    You didn't FAIL - you gave it a go and you tried. Nothing wrong with accomplishing 380k. Go you !!! Well done !!!

    I have to say, the time between 2am and 4am is a killer. I worked nights for a long time, your body wants to shut down, you get cold, it's hard to stay awake. Total respect for that massive effort. 380K!

    So proud of your effort Katie, you have my respect and you still gave it a good shot... you have done so many miles recently prior to this and your enthusiasm and love of cycling is contagious. A lovely video, and I’m sure you’ll do it next time. Well done lass :)

    Thats considerably more than I can do. It is not for want of trying either, I have seen your Strava. But you also need to know when to call it a day. The last thing you want is to be on the roads when you are feeling punchy. Its better to call it quits and try again when you are able. I am still inspired by you and, even though I am not able to go out as much, I am still tempted to build up my distances where I can. So keep doing what you are doing.

    I love the quote you used ‘sometimes you feel great, and other times you feel bad. But you won’t always feel these. ‘ you can use that a lot in life. You done well to go that far, kudos to you Kate. 👏🏻💙

    Well done Katie, the advice to only think as far as the next control is spot on! 600 kms is a very long way and its very easy to feel over whelmed. You made the right choice if you only had an hour in hand bouncing the time limit is not fun when you feel tired (I know from experience) if you feel like another go this year I can recommend Blackpool Glasgow Blackpool its hilly first 50km and last 50km but not too bad otherwise.

    Hardly a fail to cycle that far so chapeau Katie you should be really proud and an awesome video. Now for a bit of tough love. The last 200k is always going to be super hard , done on limited sleep and sometimes in the rain. You clearly have the physical attributes , I look forward to you conquering your mental ones as you deff could finish. You looked pretty fresh at the end and after1hr sleep you would have been fine. Good luck in your next endeavours I'm sure you will smash it. Ps don't choose a route that leaves you at your car 200k out as that's a mind f@cuk

  • @jonstacchio

    Very inspiring, as always Katie. My Strava buddy Sheila did manage to complete that same 600k event, but finished 9 minutes outside the allotted time, so it wasn't allowed. Can't imagine how that must have felt after cycling all that distance! Anyway, keep up the good work. You're a star and give us such a great insight in to the rather strange and wonderful world of Audaxing (if that's a word?).

  • @MarkSomebodies
    @MarkSomebodies 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Managing time is really important on any Audax, but more so on the longer ones, setting time limits for stops and sticking to them can help, along with using the stopwatch on your phone. Also eating on the bike can help reduce the number of stops, if you can using a food pouch on the bars for instant access. Hope that is of help.

    Well done Katie even at the start you didn’t sound like you wanted to do it yet you made it that far! I’m pretty sure you will do a 600km audax again and tick it off no problem 👍 I attempted an everesting challenge last year and started at 5.00am and expected to be done by 10pm but by 9pm I was only half way and wasn’t mentally prepared for that amount of extra riding time. I felt fine but in the end talked myself out of finishing it 🙈 still gutted till this day that I stopped. I will finish off what I started one day and I will be in the right frame of mind for it. I look forward to seeing the next 600km audax 👍

    I like the East & West Coast 600 because I'm lazy and it's one of the easiest rides on the Audax calendar. Personally I find the return section from Castleford to Mytholmroyd seems to go on forever, probably because the first leg (Mytholmroyd to Castleford) flies by so quickly.
    Although I skipped this year's edition there's every chance you'll see me on this ride in 2019....

    Tips.. training is a must! We were tracking our training progress via strava (no manual uploads) for accurate analysis of everyone, "numbers never lie"... planning is a good thing as well such as target hrs, what speed pacing, how many rest stop, planning about what the weather will be on the big day, educate your self about how you gonna do it... for us the weather was to hot! 38c max temp, but we planned what to do.. keep drinking every 15mins to keep hydrated kept eating the whole ride such as strawberry, power bars, sandwiches..( buy subway sandwiches and cut in 1 inch pcs and store in zip locks for easy picking up) if you have a group to go be honest with them and with your self, if have a early sign of cramping notify the lead guy, don't even try to go to front it's better to stay in drafts until you recover. Always ask the team members if they are ok if you need to rest have a rest but try not to rest more than 15mins otherwise the muscles might start to get stiff..try no to say any negative about the difficulties of the ride might affect the rest of the team. Everyone will know if someone is having a problem anyways... I personally trained for 6 months, 8-11 times a week and well worth it... hope this help..

    When you gave the update around 280km as evening was setting in I thought to myself that you looked as though your enthusiasm had been sapped. Do you feel that you weren't as excited about this ride as you have been about others? Personally, I think enthusiasm plays a big part in a ride. I for one, take a lot of forced rides for workout purposes.

    I wish I had your problem. Where I live it's nearly 44C today with 0-5% humidity. Riding for any length of time during the day is potentially deadly since your sweat evaporates off you the second you produce it... easy recipe for a heat stroke no matter how much you drink. :-/

    BTW leaving you some word wrote by Mike Hall for his TCR race manual
    "“Never scratch at night” is good advice from accomplished endurance racers. That is to say always wait until morning to make any big decisions, things have a habit of looking a lot better after a night’s sleep and food. That advice has saved many a successful race campaign."

      Ahhh don't feel like crap, you will have learned so much from it. Look at my attempt at the 600km, it was brutal. But I did it this year. You just learn and train and go back stronger. Don't beat yourself up, it's just a bike ride! xx

  • @andrew097
    @andrew097 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I,m a little like you a Audax newbie, I did a 600 last year and you learn how to do them. As for sleep you will be surpprised how refreshed you can feel on a small amount. I also find getting your logistics right and being very displined on breaks really important. It is easy to lose a lot of time needlessly.
    So the big question have you signed for the PBP2019 ? With a 400 and 300 in the bag 2018 you should have no problem getting a slot.

    This is more like a 380km success than a 600km fail. Is that your second longest ever ride? For longer audaxes I'm trying to get in the mindset that anything above 150km is a damn useful training session:) I completed my first ever 600 around 3 weeks ago. There were so many points were I nearly quit, and perhaps got 45mins sleep on a bus stop in the middle of nowhere in the Bavarian countryside. The closest I came to calling it a day was around 150km to go which on one side sounds so close...but it's still 150km!! Saddle issues (won't forget to bring the chamois cream again in a while!), numb fingers and the brain saying "do I really want this? this is stupid" were little demons to overcome. My first scratch was also this year, calling it in heat / hayfever conditions at the 200km mark on a 300er. I always thought it would hurt to quit...but I was delighted with my decision. I think you made the right choice, more opportunities will come if you want to try again. I'm still not even sure I want to do another 600, but I most likely will.

    You’ve done great. Most people can only dream of the distances you are covering. When cycling ceases to be enjoyable, that is too much in my opinion.

    It's better to fail at something you love. Next time you'll do better and some time you'll beat it. Well done, you did a tremendous effort.

    That was not a fail. That was a 300km ride that me as well as the other 99.999% of the population of the UK didn't even try to do. But maybe now you'll listen to me when you ask what you should be taking with you and my reply is spoke-related hehe. Seriously though, well done for the attempt. I wish I were able to do that myself but my anxiety would never let me do that alone.

    Nicely done. No matter the ks. My top mileage was 180k and I was done. So HURRAY FOR K.K.
