nice job on beating the first boss! as a side note when he extends his sword and spins it grapple onto him to avoid getting hit and be able to do some damage.
@@TheLegendaryEddy Aggression is key. But you also need to know when it's crucial to parry. That's what makes it tough, you can't beat the bosses without learning their movesets. Typically it goes between ebb and flow, at least when you master the fights. But the first run is sort of a mess, it certainly was for me. Dodging is only gonna carry you against specific attacks, to the point where you might even wanna discard it completely, in favor of parrying. Holding the dodge button to run can be very useful though. And even if you discard dodge from your general mindset, you still need to Mikiri thrusts. The difference between thrusts and sweeps is in the details of their movesets, very hard to distinguish on the first run. I definitely remember freezing up whenever the sign popped, like I saw you describe in another response.
Great video. I like people suffering and learning the game just like I did. As many have mentioned parry everything and use your money to get about a 100 spirit emblems in the early game where it's cheap, so that you don't have to break the bank in the late game.
@@TheLegendaryEddy yeah they do get exponentially expensive. You don't need much currency in the early game and you will most likely lose them if you die unless of course you have them in coin purses.
that bar at the bottom after parrying is your posture meter. when it builds up too much your posture is broken and you'll take hits. when it gets too high put some distance between him and hold block to lower it quickly.
@@TheLegendaryEddy yeah it only reduces it when you hold it down and they're not swinging at you. kind of like regaining your composure. also if you press the parry button as they swing at you it'll deflect the attack and also damage their posture. but holding block down all the time as they land hits will damage your posture.
I feel your pain man haha I started playing sekiro last week and while I’ve progressed halfway through the game I still find myself sometimes dodging instead of parrying, and even tho I KNOW to parry that muscle memory of dodging is just there😭 also the sweep attack catches me off guard so much as well

Speedrunners know how to get by without entering that tent. There's a specific running pattern you must do, or something like that. But it's definitely not the dev intended way.
Take everything you know and learned about dark souls combat and throw it out the window. Don’t move around and dodge too much, it’s usually a waste of time. Deflect deflect deflect. Jump low sweeping sword swipes , learn mikiri counter asap to counter and punish thrust attacks. Be aggressive when not deflecting attacks. You want to get the fights over as quickly as possible to minimize your chance of dying so aggression is key.
I feel what you are saying, my instincts are still to have my finger on the dodge button instead of deflect. Having trouble distinguishing between sweeping and thrust attacks as well. Thank you for the tips legend!
The classic trope of literally every single from software player is blaming the game before you get good. I’ve done it on both elden ring and sekiro. But at 11:20, as someone who has plat trophied the game and can pretty much one shot him, you’re right horse man is an awkward fight.
A big thing to do is pay as much attention to how the opponent moves as possible. When you get used to it the tells on what they're going to do is very clear for the most part. Such as for a thrust attack you'll tend to see the blade pointed towards you whereas for a sweep it will be pointed to the side. Also try not to lean on the prosthetic tools too much, especially when you're getting used to the combat. The focus should really be on getting deflecting down, it's the core of the combat. Get in their face and try not to dodge if you can help it, if an attack doesn't get the symbol pop up it can be deflected. The prosthetic tools are kind of useless a lot of the time apart from a few specific circumstances. And even then, it's pretty much only the shuriken, umbrella and firecrackers that reliably help.
Wow these are some awesome pointers. Here I was thinking prosthetic tools were going to be vital since they have their own skill tree and everything. You sir are indeed a legend.
Without going into spoilers, there are only two bosses where I found a prosthetic tool to be absolutely necessary. One mid game fight and one optional late game. But even then you don't need it to win those fights.
@@TheLegendaryEddy Even sweeps and thrusts can be parried. But that's a sort of hardmode, jumping and mikiri countering is the intended way to deal with them. I actually can't think of a single attack that can't be parried, but you will take damage from some of them. Reduced damage compared to eating the attack though. There are only 2 useful upgrades in the tools tree and they are only useful for optional content. So don't go pooring your Sen into that tree, that's a NG+ thing. Or at the very least a late game thing, assuming you wanna kill every miniboss and boss on the first run. Buy Sen bags every chance you get, so that you never run the risk of losing high amounts from deaths. Same with XP, if you're close to a new level it's worth it to go to a place of your choosing, where you can easily get a couple of stealth kills to finish the level bar. Or you might lose half the XP on the bar next death, trusting Unseen Aid is a losing deal.
If I had to choose only one prosthetic tool, I'd choose shuriken. I like to use it to keep pressure on the enemy. For example if the enemy does a grab attack, you can dodge backwards and shuriken+chasing slice. The firecrackers are really good against beast enemies, but otherwise it's kinda useless
Considering how far you've gotten, you're doing okay. But I'd invest 500 Sen on Robert's Firecrackers, at the top of the mountain between the first general and Chained Ogre. There is a grapple point that might require you to jump and look up at the right spot. It can also be bought at the vendor overlooking the Gyoubu arena. You are at a point now where it might be worth it to explore more of Hirata, for the prayer beads if nothing else. There is a lot of useful stuff there. Optional but totally worth it. Flame Vent is decent against red-eyed opponents like Chained Ogre, but that's about it. I have beaten this game 37 times, so I could go on but I don't wanna spoil anything. Just remember that hesitation is defeat.
Awesome yea my next plan was to go back to Hirata before moving to Ashina Castle. There is a ninja dude that I couldn’t kill so I have to get my revenge lol.
@@TheLegendaryEddy And if Hirata gets too rough, try the castle instead. Or even roads that lead away from the castle. The story will take you in those directions but some treasures might be worth getting asap. And regarding the sneak attacks being cheap, they're not. The game is hard enough as it is, so be creative and use them at every turn! They can only be used against minibosses and fodder anyway.
@@TheLegendaryEddy tip for that purple ninja: you can Mikiri his thrust kick. Or if you're a coward, get the loot he's guarding and run away. You don't have to fight him. But you aren't a coward, are you? 😉
Please stop trying to dodge. These enemies in the early games are there for you to hone your parrying skills. You gain nothing if you beat them by dodging. Every time you try to dodge, regardless of whether you succeed, is a wasted opportunity for which you could've pacticed parrying instead, regardless of whether that parry would've succeeded. Late-game enemies have attacks that are programmatically impossible to dodge, and long chain of attack combos that require a mastery of parrying. You will not get far if you don't get used to parrying very soon. 11:41 "How am I supposed to avoid any of this?" You don't. You parry. Every. Single. One of those attacks.
Most swordsmen can not be dodged. forget the souls reflex, the game wants you to guard and parry. dodge doesn't have any real I frames so its very situational in this game.
It’s easy to say but coming off of 5 souls games we’re all I do is dodge its taking sometime to change the reflex lol. But I will master this game you can put money on that
I honestly think this game is harder if you are used to dark souls vs if you just came into with never having tried them before but I have no data to show this. Also - I haven't heard the english voices before (my game defaults to Japanese with english subs) - kind of jarring.
That make so much sense be cause I have only been pressing B alone to try and Mikiri counter and it never worked. This will be definitely be a game changer. Thank you Legend 🫡
@@TheLegendaryEddy Actually no, you don't need to press forward. The Mikiri counter is activated if your character dashes torward the enemy.
