- Lisa Charpilloz Hanson heads the Oregon Department of Agriculture, which has the power to regulate groundwater pollution from farms in the Lower Umatilla Basin. But for 30 years, the state has hesitated to mandate change.

What the hell is she saying? She’s spinning. “Impactful”, “Diversity”, “Sustained”… she sure uses a lot of big words but no real solutions. It sounds like they’re protecting someone’s interest, not those citizens with contaminated water. “Socio-economic interests”… she nailed it as to why she’s not doing anything. Excellent reporting and questions… but don’t make excuses for her at the end. Wishy washy.
I'm only halfway through and I want to bail so badly for how much she doesn't actually say anything, answer any questions, and repeats herself. If I was Pat, I'd have called that out, given her one chance to fix it, and if she just repeats it again, leave, and make that the focus of the story instead.
When someone says, “That’s a great question,” I know immediately I am dealing with a spinner of half truths, misdirection, excuses and lies.
30 years of water quality failures in Oregon... How about some of the farmers cut down the amount of fertalizers and pesticides they put on their crops... and if their crops suceed all is good, but if their crops fail the state of Oregon pays them the equivilent of the loss of good crop harvests? The state could pay them to do test fields so they could see how much of a reduction in fertalizer still yielded good crop harvests. I really do think the state of Oregon could pay the farmers to raise tilth certified organic crops and the results would be better water quality for everyone.

Maybe focus on better / different ways of purification of the water in the water/waste water plants . Give people better water. Cleaner water from the plant. Clean up water in public water plants..
Without even watching, the dominant thing to help mitigate it is teaching these ranchers, farmers and homeowners more natural ways to fertilize, do pest control and care for their land, crops and animals. As for the other toxic pollution, reign in the damned military. Hanford upstream definitely doesn't help with the slow leak it's had since the 70s, but the Umatilla range as well as the storage of toxic waste around their properties certainly has a negative impact too. Now having watched it, this woman really just spent 14 minutes not answering anything, repeating her self, and wasting time. Dear god. She's a proper politician. Just sit there, beat around bush, never actually answer questions, and just spin over and over.
But it's called superfund. Sounds like super fun so it must be okay right? 😉

how about the state control the water thirsty crops that are unsustainable no one cares or does anything the same in all the western states, but the big issue is money AG generates billions and the states are all about money, and big AG, while residents are blamed for water shortages, when we use less then 7% of the water...its all about the money people, not about sustaining the environment and I come from a 5 generation farm family

My parents were both farmers. They believed in being good stewards of the land.

How many farms has Oregon shut down this year so far?? If you know your history, then you know whats coming next.. What a gd shame..
