Carroll is correct. Assault is assault-whether it’s by means of a fist or a pipe or a penis. We don’t call the first two “manual assault” or “plumbing assault”-we say assault and battery or assault with a deadly weapon. Assault involving, by means of, or using sex organs is a whole lot more accurate than “sexual assault.” Rape is a huge part of sexual fantasy, and I agree with her that the term overemphasizes the sexual and under-represents the violence.
