Great to see this service to the KX-1200, have one myself. Perhaps the best but most overlooked flagship cassette unit ever made. I like you used to work on all types brands for warranty and out of warranty, tape decks and domestic and professional audio from the 70's to the 2000's, sad to see almost no professionally trained people doing this work nowadays as it almost criminal to consign these top of the technology units to landfill especially when todays production is usually well short of the quality and specifications that these machines have. Those Capstan bush lengths are extraordinary compared to the run of the mill cassette decks that were manufactured back in the day, Yamaha only know quality! One trick that can also be used especially in this day and age of hard to find parts is lubricating the capstan motor bush, in another life when spares were easily found a replacement wasn't an issue but given the age of these units any thing to extend service life is worthwhile.
@@graemecarr4325 dear colleague (i used to do these in and out of warranty as well 😊) I totally agree with you and thank you for your kind words ! These Yamaha’s do not get the respect they deserve and it is such a shame that there are so few technicians left repairing these . The mech - electronic combo seems to be black magic to most . I am mostly making my videos to show people its not rocket science and a lot can be done with a few tools
@@cassettedeck-walkman-repair When I first got my KX-1200 ( second hand unit) I tested it by recording from a DDD CD, playing back the recorded tape and comparing with the CD I could not distinguish which was which, I have never found another Cassette deck where this could be done though I have not tried that on the Dragon deck. Absolutely will never sell this unit.
@@graemecarr4325 i feel the same way , but i am a yamaha fan 😉 i just wished they would have used the DD motor on the sankyo transport and the geared reel motor idler , that would have made it almost maintenance free
@@nicksower6064 they get small indentations from the flywheel , but you dont need to get replacements, you carefully and slowly take them off (leave the double sided tape back on the metal) clean them with iso alcohol, turn them around so you now have a straight clean side pointing to the flywheel and put them back
thanks a lot for your videos. I wish i can repair myself my cassette decks. But I'm afraid i can break some plastic parts because I'm clumsy with my big hands.
Hello sir, I hope you can shade a light in my Yamaha KX1200, it plays well on metal cassette ( typeIV) but not on a chrome or original prerecorded tape . my take is ,I have been investigating why its not playing on prerecorded tape, I noticed that metal tape with hole in the middle is the sensor for type IV , while Type II has none and doesn;t play. I tried a Tape type IV without hole in the center sensor hole , it won;t play either. Have you encountered these type of problem ?
I hardly ever replace pinchrollers, good clean is mostly enough Belts i source from various suppliers but the kx-1200 belts came from here www.electro-andijk.nl/index.php?option=com_virtuemart
Hi Rene, Definitely a different format of Video, I thought I was watching a Video from a different Creator so had to double check, It is better hearing you Narrate the Video well to me anyway and no offense meant, Still watchable just very different, Oh btw, I had an issue with my Yamaha KX-400 the other day, I was playing a couple of Tapes and the last one I played was Rick Astley, I turned the tape over manually instead of using the Auto-Reverse feature and when it finished playing Side B the Heads would continuously Engage and then Disengage and kept doing it until I turned the power Off, (Thought I’d been Rick-Rolled) 😂 I managed to remove the Cassette after Powering it Off at the right time, Any suggestions on what would cause that? i cant seem to find a pdf from the service manual ? i would have to look into the transport and see whats going on before giving any heads ups the silent treatment was just a fun little test , i am reverting back to my shatty old self shortly ;-)

You are absolutely correct ! I wondered how many people would notice 😉 It’s not an auto reverse deck so the flywheels should not be running opposite, I corrected it after I posted the video

Yamahas from that era, and the one right before it, looked so good.
they are awesome machines , the k-1000, k-1020 and this one are very hard to beat
Very nostalgic, I sold many KX-1200's at a&b Sound in Vancouver in the late eighties.
