You're literally the only video I've found that has managed to succinctly and accurately explain the very basic bloody question "what makes coffee taste good or bad". It's important to me, because I don't drink coffee, but I would like to make nice coffee for my guests.

I'm glad you are thinking of your guests! Added plus, if they comment on the "great coffee" you can share some "expertise" ! Enjoy 😊 (I love coffee, and my thought also was to make good coffee for others, it's such a warm way to get together, and connect)

Omg, I think you've done it! I've been buying a ton of coffee makers over the years as well trying to get the flavor to come out right. I always noticed that at my mom's house the coffee comes out better tasting and they never clean their machine, but they have a bigger machine than I do. I've used bottled water and filtered water and cleaned my 5 cup coffee maker but with only minor success of making it come out tasting better. I've even had a water test done on my house and resorted to cleaning out my coffee maker with each use lol. I tried going to making the coffee from scratch with grinding beans and heating up water etc. Also with minor success and decided it was not worth the extra work lol. After watching this, come to find out the coffee maker was not only not completely covering all the coffee grinds but It's also not reaching high enough temps. so now I'm back to heating water manually and it's tasting great now. Thanks so much. I get to get rid of the coffee maker graveyard. I figured it was the plastic I was tasting lol. Was about to spend hundreds on something with a metal tank.

This is a very good video done in a calm informative manner that is easy to watch. I've followed the advice of this and other channels about improving your coffee with a cheap machine. Lessons learned have improved my Mr Coffee/Folgers by leaps and bounds so those who don't want it to be their main hobby and who haven't developed those taste desires to the level of an expert the simple things taught: temperature, amounts used, how the water drains through the filter and not letting the coffee cook for hours can really help coffee enjoyment. Coffee is no longer bitter so I don't have to gag down really bad coffee just for a caffiene boost so a bit of research has helped me avoid spending hundreds of dollars and spending hundreds of hours learning to be a coffee expert. And all it takes is a 5 minute video. Thanks Peter Tardigrade.

I came here because my brewed coffee at home has always tasted like it came from a sewer. It was always bitter, sour, too strong and just gross -no matter what I did. I had given up hope of a good at home brew.
Then I realized through watching this-1. I’m always broke so my machine isn’t very good (I didn’t think it mattered) and 2. Of course a $15 piece of plastic won’t brew like a machine made of metal. It does the pathetic squirt even though it does have a rain shower style head, it comes out in spurts.
SO! Determined to stop going broke by giving baristas all my money, I looked up on TH-cam thinking it was a ratio of coffee to water problem! Saw several videos that were trying to make me do *MATH* 🧮 and you might as well tell me to put roller-skates on a chicken. Every where I looked it was some ratio of grams/ounces/spoons-- I’m not measuring or adding or multiplying when I haven’t EVEN HAD MY DANG COFFEE!
Then my aching head (from lack of caffeine) stumbled on this BLESSING of a video. It’s not my machine, it’s MY DUMB ASS!!! 🦍 And how the hell did he know how much I weighed?!! Besides that! I was about to take out a loan against a future child to buy a Nespresso machine (because EASY AND NO MATH). I still might, BUT!, this has saved me in the meantime! I already always clean my pot and the basket in the dishwasher because screw hand cleaning. I always use bottled water because for being broke I’m boujie that way. BUT OF COURSE there are FUNDAMENTAL things wrong with a $15 machine!!!
I did the 3rd step and PRE BREWED MY WATER!!!! And was like uhhh this seems crazy when I’m in desperate need of caffeine. BUT I’m in desperate need to enjoy the mechanism by which I get that sweet kick in my ass too! So I patiently waited less than 5 min which is hard for me. THEN I POURED THAT HOT BOTTLED WATER RIGHT BACK IN!!! Next?!!! I took a chance on my death trap of a coffeemaker NOT boiling me alive, and I opened up that very angry lid despite how much spitting and hissing 🐍 it was giving me! Guess what?? It only burned a little. Like bacon 🥓 grease. And I suffer for my bacon, why not for the sake of good coffee?
So I STIRRED THE 💩 OUT OF IT! And guess what, he’s right!!! It was all stuck together with only some grounds getting wet and most in a big dry clump underneath it!!! So I risked the health of the skin of my hand and reached in with a spoon and stirred it, and I could tell it needed a LOT of stirring!!!
I still didn’t think this pot of coffee held hope, UNTIL, I heard the sweet sizzle of the whole thing stopping its death rattle of a hissing fit. I didn’t do the last step with metal cuz I’m a girl and I don’t have random pieces of metal lying around.
I poured a little into my cup... and WHAT THE WHAT?!!! It didn’t suck!!! And then I added half n half (as is my way of things) and it was smooth perfection, not bitter or sour!!! I added just a DASH of my fav sugar free vanilla and BOOM!!! I have the best cuppa ☕️ I’ve EVER MADE EVER AT HOME!!!
Want to know something more crazy??? I am a former barista!!! But they have machines. And fancy things. I have $15 from Walmart and a prayer 🙏.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalks.
    ❤️☕️❤️☕️❤️☕️❤️☕️❤️☕️❤️☕️❤️

I have a 12 cup 900 watt cheapo Mr. Coffee maker. When I brew 4 cups which is really about 2 10 oz cups and use 2 tablespoons of coffee all the grounds get covered by the hot water and the coffee comes out tasting pretty good. Thanks for that important tip of using a higher wattage model because I was thinking of downgrading to a smaller lower wattage cheap coffee maker.

Water temperature, grind size, NO PLASTIC and time on the bean. These are the important parameters. Thanks for addressing most of these. Plastic bodied coffee makers are still a concern. Glass and steel are better. See, for example Chemex.
Kruve has a range of sifters to control the grind size, better than your grinder can achieve, at the price of some waste.

I happen to be that new gorrila 😂
I've been using the tips you've mentioned like making coffee in a high security lab.
The thing is I've developed this taste of having coffee in all milk and no water.
How to extract coffee in milk with no water as solvent? I can't use my drip machine for the same!

My take away from this was just use a blessed kettle and have pour over. It'd end up being less faff

My coffee maker makes coffee taste bitter or too strong and my moms is really good and I can’t figure out why. I have a mr coffee 5 cup I’ve adjusted everything from the amount of water and coffee to the filters I’d use and tried the same coffee I use in her machine and hers taste better. I’m angry and I have to take it back because it’s gross and I like my coffee to be sweet. I’ve changed the amount of water and it taste too watered down, I tried putting more coffee and it’s gross. I changed the water temps and kind like faucet vs spring, cold vs room temp. Everything is gross.

It doesn't but it seems people turn it into an unnecessary complicated ordeal.

It's one of those things that's simple and straightforward, but people center their whole personality around overcomplicating it. Like jeans, pickup trucks, and cast iron pans

I mean, we can argue the same things about the food we eat, the cars we drive, and the beds we sleep on
