't mean no-one can can compete with them . Celebrate Greys win but let's not get overexcited.

Boks haven't beaten Ireland 2016. Pre rwc their win ratio was in the mid 50s.
They have repeadly under performed at the rwc U20.
They are out of European Champions competition again, currently running 4hh and fifth in the URC.
I'm not suggesting that South Africa isn't a great ruhby country and current rwc champs but that doesn't mean no-one can can compete with them .
