I lost count of how many times I watched this video. I really like it when you tell your story of how you got here as a maker.

Hi Sofia. When applying nail polish, you don't use a brush, only a tampon? Thank you.

Come stai? È perfetto! Please excuse my Italian, I’m just learning. I have naturally picked up a few words from my musical background, but I wanted to commend you Sofia!
    Have you flamed the back?

Tutto bene 😊 🇮🇹 the back is naturally flamed and it is a gorgeous piece of maple 🍁

thankyou for the vid. how do you deal with the oil that comes to the surface after a few days? or am I using to much? I only add several drops to my pad. Thanks for your time

      That is a great question!
I add a little bit of oil at the beginning.
A the latest stage of French polishing I don’t apply oil anymore and the cloth with get first white and then yellow! It is incredible. You are just taking back all the oil and so it will come on the surface in the future.
It is a skill that requires time as it is pretty easy to burn into the varnish!
If you are interested I shared all my method in this course:

Is that shellac? And mineral oil? Orlinseed? Do you mix jet dust into the varnish or no? Thank you for fastenating technique. Why is this better than applying by brush? Linseed and damar or what are you using?

Great questions! Is is my varnish diluted with alcohol. I like the velvet finishing French Polish gives to the instrument. It is very pleasing to see and touch

You are right! Doing it for 25 years makes it look easy 😊 but the soon you start learning the faster you will go to mastering it!!!

I am fascinated by the finishing technique. I've never heard of French polishing. I struggle a lot with putting a finish on the furniture I make. Sometimes I have ruined a piece by putting a terrible finish on it. I will look up your website and take a lesson. Thank you!

I am sure you will LOVE it. The class is called
Introduction to French Polish and I am teaching the technique on a piece of forniture!
It is a skill that will serve you forever as it is doing for me 😊

this is very educational. Do you do any Tripoli or Pumice Stone/ oil rubbing at all?

    • @violinmakingwithsofiavettori
      @violinmakingwithsofiavettori  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Good question! I was using Tripoli for a wile, then I stopped as it is cancerous 🙌

Hi! I'm watching your videos! I have a question. Is the one you applied by hand shellac? Is the one you applied by gluing varnish?

Have you decided whether you will use boxwood or ebony for the pegs, chin rest and tailpiece? My tailpiece on my antique violin has a mother of pearl flower inlay. It’s beautiful. My boxwood pegs have bobbles on the end of the pegs, unlike the ebony ones on my antique one, which are just rounded.
