It will take time, and they will not be popular at times. The immigration issue is of grave concern here in the UK. Unlike the USA or Australia we are a tiny island there are housing shortages and an uncertain job market. Our govt. is spending millions to put a roof over the heads of migrants whilst British people are forced to pay for their bed and board whilst not having secure housing themselves.This is an issue that is bubbling away in the background
Britain gave all of her colonies their own democracy many years ago. So imposing peoples on other countries when the immigrants A. want the benefits of a first world country and B The countries do not want or need the costs involved with caring for homeless stateless traumatised people.
Its not an issue bubbling away in the background for all of us in the UK at all - fact is, under the Tories,, 97% of immigration in the last 5 years was people given Visas to come here and work. And the so called 'illegal immigration' makes up only 7% - it seems worse because the Tories were not processing their claims for asylum since 2021, thus causing the large numbers of them housed in hotels and other places while the poor souls wait to see if they can stay or not... That's what's outrageous....

You missed the news about docking the Winter fuel extra for pensioners unless they are are on pension credit. Many of them are too proud to go on it. Labour should have started on a positive note, not negative. Starmer has no idea of keeping the country happy. It's always the same with Labour. I've had 80 years of it!
Some pensioners being too 'proud' to claim Pension Credit is not a reason to keep paying winter fuel allowance to all - that 'all' includes many wealthy pensioners who no more need the Allowance than, say, the King would. Those pensioners will have to get over themselves and claim Pension Credit, it is a nonsense that they don't. And I speak as a pensioner who does claim Pension Credit....there is no shame in admitting you need help.
Problem being tackled from wrong angle. If energy companies were taxed more fairly then people wouldn't need these government subsidies. A Shell spokesperson even declared they should pay more in tax!
The winter fuel allowance was taken away from people who weren’t on pension credit which covers the allowance up to £12,500. Unfortunately people in the range up to £19,000 pension are not well off and will suffer. Labours own risk assessment figures say 4000 pensioners will die as a result of this state sponsored neglect. Only 20% of the U.K. population voted Labour in because of low turnout. They did vote out the Conservatives though.
