    If you don't have an oven try picking up an old Fermi GTX 480 and place it in the adjacent PCIe slot. Just make sure you monitor the temperatures when running FurMark, you don't want to over do it.

    I've done all this myself back in 2010 on 9800gtx+ TWO times after overclock. The 1st time there were some weard lines in POST and video not recognized in win7, the 2nd time the video was numb dead. Both times i preheated the oven at ~195 degrees Celsius while it was closed, opened it and put in the stripped videocard just like he prepared it on the tray with aluminium balls, and closed it fast so it doesn't drop the temp. And after 8min very gently got it out and put it on the side for 30-40min to cool down to room temp. Reassembled it and it still works totally fine even today 6 years later.

    1. Remove all the stuff, that can be removed, from the card.
    2. Balance the card on small screws, which are screwed gently into the holes in the PCB.
    3. Heat up the oven to 210-220 degrees Celsius (~425 degrees Fahrenheit).
    4. Put the card into the oven on a piece of tinfoil (doesn't matter which side is up), for 12 minutes. DO NOT TAKE THE CARD OUT YET!
    5. Turn the oven off and GENTLY open the oven door, to let the card cool down, while it's still inside the oven, for 30 minutes.
    6. Take the card out and reassemble.
    7. Profit!
    I have successfully revived 7 out of 9 graphics cards that way. (I am assuming the two cards, which was still failing, had other issues than faulty solder). I've never seen one of my baked cards stop working. One of them ran for ~9 months before I sold it and I never heard any complaints from the guy and that was years ago :-)

      @BrutalGoerge 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Zaryab B Actually you're wrong. Intel cpu's have a much higher temperature ceiling in which they can still operate fine. Since at stock speeds they use far less power, and produce less heat, Intel cpu's are better for overclocking. Just because Intel say they can run at 80c, doesn't mean that's where they normally run at. Don't you love it when you're calling someone out for being wrong when in fact you are ;)

    So that toaster oven is not getting to the melting point of standard lead-free ROHS certified solder, which varies from 217 C to 230 C or more. So non of the BGA balls are melting and reforming connections, the solder is not liquid. Nvidia cards fail not because of the balls under the die package but because of how the silicon wafer is packaged to the substrate. You can often temporarily get a failed nvidia gpu up and running again by heating it to 190-200 C but it never is a permanent fix.

      Also the European union in 2006 started to ban led solder in consumer electronics.
      I am sure there are a bunch of more countries.
      So nvidia and other factories are now using led free solders to be able to sell it... and led free has even hgher melting point 270°c avaregaly
      led solder is also banned in the eu and lot other countries.

    • @Slot1Gamer
      @Slot1Gamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Stefan Behrendsen also no freaking flux doesn't help either. Look up Flip Chip GPU design, the reason the card worked is due to an issue with the die. Heating the gpu up to 150c would have worked.. That's why wrapping a towel and other stupid stuff like that worked for the xbox 360

    I just did this with my own graphics card and it worked. HD 7970 Direct CU II which had died a few months ago.
    I removed the shroud, fans, and heat sink.
    I then cleaned the dust, which there was a lot of, with an unused facial makeup brush and a balloon pump. Not ideal but did the job.
    Instead of an oven, I used a heat gun that you can buy from hardware stores. I had this one lying around.
    I started a foot out and tried to evenly heat the board as much as possible and slowly moved it closer.
    By the end, I was 5 to 10 cm away and could smell the silicon, so I stopped. This was about 5 minutes.
    I let it rest, reattached the shroud and etc, and plugged it in to the mobo.
    Working. I can now get back to gaming.
    Thanks Linus!

    Fun fact: I saw on How it's Made that the shiny side of aluminum foil comes from its final extrusion where 2 sheets are forced between two large rollers for efficiency. The point? It doesn't matter whether shiny side or matte side, they are both the same. I know a million people/bakers/grandmas will disagree but it is only a texture. It is just as reflective for heat on either side!

    • @areyouavinalaff
      @areyouavinalaff 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yeah the difference is so slight you'd never notice... practically immeasurable. the purpose of cooking with foil is to contain steam and juices which does avoid drying of food and prevent burning. shiny surface reflects light waves and heat radiation in a more orderly fashion while the duller side kinda scatters it but on the whole there's no real difference. hot is hot and it's gonna be hot either way. shiny and dull, they do the same thing just slightly differently. good post, Jake.

    • @namelessguy199
      @namelessguy199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically no, a shiny side will always reflect more heat than a mat side. But the difference is just so slightly that it will make no difference in baking

    • @LegendaryRyu
      @LegendaryRyu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to throw this out to this comment chain: "Heat" does not reflect. It radiates, convects, and conducts. IR/microwave light on the other hand does reflect. Avoid mixing the two terms. So depending on what you are cooking with, the effect of light reflection will or will not be a term to consider... but most likely not, especially in an oven.

So I tried this, with oven on 425 like advised, but now it's not powering on. No fans or nothing. It did melt on the one side by the fan but not really noticeable unless you look directly at it. Do I need to stick it in longer or maybe a higher temp to bring it back to life? Should I return it to Best Buy and see if they can fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx.

    You're supposed to bake the components at a lower temperature (around 125C) for 24 hours in order to remove all of the moisture the ICs have accumulated. This prevents the moisture from vaporizing during the reflow process and literally causing the ICs to explode. Also, the temperature profile you used wasn't hot enough and was for far too long. A typical reflow profile is 150C for 60s preheat, 165C for 120s soak, and 225C for 20s to reflow. You probably didn't melt all of the solder completely. While enough of it probably melted to fix some hairline cracks and temporarily restore the connection, it's likely to die again soon.

    I know this is REALLY old, but just a heads up on the aluminum foil. it makes zero difference whether you have the shiny or dull side facing out. studies have been done and both sides reflect exactly the same. the only reason one side is shiny is because that is the side that was against the roller during manufacturing. It does not add any reflectivity from a thermal aspect what so ever.

    I wonder how many people will fry their otherwise repairable equipment because Linus couldn't do his research...

    • @oledcrt
      @oledcrt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +BakedCookie I really don't think very many people would actually bother to have their card repaired properly; it just wouldn't be cost effective. They'd just go and buy a new one if it was out of warranty. This "fix" is basically free, and you might as well do it if you're going to trash the card anyway. Now I understand that if you had a fairly new MacBook that was just out of warranty, it would probably be pretty stupid to put it in the oven before looking into more legitimate repair options. But that's not what this is; it's a graphics card worth maybe a few hundred dollars that most people just aren't going to send off for repair. I understand the point Louis is trying to make, but I don't think Linus did quite as much damage with this video as Louis is making it out to be.

    • @echowatcher
      @echowatcher 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +oledcrt Louis's video was getting at the fact that the Linus crew is so popular and big yet they did not take time into researching the method and that it not only worked temporarily but also messed up a fixable component and that by uploading this video it will spread misinformation and create more dead components some of which are probably rather expensive. I can understand if it's a very outdated/inexpensive card why someone would just want to scrap it but if it's a $400 card it would probably be worth just getting repaired.

    • @christianh1743
      @christianh1743 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +oledcrt If you throw the card out anyways you could also just give it away to charities. These would fix the card and pass it on. Started happening after game crashed because the Radeon software locked my fans to 30% and they weren't spinning up at all during gaming. I swear they do this on purpose with newer drivers to knock out people's older cards and increase sales.

    This is only a temproary fix. The bonds inside the GPU that connect the die to the pins let go after the constant expanding and contracting due to heat. When subject to a higher temp like that in a toaster oven, it will disturb things enough to make them work temporilly. I have been replacing GPU's for years and when I first started I was reballing and replacing. Now I use a brand new chip after learning that this only temporarilly fixed the problem. The lead free solder used on modern boards has a metling point of 217C or 423F. Theres confirmation you are not actually reflowing the GPU in case there was any doubt. Comes in hand though for rescuing data from a failing laptop board when you dont want to pay for a repair but thats about it. Aside from this your channel has been great. you should let people know this is not a permanent fix though.

    As an electronics guy, I'd do two things differently:
    - Put screws with nuts in the PCB mounting holes, and use them as standoffs for baking. Why bother using loose foil balls? Nuts are better than balls in this case ;)
    - Don't touch a circuit board while the solder is liquid. The small hit at 13:06 may easily have moved a component.
    Instead, just turn the oven off and open the door when the baking is finished. This will also reduce thermal stress as it cools down more slowly.
