I've been at the Adventure Overlanders show in Stratford upon Avon since Friday, so binge watching three episodes to catch up. Wonderful coverage of Arnhem. On tents, the Lone Rider really is a massively roomy tent, three of my riding buddies have them. Also the Vango Galaxy 300, it's light and it's HUGE... well worth looking at. Helmets, because of the amount of touring I do (most years!), I don't follow the general recommendation of eight year helmet life, I halve that and I also use the SHARP ratings to help select a helmet. I am on my second Caberg Duke, not expensive, but 5 star rated and mine is a nice snug fit. Oh and if I drop it, or fall off and whack my head / helmet on the ground, I bin the lid.
We dont fancy another Big tent, we want to keep trying to reduce the bulk of our kit as much as we can. I havent looked at the Caberg Helmets, Not a brand i know much about to be honest
@@ontheroadadventure Sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you were looking to replace like for like. Smaller, the choice is massive, but despite all the exotic names, available, I would look hard at the Vango range. I have a Scafell 300+ and because I bought it from Attwools the warranty was extended from two to three years! The Scafell wouldn't suit you, but the Vango range is vast.
So we've just got back it riding again. We pulled out our old helmets from 2008 🤔..had a good think about it and decided it was time to buy new. 16 years sat in the cupboard...I don't think so. They'll do for karting or something. But not for our new ride.
@ontheroadadventure Nolan X-552 Ultra - Puro N-Com. From Helmet city, West bay. They gave us a bit of discount as we bought two. But I think they've come down in price since. Loving your content guys. Even the Mrs keeps asking if you have new video out. So we both sit giggling together. We decided to visit the Highwayman on Friday but it was closed 😪. So headed to the beach for fish n chips. Stay safe guys.
haha We are glad you guys both love to watch us and have a giggle. Yes The highwayman is a bit odd in many ways, you need to check ahead and book if you want to eat there but it is well worth it, hope you get to go back there and see inside soon.
Hi, for camping in the UK, try the Vango Skye 4 man tent, it is 6 kilos, but you will be dry and warm, lots of cheap second hand ones on the market. It’s 160mm high, so no wriggling like a maggot to get into your biking gear, it’s got the black out sleeping area and you can cook in the living area. If I’m camping somewhere hot, I use the Vango banshee 300 with a tarp, you do wriggle like a maggot to get dressed, but it’s light, got two doors plus the tarp extends the living area with a Aldi groundsheet. Have fun
Usually after three years my helmets start to show a bit of wear and tear, so I swap. Always a mid range brand that fits my head like Nolan, Caberg, and currently Bell. Good quality and perfectly safe. I'd be less keen to swap if I'd spent £800 on one. Probably keep it till it fell to bits and nurse it around like a baby when I'm touring for fear of the odd scratch. Each to their own. 🤷♂️
We have to agree, the Mid range Lids seem best for quality and affordability, Some of them are so expensive now that replacing two helmets is the same money as going for a tour on the bikes!
I wear a Shoei Neotec2 with integrated intercom from Sena. For me the perfect helmet. With every other brand I got headaches. But thanks to the personal fitting from Shoei I don't suffer from that anymore. I have had this helmet for about 3 years now. I can recommend you to try it.
@@ontheroadadventure also my helmet last till the Viagra wears off lmao ,hey guys look at the LS 2 Helmets when you get back ,I run the m700 explorer helmet witch is phibre glass ,and Kevlar base .
We listen to far too much scare mongering when it comes replacing helmets. As long as it fits properly and hasn't been dropped I easily get five years without the need to replace. Everyone accepts a level of risk with biking, it seems many people are easily influenced from dubious sources. Glad you're enjoying the trip.
I think your probably right there, Most Helmet Manufactures actually offer a 3 or 5 year warranty, i have to say i dont think i have ever kept one that long but i do use mine on a daily basis so i tend to replace them when they get worn out or no longer fit well like this one
I keep my helmets 5-6 years before changing over been using v-can flip front for 10 years been good. If I dropped it I would replace it. You just don’t know if it’s damaged. Stay safe love the videos
Funnily enough, i always loose weight on tour as well. Even with all the food, ( cake!) and beer. Gym membership? Nah. Travel on your bike. The biketravel diet? Ride safe 👍
Those Sidi Adventure 2's are excellent but I wont wear then on the continent , air cooled Guzzi & 30 deg temps are a nightmare in them. Got some Falco Marshall's for that.
Hi both . Great stream yet again . I have just bought a new lid. My old lid is 15 years old and like yours it didn't fit correctly . The only lid that i could find that fitted my glasses was the top of the range HJC . Wow how comfy and nearly no wind noise .Its already moulded to take a coms system and its easily fitted . Great lid. Thanks for all of your hard work . Ride safe and have fun . 👍👍👍❤
@ontheroadadventure I like it. I was looking for an adventure style, and it fits my head. I think they make helmets for touratech, but don't quote me on that. It was quite expensive being carbon.
Super fun video, and to follow all your beautiful motorcycle🏍 camping🏕 adventures. In this last video you almost drove past my house😊 If I had known that, you could have stayed with us😉
My wife said I am banned from going in anymore bike shops! I have the shoei GT air3 which is a very comfortable helmet, the sena intercom fits very neatly in it but I dont know how well it would match with any other make intercom or how good the mic would be for TH-cam. I have tried it with a phone call and I'm told it sounds very clear.
That's the Knox vented jacket I've got. It's a god send on hot days. When we go touring I take armour out of my alpine star jacket and wear my know underneath for when it's a bit chilly. Looks good on you Ewa x
Nice when a change of plans leads to more adventures. 👍. I recently bought a shoei neotech 2. Perfect fitting. It replaced my caberg duke 2. I had that for four years of daily use. I realised the helmet EPS had started to degrade and become a looser fit from wear and tear , sweat and continual use does that to the polystyrene. So yes definitely worth changing helmets. Motolegends or Sportsbike shop do Shoei helmet fitting service i think.
We are fans of Sportsbike shop they do make everything so easy, but we usually buy our lids from our local bike shop, we try to support them as much as possible provided they price match
I’ve 3 helmets, an AGV full face, a Scorpion flip up and an off road style Shoei. The Shoei was dropped on the drive last year, but I found a company that can test them to see if they’re still good, and it was. I think others have said this but most companies don’t make that many shell sizes and changing the internal padding may help the fit. Although any excuse to buy a new helmet! I’m eyeing up my fourth at the moment 😊
As for the lowest point in the Netherlands (actually lowest polder) . It's approx. 6.7 metres under sea level. You were close by. You can see it from the A20 when traveling from Rotterdam to Gouda. Good luck next time.
What another great day you guys have had. I also love stopping at motorcycle shops to look at the gear. I'm actually due a new Jacket and Trousers any day now. Been wanting to lose a bit of weight before buying, but can't seem to do it. Camping food looks the tops as always. Got me salivating again. Stay safe guys.
We can both Recommend the Oxford Mondial Textile Gear, Good kit that. The List of things to buy when your a biker is never ending, but it always keeps you interested and wanting more
@@ontheroadadventure Thanks, I will certainly check it out. I always look at gear that's been recommended. I have had some fantastic looking gear over the years which has been absolutely useless, especially in the wet.
You should invest in good base layers. I have one for staying cool, odlo or something, and one for staying warm, merino wool. I also use a windbreaker between my jacket and my base layer when needed. My jacket and trousers are revit with leather and a lot of mesh which are zipped together. Ps: a lot of ch*mtrails, must be the Netherlands 😅
I've had Shoei helmets since 1974, they are the only Brand that really fits me. I currently have 2 snd swap between them. I've seen plenty of bike racers crash and tumble and carry on using the same helmet 😉 If my helmet was to go bouncing and tumbling down a road and show shell damage I'd bin it. A simple fall. NO WAY. Shoei sell a range of different thickness pads for helmet interiors so you can put in thicker ones.
Another great watch we both laughed out load at Ewa saying her squeeky boots didnt bother her. Looks like a nice dealership, i was really keen on seeing the ruler, crazy to think so much is below sea level.
Apparently i was wrong, its not 6ft 6 under water at the lowest part.... Its Over 6 Metres! We never figured out what happened to the giant ruler, you can see pics of it on google and google maps but we never found it
Windmills have been used for anything, it was proto-industrialization. Especially the invention of the wind saw mill in the late 1500s, it allowed the Dutch Republic to build ships 30 times faster and dominate the European trade, triggering the Anglo-Dutch wars later on. Water was always used defensively and offensively, Leiden was liberated by ships from the Spanish siege by flooding the area. In some places they could only manage a few centimeters of flooding but that was enough to get the Spanish tents wet and demoralize the siege troops. To capture Den Bosch they build a windmill to drain a part of land for the guns, rerouted a river to drown the city in it's own shit until diseases broke out and it surrendered. They used skating to move soldiers quickly in the winter baffling the Spanish. Louis XIV army was stopped by flooding large parts in the West and the North when the French attacked together with the English and German bishopries in what is called "the disaster year". Napoleon got lucky in with an exceptionally harsh winter, the Dutch couldn't keep up breaking the ice so his army could just march over.
I find this stuff fascinating and So ingenious, there really are some clever people in this world, ?Its all about using what you have to your advantage
You should try a modular helmet really good in the warm weather. Every small village town when you pass through you can lift it up helps cool you down. Watch out some are not rated designed to be ridden when up. I would ride with out one. Not going to tell you which one is best as you need to find the manufacturer that best fits your head. It's Shoei for me good luck
I think a lot of windmills are used to make flour. Perhaps you should have your helmet measured Ewa especially if you have a Square head.! Food really makes you happy Rich. Simple but nice. The Netherlands is mostly below sea level because they reclaimed the land from the sea.
Can't get over how lose your lid is. Changed my 6 year old Arai for a new Shark, but I didn’tget on with it, ended up getting another Arai, clearly I've got Arai shaped head. Let's hope a helmet manufacturer gives you some sponsorship as you guys tell it as it is. As always an excellent episode. 👍
Thanks so much, We see the Aria Tour x 5 looks amazing but at £700 each and we need two we won’t be buying those this time, Shark haven’t shown interest as a sponsor as of yet sadly. Glad to see Rich doing the cooking on the trangia for a change 👍 I think you will struggle to be off site by 11am 😂 p/s do you get gas for the trangia ok in Europe or did you take enough with you🤔
Oh Yes i get a go on the trangia every now and then! Yes We usually carry no more than 3 gas cans each last about a week, we can usually find a decathlon in Europe to buy more
We are usually up and awake by 8.30am but it just takes us so long to have coffee, shower and get packed up and gone! It always amazes us when everyone else seems to be up and gone by 8am!
On the issue of cost most of the larger outlets have 0% finance options on the level of outlay you are probably intending. Takes some of the initial pain away!
I've tried the full gambit of crash helmets over the years, with price not a consideration, and it would seem I have a Nolan shaped head. The last three have been Nolan despite wanting a change. The best crash helmet is the best fitting crash helmet. That made to measure seems like a good idea.
I have to agree, its not about which helmet you want but which one fits you best... I know im in no good place to talk right now but we will sort them ASAP
85% of the animal husbandry in the Netherlands is for export and of everything that the Dutch farmers produce 75% is for export and it is the second biggest agricultural exporter in the world, not bad for such a little country.
Schuberth c3 and now c3pro have been excellent just put a new lining in. Had them for 5yrs ish. Never found another manufacturer that fits straight on comfy .
Had a similar issue with losing weight. Changed from Shoei Neotec 2 to Arai Tour X4. Love the Arai but do think I’ll go back to a more conventional and flip face helmet like the Shoei again as the wind noise and pull from the peak is a bit of a nightmare on long tours. And I’d definitely replace a helmet if I dropped it from quite a height but falling from a chair or table, then I’d probably or unless it looked really damaged
A bit of useless knowledge: Much of Anglia around Norfolk is reclaimed fen lands made possible by Dutch ingenuity. The work was carried out in the 1600s. It is possible to see houses that are several feet above the land level due to the amount of water that has been drained away. The Dutch are still helping by dredging to protect the Norfolk Broads. The difference between the amount of land seen in old maps and present day ones is quite noticeable. Re losing weight and helmets not fitting properly: I have lost a lot of weight too and now my specs do not fit properly. 😳😳😳 Also I found it is not advisable to buy a hat and then have my hair cut. 😱😱😱😱 the hat fitted beautifully when I bought it but 2 hours later, after having my hair cut fell down over my eyes. So something to keep in mind when being fitted for a new helmet. 😂😂😂😂
FYI- I had the Shoei PFS done at Motolegends in Guildford, worth the outlay and they refunded the cost if you bought a helmet. It’s surprising how you think a helmet fits fine, the. You get it done professionally and it’s a world of difference.
Rich,Rich,Rich ! Helmets....if you have a 30 bob head,buy a 30 bob helmet ! Over the years ive tried all sorts of helmets,mostly crap,now arai n shoei only for me,bloody expensive tho.
I told you i was ashamed!! I should know better and they will both be replaced when we get back. Arai is too costly for us, The Tour X5 is about £700 Each!! We can do a tour for that and provide you all with a new season of videos
I went to motoledgends in guilford, they have a fitting room where they measure your head. Then at no extra charge they changed the pads to ensure the perfect fit. They also fitted the pinlock, comms system and set the comms up on my phone and bike. Fantastic service and a brilliant fit
@ 16.04 minutes you where +/- 4,5 mile from our home ,we could have made you a nice "boerenkool or zuurkool stampot " and maybe a night over sleeping room (+ closed backyard for the twins ) whole my youth livving -4 meter below NAP and up till now -3 Nap 🤗
Change my helmet when the lining looks a bit dog eared or loose , I've tried replacing the internal padding but gets loose again real quick .....probley around every 4-5 years I treat myself to new one , normally pay around the £300 to £400 mark and I've found the best fitting and most comfortable to be shark and the most uncomfortable to be arai .
Ive always liked the Shark ones too, Not sure what we will go for this time, we want some really good fitting adventure lids ideally. Arai Tour X5 looks good but the price is a bit rich for us
@ontheroadadventure get the subs up and they might send you two to review 🤔 or sell your garmins and put that towards them ......sorry but I will buy a t shirt every little helps
Subs are creeping up now! Sadly Brexit means we have to go back to sunny England otherwise we would have spent even longer touring Europe. Shark havent shown any interest in us yet, youd think they would be keen being that there brand of helmets have been in every shot, Time for something new! Every Like comment and T Shirt helps us more than you know... Thank you for your continued support to us and the channel
Hi Rich & Ewa, great video as always...just thinking, if that bike shop can custom fit the insides of a helmet to fit your head, why not ask if they'll renew the pads in your big hat....🤔
I think Mines gone well beyond stuffing it full of foam, we will change them ASAP, Its our own fault, they should never have been alloud to get this bad
I ride about 35,000 km per year, and buy a new helmet every 2 years or if I drop it, and yes, we Dutch live on the edge, without dikes more than half of the country would be under water twice a day , the place where i live is between 3 and 6 meters below sea level, but yes i was born there and don't think about it , I wish you both a lot of motorcycling fun in our frog country and many safe kilometers
Hi Johnny Thanks for Joining us, Hows the riding in Denmark? we fancy coming that way... I couldnt tell you the Settings off my head, its something we have tested changed and adjusted over time, also settings depend on time of year and available light
Another interesting vid guys. I think that the ‘Knox’ gear you showed in that bike shop is good too. My friends son is a motorcycle journalist, he reviewed their stuff and rated it highly. He’s not one to say it’s good if it ain’t good.
I rarely have a helmet more than three years or so but I do ride daily so they get worn quicker than others perhaps, We have 40mm Cardo speakers in our helmets that work very well
Ritch yes i check everthing on my motorcycle never drop a helmet i paid £ 600 got another 2 years and will replace shoe are the best and has a rachet so never gets loose
Nice you went realy close the town where i life molenaar motor ijselstein about 15 mins away from the beautifull hei en boeicop from there it is about a stone trow away from kinderdijk
I keep my helmets for maximum 5yrs. But I normally change Avery 3 yrs or if I buy a new bike, the helmet to match lol😂. I wear short boots. I have big calves so long boots irritate me. Plus I'm on a Suzuki 1000gt. Long boots feel uncomfortable. Right now I'm wearing an Alpine star R10 helmet. But I use a GT air 2 for work. Lucky your up in Holland, as Poland, Czech, and Romania are half under water now. Which is surprising as you guys were there not that long ago!
Just replace the cheek and skull pads Rich, the helmet is probably OK. I dropped from a 3xl hjc to a xl Aria due to poorly sized pads. Love yer, bye...
Once upon a time helmet manufacturers would have different linings for different countries due to the average shape of that nations head. Eg Japanese tend to have round heads, Germans more square and Italians feline. Maybe worth trying helmets in Poland or Germany for Ewa unless you splash out on a made to measure Shoei
This is the case with different brand helmets, some are round fitting, some oval etc, this is why its important not to pick the helmet you like but to buy the one that fits best
NGL I'm a bit ashamed by the constant request of parks and camping owners to have you moved, it have some Bullock Instant rule. but maybe it also is just the difference of straight forwardness whereas foreigners tend to think from the perspective that what we say is possibly sweetened and intentions are more negative then we might meant. 😂 Either way there are websites that have explored campings for motorbikes that are specially accommodating to bikers. so it could also be a real thing, but it still has surprised me alot

Its a strong Contender for me
We listen to far too much scare mongering when it comes replacing helmets.
Good advice mate, Its not worth taking the gamble once its been dropped, they are only designed to work well once
Funnily enough, i always loose weight on tour as well. Even with all the food, ( cake!) and beer.
Gym membership? Nah. Travel on your bike. The biketravel diet?
Ride safe 👍
Its a odd thing, We do clearly eat well, but probably not as often as you should, the day is often so busy we skip meals allot...
Those Sidi Adventure 2's are excellent but I wont wear then on the continent , air cooled Guzzi & 30 deg temps are a nightmare in them. Got some Falco Marshall's for that.
I have to say the Sidi Boots have been fantastic and id buy the same ones again
Wow i imagine the new lid is worlds apart from what you had before! 15 years must be the record in this comments section!
I swap helmets roughly 5 or 6 years. I think it would depend on the drop and on to what surface. Just swapped to a Nexx Wed3
How do you like the Nexx? Its one we are considering but its a new brand i know nothing about
I swap my helmet every 4 to 5 years. Just bought a Shoei Neotec 3. Great helmet and will do me for a while (until I drop it !!!😅)
Dont Drop it!! Its an Expensive hobby
@ontheroadadventure I like it. I was looking for an adventure style, and it fits my head. I think they make helmets for touratech, but don't quote me on that. It was quite expensive being carbon.
I think the carbon ones are worth having, Lighter and stronger
Super fun video, and to follow all your beautiful motorcycle🏍 camping🏕 adventures. In this last video you almost drove past my house😊
If I had known that, you could have stayed with us😉
Wow, its annoying how often this happens, You all have to shout as we go by and invite us in for a cup of tea!!
Yes, Bike shops are expensive places to visit! We always leave wanting to buy so many things, not only the bikes themselves!
That's the Knox vented jacket I've got. It's a god send on hot days. When we go touring I take armour out of my alpine star jacket and wear my know underneath for when it's a bit chilly. Looks good on you Ewa x
Thank you! We both could have done with mesh stuff earlier on this trip approaching 40 degrees at times
I get a new helmet around every 3 years, loving the Holland part of the trip I would retire in Holland if we were still in the EU
Are we Still hoping to retire in the uk then?
I’ve 3 helmets, an AGV full face, a Scorpion flip up and an off road style Shoei. The Shoei was dropped on the drive last year, but I found a company that can test them to see if they’re still good, and it was. I think others have said this but most companies don’t make that many shell sizes and changing the internal padding may help the fit. Although any excuse to buy a new helmet! I’m eyeing up my fourth at the moment 😊
These are past there best now even if they fit correctly we have worn them almost daily for 2 years in all weathers, there’s no saving them
As for the lowest point in the Netherlands (actually lowest polder) . It's approx. 6.7 metres under sea level. You were close by. You can see it from the A20 when traveling from Rotterdam to Gouda. Good luck next time.
We spent a while looking for this one 🤷♂️ Never mind
Yes you have to be careful not to fall into Fashion and stick to what works
You should invest in good base layers. I have one for staying cool, odlo or something, and one for staying warm, merino wool. I also use a windbreaker between my jacket and my base layer when needed. My jacket and trousers are revit with leather and a lot of mesh which are zipped together.
Ps: a lot of ch*mtrails, must be the Netherlands 😅
We are thinking the layering system is the way to go 👍
I've had Shoei helmets since 1974, they are the only Brand that really fits me. I currently have 2 snd swap between them.
I've seen plenty of bike racers crash and tumble and carry on using the same helmet 😉
If my helmet was to go bouncing and tumbling down a road and show shell damage I'd bin it. A simple fall. NO WAY.
Shoei sell a range of different thickness pads for helmet interiors so you can put in thicker ones.
I think this is the priority to find some thing that fits well and stick to it
Thank you for sharing your adventures we the wife and I have the same helmets from 2006 so we understand now they are quite expensive to replace
We tend to go for mid range helmets, we cant justify the £800 lids, but cheap ones are not a wise idea either....

I really like those too, i used to have a scorpion one, but it doesnt work with out Mics and Cameras so we are hoping for Adventure Style
I think a lot of windmills are used to make flour. Perhaps you should have your helmet measured Ewa especially if you have a Square head.! Food really makes you happy Rich. Simple but nice. The Netherlands is mostly below sea level because they reclaimed the land from the sea.
Yes Flour, oils and for moving water, Clever the Dutch people
Can't get over how lose your lid is. Changed my 6 year old Arai for a new Shark, but I didn’tget on with it, ended up getting another Arai, clearly I've got Arai shaped head. Let's hope a helmet manufacturer gives you some sponsorship as you guys tell it as it is. As always an excellent episode. 👍

On the issue of cost most of the larger outlets have 0% finance options on the level of outlay you are probably intending. Takes some of the initial pain away!
That’s a good idea for people, everyone should have access to good quality lids
Knox factory in the lake district place called Cockermouth, I kid you not 😮
Ah yes Cockermouth! I know that one... We like the look of the Knox stuff, especially the layering idea

Never found another manufacturer that fits straight on comfy

We need to take a look at these for sure
Had a similar issue with losing weight. Changed from Shoei Neotec 2 to Arai Tour X4. Love the Arai but do think I’ll go back to a more conventional and flip face helmet like the Shoei again as the wind noise and pull from the peak is a bit of a nightmare on long tours. And I’d definitely replace a helmet if I dropped it from quite a height but falling from a chair or table, then I’d probably or unless it looked really damaged
We Like the Look of the Arai Tour x5 But they are too expensive for us right now, two of them costs the same a small tour on the bikes itself
@@ontheroadadventure yeah that’s the only bugger of a problem with bike gear. All the decent stuff is 💰 🤦♂️😅
Its difficult because we would much rather put our pennies in the tank and ride but also Cheap kit will not do, Got to get the balance right
A bit of useless knowledge: Much of Anglia around Norfolk is reclaimed fen lands made possible by Dutch ingenuity.
Yes, Its one od those things, you dont miss it if you never had it...
Just bought a shoei using the
PFS system. Brilliant custom fit but not cheap
We are interested in this too, how was the fitting experience?
I went to motoledgends in guilford, they have a fitting room where they measure your head. Then at no extra charge they changed the pads to ensure the perfect fit. They also fitted the pinlock, comms system and set the comms up on my phone and bike. Fantastic service and a brilliant fit
Excellent. Is it the best fitting lid youve had?
Yes and although not cheap worry the expense
What did you give for the measuring service? Does a custom fit lid cost more than one off the shelf by Shoei?
Was great to hear your comments on the Versys 1000 it is such an underrated bike absolutely perfect for touring I love mine 👍
Fantastic bike for Road touring, im surprised they are not more popular
I have a Shoei which I had fitted at motor legends in Guildford it fits like a glove compared to my previous one
The idea does make sense but it doesnt sound cheap!

We like the look of that stuff, its not a cheap option though but it does look like excellent Quality and we like the layering option
Rich: would you recommend changing helmets after so many years?
What speakers do you recommend to be fitted inside the helmet?
I rarely have a helmet more than three years or so but I do ride daily so they get worn quicker than others perhaps, We have 40mm Cardo speakers in our helmets that work very well

Theres nothing worse than dropping your lid. You did the right thing to change it though, its too much of a gamble to risk it
Once upon a time helmet manufacturers would have different linings for different countries due to the average shape of that nations head.
