I moved a couple of years ago to just the watch. The garmin forerunner works very well for it. If I needed a new true bike computer it would be hard to say but probably wahoo.

I have used both. Battery is a problem but if you charge nightly it’s not an issue. The garmin eco system offers more especially if you need a coach or training plan. Maybe someone can offer an alternative on the Apple Watch for a coach. I’m using strava to keep on top of training.

I just switched from the Apple Watch to the Garmin. The whole purpose of wearing a watch instead of a phone is to have it track your body, period and I think Garmin does a better job of that. Apple collects data in Apple health but it doesn’t do anything with the data or tell you your recovery, body battery, If your sleep was enough, if you should or should not exercise, etc. I’m not an athlete and I think health stats are useful even if I’m going to work or walking, having fever, not sleeping well, etc

I'm not a runner, I like to do cardio, walking, jogging, hiking, biking, etc, but mainly I lift weights at the gym. I was also a personal and athletic trainer. The Garmin Forerunner 255 is an absolute gem!! Body battery, training recovery, stress, HRV, etc., makes hitting the ideal training zone so easy.
If I only had this when I was training. The clipboard app where you can view and share workouts is an amazing tool for groups of friends or teams.

Im personally a Garmin guy because being a XC runner I need to run every day year round and really need data to tell what I need to improve on even without a coach on the off season. Also I would suggest Garmin to the normal person as well because the it has everything you realy need for $400 less than the Apple watch.

I am a runner and have always used Apple Watch up to recently. I have a series 3 and an older iPhone so it can’t be updated to IOS 9 unfortunately which has a lot more functions e.g. being able to program running workouts, intervals, efforts sessions etc. which is what I was missing and to buy a new phone and Apple Watch would be pretty expensive. I’m decided to get a Garmin so that I can do these extra things. I love my Apple Watch as a smartwatch and for recording other activities like strength training and Pilates but will use my Garmin for all my running workouts. I went for the basic Forerunner 45S which does everything I need running wise but didn’t break the bank. The data from Garmin imports to Apple Health app so I don’t need to wear the Garmin all the time so this way I get the best of both worlds and this works well for me. Maybe when I do eventually upgrade my Apple phone and watch I might find the newer one does everything I need but in the meantime I’m going ‘hybrid’ 😊

That video came just right perfect! I’m just in this moment wearing the Garmin Forerunner 245 Music in white on my left wrist and the Apple Watch 7 Starlight on my right (got these last month - first smartwatch in my life). On top, I ordered the Apple Watch 8 last week since I found it for the same price as I paid for my 7. Haven’t unpacked it yet tho. And I’m going back and forth these days and can pretty much relate to the arguments in this video. 🙏
Well, once I got my Apple Watch last month, I was in love at first sight, bought 2 other straps classy and sporty. I was impressed how it’s all working on my wrist basically.
But somehow I got drawn to a Garmin. I like the sporty style as well as the battery life. And I wanted to give it a try. And right know it’s hard to decide for one or the other.
Garmin is aesthetically more sporty, rather unconventional since almost everyone wears an Apple Watch but haven’t seen many with this Garmin. And I like the round shape better as a watch. From a functional point of view, the Garmin does everything I’d need in terms of sport (basic runner and swimmer and some hikes, quite similar as you mentioned :)). It gives you data insights, weather options, Spotify, notifications from my phone - but, I feel it is not that easily usable and a bit confusing to find the “apps” I need quickly such as play the next song or find my phone, click click click back and forth. Not as intuitive as the Apple Watch which is very easy and easier for me with the touchscreen to get quick responses (play the next song, switch to Adidas running app and then to weather). The display resolution of Apple’s is higher since it is a mini smart phone, whereas Garmin appears rather analogue. It’s more a watch, like the G-Shocks (you remember? :)). You might probably get used to the clicks you’d need on the Garmin and get the orientation and which to set where on the watch or from the app.
Garmin is also known for its deep data insights but I don’t feel much need for this and moreover the dashboard seems overwhelming (in the app). And that’s the thing - most things you’ll end up checking with your phone and additional apps eventually. It appears that the Garmin watch is more like the hardware and the phone in addition the software, whereas the Apple watch I feel works more alone.
Summarized: Optically and battery life, going more sporty, and if old school is wanted (not living in a digital world all the time), I’d go with the Garmin. If for the easy usability whilst anyway being used to Apple, using fitness trackings and health apps, using the watch as a mirror of your phone and having a rather classy design and straps opportunities (go more fancy overall), I’d go with the Apple watch.
It’s very tough tho and I wish there was a mix of both available (that might probably be the Garmin Venu 2).
If I will stay with the Apple Watch, I might chose the 8 because of the temperature tracking over which the 7 doesn’t have.
Thanks a lot for this video :)

So there is a way of solving this problem as it solved mine. I wear an Apple Series 8 on one wrist and the Garmin in the other. I live in the Midwest so 5 months out of the year I wear long sleeves anyway. No one notices. Second, who cares if they do. You will go to Health in Apple and allow sharing for Garmin. I share everything except sleep, resting heart rate, walks and runs. Everything else is shared. Therefore, if you go somewhere and decide you don’t want to be seen wearing two watches I just turn off my Apple Watch put it in my pocket and go about using the Garmin because all that data will also go to Apple Health (like your wearing an Apple Watch). If I go for a walk, run or workout I wear both and then both obviously record the work out data separately since I had turned off the work out, walks and run data from sharing. Works perfect. I sleep in both since Apple has better sleep tracking. I get good sleep tracking from Apple and get my body battery from Garmin. I get the health metrics from Garmin and the productivity from Apple.

I had a FitBit way back when they first came out, but an AppleWatch is the only other smartwatch I’ve owned. It almost never automatically detects my outdoor rides, but that’s ok. I mostly have it to be an extension of the phone. Often my phone is in my bag, the watch lets me know if I have a text message or call from a family member.
One of the features I really like is the navigation feature that uses different buzzes to give me directions (turn left or right). It’s very handy when I’m riding, and also useful when I’m driving a car.

I find it very frustrating that Apple as a company refuses to work well with other companies or adhere to standard protocols. Apple doesn't allow 3rd parties to make calls through watches. It's not that Garmin couldn't make that feature, it's that Apple wouldn't allow them to make it. I like Apple Watches but find the 'walled garden' part super annoying. Don't get me started about data exporting. 🤦‍♂ Great video as always!

    Hi !
I’m in a middle of something there because it’s been 5 years that I wear an Apple Watch, but because the world of connected Watch is becoming more and more popular, I’m wondering if à garmin could be it ..
I love data, I love health and how I can treat myself better.
The Apple Watch is a very good overall Watch, but apple is not providing a lot at all !
Like nothing at all, I’m the health app, you do have a lot but nothing is pushed forward like “you should rest a bit”
I need to download app for that ..
I’m curious about the garmin world, the battery life seems to be a dream come true, the health and data seems to be incredible. But the only thing that I do is a lot of cycling, walking, swimming sometimes and that’s it
I love the interaction of the Apple Watch, the WatchOS 10 version that was shown is the latest apple keynote is showing mental health and a tiny more in the health data area but nothing to crazy..

I’ve got a Garmin Instinct Solar.
I chose it because it records all the things, it really only needs charged once a week (typically charge it sitting at my desk working), and it doesn’t attach my eyes/focus to another device.
I thought about the Apple Watch but I didn’t want yet another reason to be looking at a device. I wanted simplicity & accuracy of GPS/Heartrate for recreational running/cycling. I didn’t need the features for training or whatever of the fenix (running gait analysis, etc). It’s rugged, no touch screen, minimalist. Exactly what I need in a watch. Smart but not tooooo smart.

I do have to charge it because I like having all the sensors going. You can, through watch or app, adjust settings to change your battery consumption. On a single charge depending on how many notifications I’m getting and how many trips I’m recording I think a good rule of thumb for me is 6-10 days between charges.
