Thanks Mr. Bonevac! wonderful series on Augustine that you have. I'm following along. Yes our will, desires and emotions are disordered. We need Christ! Happily we slowly put ourselves in order over time through prayer and Mass and all the rest. Fundamentally I have to have faith that Christ will be there at my own extreme moment to carry me through to God. Indeed, my own powers will doubtless fail otherwise.

Being in a constant state of heightened awareness sounds like anxiety. Like many people I have experienced this. It was only when I went on a retreat to a Buddhist community that I learnt how to be absolutely still and silent. I found the practice extremely difficult to begin with. Thoughts kept on invading my mind and no amount of 'will' seemed to have any effect. The monks carefully explained that 'will' was the problem itself. Stop 'willing' and just simply follow the practice. My anxiety, that I had suffered from for years disappeared.
I'm not saying that Buddhism doesn't value self-awareness. It just takes a different path to self-understanding.

How does self-deception operate in knowing ourselves?
