    For cool season crops, I use this method: Go outside, barefoot, shorts, and tee-shirt. If your first thought is, "Dang! It's cold. I need to go back inside and bundle up," then it is too cold to sow seeds. If your first thought is, "It's a bit chilly, but okay," then it is safe to sow seeds. Note, this doesn't apply to people residing in south Florida. They can go outside barefoot, shorts, and tee-shirt year-round. 🤣🤣🤣

      Reminds me of the test to see if you should take your dog for a walk. If you put your hand on the side walk and it’s so hot you have to pull your hand away…. Then your dog will burn their paws, too.

      @@Junzar56 LOL. It is pretty much the same thing. Forget all the gadgetry, charts, and tables. Just use a little common sense. I know, that is a big ask for the younger generations. But it works well for the baby boomers.

    Unfortunately, you really can't rely on 'average' temperatures in a lot of places anymore. Our local climate here has gone completely haywire, and I just anticipate having to succession sow seeds so that I'll have something ready at the right time

      No but they are a start. I also keep notes in a journal and look ahead in the forecast. It can help predict the speed of warming or cooling.

    Hi Gary. In raised beds wouldn't a thick layer of mulch help to keep the soil temps warmer by a degree or so? That coupled with a low tunnel or a couple layers of frost blankets. Of course, I am only thinking of cold hardy plants not warm season crops.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      It keeps them insulated and warmer fall into winter. But also once colder, mulch keeps them cooler longer spring into summer as it keeps the cold in and summer sun out.

    If you are growing a cooler climate tomato like Stupice or New York, would you plant that a little earlier than regular varieties?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      You can. It is all base on your soil temps and the preferences of plants. Some warm crops do better with colder soil.

    Why can't you take one of those long thermometers you use to check your compost pile and push it in the ground (about 4 inches) at several places and get a ground temp that way???????????? I'd rather spend $20 bucks and get a real reading??

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      You could. I think you need more of a digital thermometer. But it's a lot of work to measure spots through out the garden and monthly. It works for sure. Just write down all the info you collect so you can use the next year.
