It's a good idea. I think if you were to drill a 9/16" hole in the inside bend of the angle and slide the rod through the hole an inch and a half to two inches then weld it would work very well. I would also have the angle upside-down compared to what you have now would be a little easier on the hands after 10-12 holes. Then take the biggest, 9/16" nut you can find and slide it half way on the 1/2" rod and fill the rest with a nice hot weld would work great. Just something you could try if that doesn't work.
Last year I used the HD Berkshires with great success. This year even with a pilot hole like you're doing I am bending the point on the and only getting them driven about halfway to the point I can pull them right out. In some of those spots I just buried a drag under my trap and it's working but thinking of going to super stakes on chain for next season if not by the end of this season
@toddstrohecker I haven't, I have thought about it and I have a dozen wolf fangs a friend gave me I just haven't bought a driver to try them yet. I haven't bought anything else yet as I'm weighing options and asking around to see what others have had luck with. Just crazy that last year the HD Berkshires were awesome and not a single issue this year has been the opposite
I straighten them in a vice using plyers and reuse them up to 3 times. Just make sure you check the loop the cable attaches to as it will crack out and fail.
I’ve used duck bills since I started trapping because they were cheap but the last few years I’ve been switching over to wolf fang because most the drivers for duck bill and Berkshire are just like a nail and my ground is hard so I struggle taking the driver out but the wolf fang driver I smack it on the edge and it pops right out I’ve probably ruined 3 of the Berkshire drivers by bending them
Half inch rope clamp works great. I have a half and five eighth smooth rod with a clamp. Five eighth is my pre drill and hole drill. Thanks !

Did you try the standard Berkshires?
