Located in an isolated mountain area, about 36 Km west (by car) of Târgu Jiu, the Tismana Monastery is considered to have been founded by St. Nicodimus (from Tismana) and consecrated in 1377 under the patronage of "The Dormition of the Mother of God". In a more romanticized narrative, but mentioned in many tourist and religious guides, Nicodimus (born in the south of Serbia, but somehow of Vlach origin, possibly Aromanian), after a period of great achievements on Mount Athos, leaves accompanied by a group of disciples and they from south-Danube, to find the place to build a church according to a divine vision. The place is found here at Tismana and he raised a first church of yew (tisa) wood (hence, probably, the name of Tismana). On its foundations, with the support of the rulers from the Basarab family, namely Radu I (1377-1383, he being the son of the ruler Nicolae Alexandru), he built the current stone church, the works being continued with the support of his sons, Dan I and Mircea the Elder. In a historical key, it should be remembered that Nicolae Alexandru, during his reign (1343-1364) established in 1359 the Metropolis of "Hungrovlachia" (of Wallachia), subordinate to the (orthodox) Patriarchate of Constantinople, by bringing Iachint, the last metropolitan of the Vicina. Iachint, in support of his work, brings (Saint) Nicodim from Mount Athos who will prove himself very worthy by founding several monastic settlements in Wallachia: Vodița (1369), Tismana (1377), Gura Motrului, Vișina, Topolnița and Aninoasa, and in Haţeg Land, the Prislop Monastery (at the end of the 14th century). The Tismana Monastery is considered to be the oldest monastery with kinovial life (communal life in which the monks put everything in common and do everything in common) in Wallachia. Through the donations received, it became very rich, also having a status of independence, somewhat similar to Mount Athos. Through its position, it had a leading role in the defense of the Orthodox faith (in other words, a shield against the penetration of Catholicism), and through its fortifications it was also a place of refuge for great personalities of the time: Neagoe Basarab, Matei Basarab, Tudor Vladimirescu. Over the centuries, the monastery has gone through great devastation and restoration. It should be remembered that the neighboring cave, of St. Nicodimus, sheltered Romania's treasure in the difficult years 1944-1947, now the cave is set up as a museum of this special event. From 1949, the monastery became a nunnery.
Details regarding the construction of the monastery, the painting, the holy relics, you will find in the video by activating the subtitles.
