  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #574
    While looking at the area around the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats on Google Maps, I spotted something interesting -- waaaaaay out on the farthest reaches of what used to be prehistoric Lake Bonneville.
    Did it actually exist -- or was it just an elaborate troll? Should I risk driving 40 miles over very rough roads, then bushwhacking miles through the open desert, just to see if it was really there?? I think you know the answer!!

    My father and his brother created the statue I believe about 5 years ago. They actually drug the wood behind a abt and carried the supplies out with them, camped overnight and created it. The painting really has nothing to do with the area but they were fishermen and hunters

    Several thousand years ago, Lake Bonneville broke through the natural dam that contained it and carved out the Snake River Plain across Southern Idaho, from near Bear Lake, clear across the state. It left behind fields of "watermelon gravel," huge basalt boulders ground and rounded like watermelons from tumbling along under the force of all that water heading for the ocean. There are many such boulder fields across Twin Falls and Owyhee counties.

    • @pchaynes
      @pchaynes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anyone who wants to see some of the boulders can visit Celebration Park in southwest Idaho, adjacent to the Snake River. There are even some remnants of stone houses there. You will have to hike or ride a horse, it is nonmotorized. There are also some petroglyphs.

    • @SCSlimBoiseID
      @SCSlimBoiseID 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pchaynes Been there years ago, not long after it opened. Kids and I walked the south bank of the river for a couple miles. Lots of things to see if one looks closely enough. "Take only pictures, leave only footprints," along the trails is a good practice there. My son used to do rock climbing on the north side.

    The totem was probably hauled out by old-school horses or mules. Bonneville speed week is cool! An interesting optic is that, because of the curvature of the earth (roughly 1 foot/mile). racers appear to rise out of the salt as they approach and then disappear as they move away from you.

    Dear WONDERHUSSY
    I ❤️ your amazing TRAVEL SPIRIT 👏 , i just got hooked onto your channel and I see you did the Bonneville Salt Flats which is one of me favorite destinations to go to for any kind of roadtrip wether you're passing by or going there for its own destination. This place is my own slice of heaven as the sunrises and sunsets just are the best ever as I have only been there 4 times and even got stuck there once. I had to call the bonneville towing and got charged $600 to get out of that rut, so definitely be careful out they're as the salt flats do look deceiving in terms of seeing what is good ground vrs bad ground.
    I am amazed about the secrets you have discovered upon the salt flats as i would love to know where that is at so I can check it out myself. Keep up your amazing content as you keep that travel spirit up and alive everyday :) Best wishes

    Is the fish on the Lake Bonneville Guardian Totem the famous Lahoten Trout? I believe that it lived in this area of the Great Basin and still survives in small numbers in protected streams and creeks in the High Desert of the west. You can see them at the Bend Oregon Natural Museum in a protected creek that runs through the museum grounds.

    No matter what you should rinse the entire bottom of your vehicle, and all your brake, and suspension parts as soon as possible to keep the salt from EATING your car and it's components

    A legendary car as well, I always wanted to drive my Bonneville on the Bonneville salt flats, I had a 97, I loved that car. It's nice that Hyundai decided to name their vehicles after American locations like GM plant Ford and Chrysler used to, of course GM still has a couple.

    Looks like a Salmon. Looks like off-road country to me. I hope someone puts a band around the top and bolts it tight to prevent further cracking. Great Find and Icon.
