Thanks much for letting me ride with you,as that has been a good part of my life for many years.I've been retired now for 2 yrs.I'd like to share a bit of one of the jobs I did for awhile. Wow that brings me back about 40 yrs.,I sure miss the sound of a good running Detroit 71 series.It's coincidental that I used to haul shell corn from Plattsburgh NY to Newport Vermont.I drove our 1973 Diamond Reo conventional with a 350 Cummins/with a jake and a 15 speed .It was quite mountainous and bad roadsup there in November.My truck caught on fire one time, coming out of the field,but it wasn't too serious.A battery cable chafed on the rightside fuel tank and burned a hole in it,shooting out flames up over the top of the cab! It happened up by the farm house,and the owner was a fireman,luckily, who came running out yelling "your on fire!".He had a huge CO2 extinguisher and had it out in no time.We recharged it for him later that week,and thanked him.He was a guy I went to high school with .The only other problem was coming off a mountain on rt 105 in Vermont with the jake on.I unexpectedly rolled onto a stretch of ice,and that of course made the traction wheels slip nearly jack knifing the rig! And the usual getting stuck around the farm yards.lol.. We also had a1972 Diamond Reo With the same engine you have with N70 injectors turning 2400 rpm's.It had a 13 speed ,4.44 rears on 22 inch nylon tube type tires.It pulled good and could do 82 mph.It was an experience drivng it.I miss it but will have to watch you and others on here now.Sorry I tried to make it short,but hearing that ol' Detroit wound me up. I love that 8v71 sound, and the country scenery brings fond memories. Why was I so unlucky?- the Titan and the General I hauled potatoes and grain with each had only a 350 Cummins. But the 6-71s and 6v53s have my ears still ringing. Thank you.
Excellent video. This truck sounds amazing and the fact that it has no re-gen, dpf filter, or def tank just shows that trucks ran perfectly fine for years without that crap being put on there. Keep on trucking brother.

There are no 2-stroke Detroit Diesels in western Newfoundland...the last time I heard one there was many years ago (I can't remember the exact year, probably mid-2000s).
Love the sound of the Detroits. Learned to drive in a 68 GMC 9500 long hood with a turned up 8-71 and 13 speed. First truck I drove for work was an International M series with a 6-71 and twin 4 speeds. Great old trucks.

Every military Detroit is DDEC. They have just as many electronics as a civilian version would. The LHS M1120A4 refit to CAT motors adds even more crap to go wrong. It is substantially quieter though, which can make a difference on the battlefield.

53 and 71 are the series of engines the first number is the number of cylinders, v is for a v style engine, 6v71 or 671, t is for turbo, grew up with them screamin 2 strokes, too bad my son might have to go to a museum too see one

For those of us that enjoy the wailing of the Detroit, would someone please do a video on the layout of the shift pattern. Gas powered cars usually go left to right, but it sure seems these old trucks go back to the left after some gear and you work your across the cab again. Is it the two speed rear end of the truck, or some magic hidden inside the transmission? An inquiring mind wants to know.

when movies are made in Hollywood and T.V. shows and a semi truck is in the scene they always use a rig with a Detroit diesel because that sound is awesome and is what most people associate with big trucks even if they don't know any thing about trucks even little kids know that Detroit sound the movie people will dub that Detroit sound in the film though they are running a cummins or cat that Detroit sound is a drug and it is a sweet addiction

The birth of Detroit diesels. GM Said we need a diesel and needs to be powerful enough to put in landing crafts locomotives and over the road trucks busses and heavy equipment. Let's make them in all sizes and cylinders, they'll be painted green or red or yellow and put blowers and turbos on them. And they'll leak oil so you can tell if they have oil in them or not finally they'll be 2 stroke and loud enough to make the dead cover their ears

We're so spoiled now. A 318 Detroit only was putting out 860 ft/lbs of torque and making things happen. The Volvo I drive has 455 hp and 1850 ft/lbs and is nowhere near as musical as this stroker. Even the 8V71T was rated at 350 hp and 1030 ft/lbs of torque.
I really miss the old Semi trucks on the road. Let me know when you want to SELL it if of course if you still own it... Sounds like you're doing 65-70 when you're only going 20 mph
The 318 nomenclature is based on its HP rating. That's how they are called around here. Not by there displacement. Because a engines displacement is no measure of the work it will do, it's HP is. Just saying
Fighterofwars Didn't know really. I know a little about Detroits. I was in the Army from 84-88 and drove a HEMTT with a 8V92 and a Gama-Goat with a 353. The 8V71 was a very common semi engine. Out of curiosity, is a 8V92 more or less a bored out 8V71 or is a 8V92 a bigger block?
Fighterofwars I just Googled it. Actual dimensions from model to model vary but the 8V92 is a slightly bigger block, weighing in about 2400lbs est. while the 8V71 is around 2250 give or take. All Detroit's are heavy, a 353 is about 900lbs a 453T about 1250. a 6V53 is about 1600lbs
The gmc general was one of, if not the biggest piece of shit class 8 truck ever manufactured. There is a good reason gm hasn’t produced commercial trucks in ages. They were just cheap junk.

Interesting 10spd configuration. I'm used to the range valve being on the shifter. I'd love to have one of these trucks to drive around.
The shift pattern is standard 10 speed.
Only difference here is that the air switch is down on the side of the stick, instead of on top.

From the looks of it, it appears to be a R910 road ranger. There is no splitter on top of the gear lever.
I used to drive a k-100 cab over single axel Detroit 12 speed.1982. my ears are still ringing.

those are just holes where gauges could be added. All the factory gauges are still present.
