  • A wind bag event as they dubbed it destroys our neighborhood and city, over 250,000 without power at peak of storm.
Severe weather event on July 31st 2024 in Omaha NE. 90-100 mph winds were officially recorded with unofficial reports of over 100 mph with private home weather stations. The storm seemed upon my observation to have multiple downbursts and microbursts that are recorded just in this video but also very evident of the damage from one neighborhood to the next.
The storm at peak claimed 220,000 homes without power. At the time of this video post 4 days later, still over 100,000 people without power including my house. Largest power outage in Omaha history.

Oh, man, I absolutely understand. This exact thing happened in the Dallas, TX area on May 28 of this year but it's like no one outside the area heard about it. I expected family and friends from outside the state to be calling to check on us. Well, they'd have to have heard that we got slammed with a derecho to even know they needed to! Houston had a derecho a couple weeks earlier and everyone heard about that, smh. For a while I felt like no one cared, and here we were, scrambling to deal with a power outage, blocked roads and branches everywhere!
Anyway, yeah, there were 95 mph winds, so many trees snapped off, signs blown out or over, branches everywhere, and my kids (though they are adults, they're from California so they're not used to wild weather) were terrified! We all huddled in our living room away from the window and hoped it wasn't a tornado... we'd gotten a tornado warning and the radar did show something a bit like a hook echo. Our neighbor's tree fell down like yours... thankfully away from both our houses. Fortunately, and tragically, there was just one fatality... a young man working on a building crew who was blown off a roof. One too many, but I was surprised there weren't more.
I'm glad y'all are safe... I just stumbled upon this video (recommended because of my interest in weather) and sorry to say, I hadn't heard about your storm, either. I guess it only makes the news when it's an EF3+ tornado and hits a major city.
