I Discovered a 100% DUFF PROOF Way to Chip And It's Scary Good!

  • I set out to “Duff-Proof” my chipping - and I think I’ve found the way! With some very basic tweaks I was able to craft an easy way to chip that doesn’t require much practice (if at all).
    I’ve chipped maybe 100 times since then and haven't duffed one. I like my odds so far. Statistically speaking that’s a 100% Duff-Proof way to chip.

    Great tip Tom. I was having problems with that myself. I was playing the ball too far back, like Nickolas says. Using your method and moving the ball up works. Then use the clock for different distances. I'm coming off the single plain teachings, It's hard to switch after watching Bryson use the single plain. But your method works for me. I make better contact almost every swing. It's giving me confidence. Thank you. I gotta tell you Tom. I used to be a 4 handicap. When I was 50, I played in a Monday Qualifier for the seniors. I played so bad, I threw my clubs down and didn't pick them back up for almost 15 years. I am now 73 and I cannot remember how I used to hit the ball, but I used to be a long hitter. I would hit driver over 300. The only thing I could remember about my old swing was I used to take the club straight back and had an upright swing. After picking the clubs back up. I couldn't hit a ball to save my ass. Your method has really helped me get back in the swing of things, so to speak.Thank you Tom

    I have the opposite problem. I am 5'7", barrel chested, short arms. My irons are all 4 degrees flatter and I take .5" off of the overall length. The short game has never been my issue. For the longest time my issues were the long clubs. What got the long clubs working was watching Lee Trevino videos. He is built similarly. To get his arms to clear he always set up to everything very open in his stance. Everything else he instructed was the same fundamentals you have been explaining. In my older age, three back surgeries, etc, that opening of the stance is even more important due to all the hardware in my lower spine. Pre-load the left side, monitor the club face, left side starts the downswing, the same. It really is a slight modification is all. The latest mistake I fixed, the easiest one, was my grip. My right hand was way too strong. Now it is neutral or less. A buddy of mine detected that. I hit a few balls and what do you know, big improvement with solid contact.

      Michael did you notice a loss of distance going to 1/2 shorter length shafts? I believe I need to do that same thing!

    • @MichaelSisley-fw3xr
      @MichaelSisley-fw3xr 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@paulcox4273 Not anything to worry about. Because my dispersion tightened up (on the short grass much more) I could not really say yes or no. Consistency was what I wanted most. Also, I am totally over trying hero shots. I focus my course management on never messing with trouble. One particular par 4 is so tight, I hit 7 iron from the tee. Mentally, I say it is three to get on now. Why? Never a lost ball again. Two bunkers in front left and right guard a 15 yard opening to the green. Second shot is short of that, chip on, then one or two putts. Shorter clubs? I would not go back to "standard" length again. I have come down from 20 to 14 handicap via better course management and proper fit of my clubs. My strong points are chipping and putts. Become an outstanding lag putt guy. That is good for 4 strokes per round. I'm 65, so I play the senior tees. Just trying to have fun. Days of smashing long drives? Those days exist only in my dreams.

      @paulcox4273 - Seems as though @MichaelSisley-fw3xr has done an excellent job figuring things out to suit his physical attributes and issues. What grabbed my from your message was the statement that your "king hitting days are history". With your being just 58 years of age, unless you have serious health problem I would beg to differ. A significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      Forgive me if I've asked previously, but have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.
      And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner.
      You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

    Hey Tom,
    Thank you for the confirmation. I had trouble with a consistent chip shot as well. So I began experimenting with different techniques and I stumbled upon something similar, just keep the left arm straight. When I add my right hand and arm, it forms an arm triangle. I hold the triangle and swing from the shoulders and upper arms for a pendulum swing. It has helped my chipping a ton. Thanks for confirming the technique. Please continue with the great videos.

    I do something similar! I saw Scottie talk about "toe down" chipping. Where you stand super close to the ball and the heel of the club is off the ground slightly. I use it for crappy lies when I want to limit turf interaction. Super consistent! Now I just need to learn how to putt. Hahahaha

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Indeed, Aaron! It's a pro setup "cheat code" for difficult conditions such as deep/thick grass, thin lies, pine straw, etc. We address the ball with the club in a more vertical position so that the toe is pointing downward and the heel is off the ground. We can vary the extent of this based on the severity of the lie.
      Nice job! Now, get that flat stick figured out so you can get up and down and cash in on your chipping prowess!!

    I found my chipping improving by choking up on the handle and addressing the ball with heel of the club off the ground. This reduced the club to ground interaction and allows the bounce to work better for me.

      There are many individual nuances and personal preferences involved when it comes to chipping, Paul. We see it all the time on Tour as no two techniques appear to be the same. We need to figure out what works best and most reliably for us, and what I am demonstrating here is a way that I eliminated variables from my stroke to crisp up contact and deliver consistency.

      A similar effect as what I am demonstrating here, Paul. Toe-down is indeed a pro setup "cheat code" for difficult conditions such as deep/thick grass, thin lies, pine straw, etc.

    Great tips, as usual…I don’t wanna steal your thunder Tom…I watched a video by Lee Trevino that showed how to use different lofted clubs to chip when in close, as opposed to relying on the wedge…I regularly use my 6 and 8 irons when I’m within 20 yds of the green….your video tips pretty much mirror Trevino’s

    I had a similar problem w a similar solution. I suggest 2 additions to this video. 1. talk about distance control on the chip or pitch (I use the position of my non dominant arm in the backswing as a guide); and 2. talk about trajectory, such as getting it over a bunker (I move the ball up in my stance and use the bounce more). Thanks again for showing your vulnerability.

    I also have long torso and arms and to address the same problem you having I side-bend. What side bending the lumbar spine ) does is change the angle of the shoulders relative to the pelvis, raising the lead shoulder and lowering the trail one. Raising the lead shoulder keeps the lead arm straight.
    In a full swing side bend it is what causes the trail arm tuck the body and shift the force vector of the lead arm lever mass which pulls the club down the target line. Why should the impact posture for a chip be any different? With side bending and a slightly closed stance it become very easy to swing the club head down the target line with no wrist hinge chipping swing. Try it, you’ll like it.😊

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't disagree and have done that, but as you well know there are about as many individual nuances and personal preferences involved when it comes to chipping as there are golfers in the world. 😎 We see it all the time on Tour as no two techniques appear to be the same. We need to figure out what works best and most reliably for us, and what I am demonstrating here is a way that I eliminated variables from my stroke to crisp up contact and deliver consistency. It also has the added benefit of invoking the pro setup "cheat code" for difficult chip shot conditions such as deep/thick grass, thin lies, pine straw, etc. We address the ball with the club in a more vertical position so that the toe is pointing downward and the heel is off the ground, which has the effect of producing cleaner contact. We can vary the extent of this based on the severity of the lie.
      Thanks as always for your helpful thoughts and suggestions!

    That upper torso tilt! I was missing that after trying to rebuild my swing with the new golf technology after a 20 year hiatus from the game (went sailing).
    That tilt had led to much more consistent ball contact. But ad you demonstrate, one's chipping may require some adaptation, like a green side sand bunker, uphill and down hill lies, and the driver (especially adding a downward tilt to your back shoulder. And then there is the putting stance.
    So we all want one silver built solution. As you show some adaptation is required to the basic swing.
    Perhaps an episode that addresses the differences would be helpful:
    normal iron
    Up hill iron
    Down hill iron
    Greenside bunker flat, uphill. Downhill
    Fairway bunker
    100 yard in pitching
    Greenside chipping
    Putting
    And finally. The Driver
    Maybe too much? The idea us to let players know there are basic setups that one must tweak

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm very glad to learn of your improvement, David!
      With regard to that thin contact, consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 7) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of divot-less contact. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention.

    Another great tip from Tom... He has helped me so much with the other parts of my game that I am actually enjoying myself (most of the time) on the course. Where I have less fun is around the green. Having my drive get me to 10-30 yards from the green is useless if it takes me 2-3 chips to get on and ready to putt. Can't wait to try this... One question I had was around club choice... How far were your chips in this video? And what club were you using? Looked to be at least a 56 degree? That your typical club of choice for chipping?

      There has been quite a bit of dialogue in the Members' Forum of my online school on the topic of how to transport "Ranger Rick" to the golf course, Robert. We all experience that! All I can tell you is that it is part of the process, and as your practice performance becomes more and more consistent, then it's just a function of time in terms of when/how that will translate itself to the pressures and challenges of actual play. As confidence in your swing grows you should find more and more that you are playing "golf" instead of "golf swing" on the course, at which point your mechanical thoughts will be reduced to one or two at the most, and you will be nearly entirely focused on your target and not your swing. An excellent book that may help you with this is "Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game" by Dr. Gio Valiante. Another book that I like is "Play Your Best Golf Now" by Lynn Marriott & Pia Nilsson.

      What a thoughtful and meaningful reply this is. I think we all struggle with this. You think you have some shot down, since you've practiced it, and then it lets you down on the course - to your amazement and dismay. It's like, "why do I bother practicing this"?? It is in your head. Especially for us lower handicappers. You only get one try at it on the course - that's what's in your head. That's what's different in practice. So, you somehow must find the correct feel first, before making the shot. I do that with lots of practice swings on any finesse/feel shots. Once I think I have it with the practice swing, I then try to put that EXACT same swing on the shot that counts. Oh, and yes, keep your head down!!!!
      Thanks Tom - your tips are great. Real world and useful. I will check out your mini course you mentioned here as well.

The school is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Tom how far do you go back before you lift the club

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don't independently lift the club, Billy. It simply elevates in response to the motion and preservation of the upper arm connection points.
      In other words, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.

    Can I ask. Do u put the ball in the middle of your stance for all irons?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We first need to be aware that camera angles can greatly skew the viewer's perspective on ball position. That aside, while this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. (By the way, I strongly suggest using alignment sticks when monitoring ball position - one on the foot line, a second one parallel to the first to mark the target line, and a third perpendicular to these to show ball position - as our side-on view from above tends to skew our perspective of the actual location of the ball relative to our stance.)
      As for hand position, it remains consistent - even with the inside of your lead thigh - no matter which club you are hitting. Additionally, the lead arm and club shaft should form a straight line from the face-on view, giving your setup a lowercase "y" look.
      Would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? I appreciate that, David, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!
      I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally liked the feel as well as how they helped to keep my hands quiet through the zone.
      Now, having said that, I purchased a new set of PXG's in the spring of 2023, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently.
      The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.
      Thanks again for your message and support!
