Napoleon's Marshals: Saint-Cyr, Oudinot, Victor, Murat.

  • In 1804 Napoleon created 18 'Marshals of the Empire', to serve as the senior officers of the Grande Armée. He created a further 8 before his abdication. A few were aristocrats, but others were the sons of shopkeepers or tailors. The most favoured became princes and kings. Among their ranks were legendary figures such as Marshals Lannes, Soult, Davout and Massena, but also much less well know figures like Pérignon, Brune and Moncey. Our series will explore the lives of all 26 Marshals, and rank them according to our own judgement of their achievements as Marshals.

    20:14 From “La Grande Armee” by Georges Blond, translated by Marshall May (1997), page 429:
    “When Victor arrived, he was met by an avalanche of reproaches [by Napoleon]… [Victor answered]: ‘Sire, I have served you since Italy. You cannot banish me from the battlefield without dishonoring me. If I have committed a military fault, I have paid dearly for it in the wounding of my son-in-law [General Chataux]. ‘ ‘Is there any chance of saving him?’ ‘No’, and Victor started to cry, and in turn, the Emperor was moved. ‘I shall take up a musket,’ said Victor through his tears; he would join the ranks of the Guard. Napoleon held out his hand. “Well, Victor, you may stay. I cannot restore your corps, since I have given it to [General] Gerard, but I will give you two divisions of the Guard. And you will stay and dine with me.’”
    I love this exchange between Napoleon and Victor - even during the grim 1814 campaign both men displayed honor and compassion.

      Yes but that means very little. There is no Napoleon without Murat. Murat somehow got canons to napoleon during a revolution AND brought troops into parlament and used them to force a change. Murat was the guy who actually had the courage to change history. Napoleon will naturally hate him, because he reminds him of his own crimes, but he also has to keep him quiet and loyal so naturally he kept rewarding him and let him show up late at battles.
      Murat on the other hand would have trouble taking Napoleon seriously, having created him himself. He must have felt pretty untouchable being married to Napoleons sister and having a hand in Napoleons misdeeds, so its no wonder he ignored orders and showed up late for battles. He probably saw himself as better than Napoleon and Napoleon owing him endless gratitude.

    The sculpture of Murat is in front of the facade of the royal palace of Naples as one of the most important kings for the southern italian realm. I am happy he has not been officially forgotten. His proclamation for the italian unity, although instrumental, was of crucial importance for italian history. He is buried in a very humble tomb in a church in Pizzo Calabro, the town in Calabria region where he was executed. My favourite Napoleon's marshal. Ooorah Murat!

      @Xi Jinpooping The Pooh Well, the Bonapartes and other claimants to the french throne were banished from France by a law passed in 1880, meaning that Napoleon joined the foreign legion under a fake name and was in France illegally. On a similar note, also during World War 2, the heir to the Orleans branch of the Bourbons came back to France and declared his support for Petain and the Vicky regime, urging all french monarchists not to resist. He was also offered a position as a minister in the government of Petain but that didn't go anywhere.

He was permitted to speak, he refused to be seated (you can even see the chair in the artwork EH TV used), he refused the blindfold, and was accorded the right to direct his own firing squad. He was perfectly calm and composed, and even remarked "I have braved death too many times to fear it." His actual last words were also more in line with his vanity (probably the only thing that could match his bravery): "Soldiers, do your duty! Straight at the heart! But spare the face! Fire!"

    This is genuinely the best series I have ever watched. Truly amazing levels of detail and research and the production is top class. For people to put the work into content like this which is essentially free to the masses is inspiring. Much respect. Cannot wait for the next.

    This series is simply unparalleled. The research, the narration, the depictions, the music, the cohesive timeline so that you know what is happening and when... This and all documentaries of this channel are of ultra top quality. One could never follow all this easily by alternate means... only by a huge amount of studying. Congratulations to all from Epic History TV that have made this possible. And a Happy New Year!

    Damn those quotes. Seems like Napoleon loved to roast his marshals.

    • @Kamfrenchie
      @Kamfrenchie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems napoleonwas just very direct when he was displeased.He would both be rewarding to generals that did well, butnot hesitate to chew them up, though that doesn't mean he didn't like them. I mean, he made Murat a king, so some harsh words are not too much of a biggie i guess ^^

    • @ayoa1173
      @ayoa1173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Kamfrenchie For context, most of these quotes come from his time in exile where he largely came to view his closest subordinates in complete contempt. Notice how the most high profile marshals of the Napoleonic wars, Murat and Ney, had the most negative quotes. On speaking of Ney's execution, Napoleon said he got what he deserved.

      I wonder if that' all of his quote, or if he was jut contradicting himself depending on mood swings. Iknow that he said for example, that Marmont betrayed him, but i've been reading some other notes by those who were with him in St Helena, and at some point he says that in the end, he wasn't betrayed that much, just abandonned, even for Marmont. And that his luck could have been worse

    An interesting fact about Murat’s participation in the Russian campaign is that he developed a very good friendship with the Russian general Miloradovich. They got along so well that they organized small gatherings and even joint picnics with their men, during the small lull in the fighting following Napoleon’s entry to Moscow.
