My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust th-cam.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.
My dad and I would go to the scrap yard and load up with as many mowers that would fit in the truck. We would pay the scrap price which was about $10. We would build about 10 mowers with them then take the leftover stuff back to the yard and load up again. We had buyers for every one we rebuilt.
Better to purge air out the pump without the spray tip on. Just start the engine, pull trigger and let the water flow without restriction. It usually takes about 30 seconds to a minute on a full size triplex commercial pump. You are correct about not letting these small units idle. There is not a bypass when not spraying like there is on commercial machines. The bypass keeps fresh water flowing through the pump at all times.

Last year I got a Honda 13 hp GX 390 pressure washer for free. It was left outside over the winter and the pump froze and cracked. I now have a replacement engine for an old 1968 Sears Suburban garden tractor. Parts is parts!

Things I tell folks about using PWs…
1) before hooking up garden hose, turn on faucet and flush air out.
2) after water supply hookup, turn on water and pull trigger until water flows without out air.
3) with PT running in standby, if you don’t want to shut off engine, turn nozzle or remove to get to low pressure. Prop trigger on. Water will pass thru which in turn reduces heat in the pump and negate blow off of thermo relief on pump.
4) store inside during freezing weather.
5) if you don’t want to follow these step…buy an electric one next time😆

My wife and son chipped in years ago and bought me a pressure washer. I was stupid and left it in an unheated shed over the winter, not realizing the pump is not self draining. The pump cover was cracked. I found a replacement part that was close but not exact. With judicious use of different o-rings I got it to work without leaking. Now I use Pump-Saver and store it where it never goes below freezing.
I always used pump saver but left my pressure washer out and it was stolen. So you can't really expect pump saver to be enough.

That is one of the advantages of living in the semi-boonies. A thief would have to be extremely brazen to come onto the property to steal stuff.

I tried for 2 years i tried to save pumps and fix them. Videos too. After a major effort I mostly now replace the pumps. Just like you did here. Great work. See you later my friends.
I noticed that Bruce went down the pump repair road and found that it wasn’t generally worth it. I remember those videos and that the best remedy was a new Italian pump, I forget the manufacture name. Merry Christmas Bruce and Happy Boxing Day!
Annovi Reverberi Pumps are cheap but decent replacements for the chinese “one season wonders”! If you change their oil every 40hrs they’ll last for years:)

That Kohler engine sure looks like a 6.5hp Predator (Harbor Freight) which sure looks like a Honda. Since they come out of the same Chinese factory it appears that Kohler is into making money now instead of engines. I used the 6.5 Predator on a Trak Vac. Worked great, good engine.

That pressure washer is the same one I have the pump on mine went bye bye so I called Simpson pressure washer customer service I was told about three different repair shop,s for Simpson pressure washer,s they told me they work on the engine but the pump is a no go long story short Northern tool piut a different pump on my unit. Dear Chickanic, the cause for gas not coming out of the fuel line most probably had nothing to do with it being clogged. There is a fine wire mesh filter at the bottom of the gas tank. It will allow gas through but not water. As the tank's content was mostly water, flow was blocked. Regards !

I've bought a few hundred broken pressure washers to fix and flip. Out of all the lawn equipment I've bought I have the best luck making decent money out of them. I've had that exact same pump before and you're better off just installing a generic pump like the one you did. Unless it's a CAT, MITM, or AR it's not worth the hassle to fix. Also I've had good experience w/ CanPump as replacements.

WD40 is said to be gunsmith's best friend, ethanol containing gas is small engine repairmen's best friend (income wise, of course) ;-)
I had a guy just the other day come in with a chainsaw, mind you i'm working on anything from small engine to outboard to ATVS,cars ect. Anyways, he came it, the saw used to run fine and now it doesn't. Had old gas, he put in ''new'' gas and still won't run. Great compression great spark, i quickly give the gas the sniff test...it's rotten as gas gets, to the chemical smell that lingers in your brain. Must of been ''new'' from a gas jug sitting around for years. Anyways, carb clean and it's good to go.
So much of what is see on things that are not used often, or left for time, is just bad gas. Which is great for work, simple too but yeah.

Good job well saved, you can’t fix them all there just isn’t enough hours in the day and as you say some aren’t worth fixing due to parts cost. I just pick and choose the best, I mainly specialise in Hondas as I use them for work and know a lot about them also they have good resale value. You’ve got plenty of good make machines in your junk pile, as you know that’s worth it’s weight in gold alone for spare parts. Good video 🙂👍
Especially in this parts shortage environment, having a parts supply in the backyard is a plus.
Ive been telling folks who are building homemade high power/flow wood splitters look for old lawn tractors. Nowadays many have >20hp engines. Only downside is most they are vertical shafts but minor issue for most builders.

I have the same Simpson setup, couple grips I have is how low the frame is, it sucks, I removed mine and stuck it on a larger taller chassie. Also if it's not on level ground, the washer had some serious vibrations and would walk away, turn sideways etc. Oh and the thermal relief valves SUCK in these units. Once they blow once forget about it will keep leaking, I gave up after 3 oem Simpsons. Wish they had a trigger lock on these, the pumps will blow the relief valve in 20 seconds or less and ruin them

Those bone yards have a lot of money to be made in spare parts on ebay if you had time to strip the good sellable item in the spring each year . But you need to know what parts in demand and have time for striping and listing and shipping . I have bought parts on ebay used to repair my stuff and saved a lot over new dealer parts with Mark up that made repair cost feasible. And sell them online doest reduce your dealer parts business because those sales aren't in your local area.

It’s actually not that surprising that the pump is toasted. Most weekend warriors buy a “high end” pressure washer at Lowes and don’t ever bother to check/change oil and don’t even know the pump contains oil either. Eventually they take it to the dump and start over…win for us :)
I have like 40 projects to do six riding lawn mowers. 20 push mowers. Chainsaws weed wackers. I'm going to be busy all winter long thank goodness, I have heat in myself work shop

Interesting tidbit about idling..... I need to figure out why my echo 266 that I converted into long hedge trimmers a few years ago is bogging down now....after putting in a new fuel filter, tank vent and air filter, then checking for carbon behind the muffler, I might just see if I can find a carb on Amazon.

I really like your helpful hints given in the shows I have watched of yours! I Volunter at a habitat store and we get many shoddy saws, mowers,blowers, etc that people have trashed mostly by leaving ethanol fuel in the carbs. Any way thanks!!

FYI there is no way you can tie something to keep the trigger compressed when you cant actually have your hand holding the wand from flailing everywhere, might be an inconvenience but its best to shut off and turn on only when needing to use it. Great video btw

That was cool. I assume at auction good engine/ bad pump and bid accordingly. I have got an occasional one with good pump and needs carb clean for a good win. The problem here in Michigan is that people leave them in the garage and the water freezes in the pump because they don’t winterize the pump (or drain the carb). Down your way they might die of abuse at idle, in the northern states the cause of death tends to be lack of winterization. It is different if you are in Canada, then it is caused by a lack of winterisation. Nice job having the skill to recognize (or recognise ) the 3 leg pump being an acceptable repurpose for your own use.
I haven't caught many of your videos as I would like to, but glad you have a good amount of subscribers. Great job and that's interesting never thought about letting the pressure washers idle too much. Great job. The engine still appeared to be surging maybe tear into the emulsion tube or bowl nut and clean them really good with carb cleaner?

What’s the issue with American pressure washer pumps if they can’t idle? The electrical Kränzle ones I’m used to can idle for quite a long time without any issues, the bigger shops even get them without auto-stop because the constant stopping from an auto-stop can wear it out quicker, the prevailing wisdom is that if you’re over 50% duty cycle during any session, the pump shouldn’t stop in between and instead just run against the internal bypass.

The main reason the pumps fail on pressure washers is people not using pump saver when there done using it. I see alot of that at my shop.
