My son and daughter in law bought me the Amber Sawcut Swayback for Christmas and it’s perfect Thanks for the great review and the tribute to Tony Bose I love the knives he designed for Case and have most of the ones I can afford
I have the TB Swayback on the way to me in Mediterranean Blue. I'm also waiting for some RR's to arrive. I have never handled a Rough Ryder, looking forward to the introduction.
I think both knives are ones anyone would enjoy. I really like the two bade Case model too. Good ideas never get old and these knives were good ones. The Case models have a lot of pretty ones to pick from. However; they cost more to get one. The T.B. in their model number makes collectors pay more. The ones I have are smooth opening and just easy to like. But, so is the Rough Rider; the Case is the pretty one of the two and being smaller is something I like too. ✨😺✨🙂
I EDC the swayback Jack in a nice jigged blue with the red case shield. It is an excellent utility knife I use it for cutting leather, opening boxes, slicing cardboard. It Also works beautifully as a carving knife for whittling. Definitely my favorite case knife.
Tobias, I just wanted to let you know that you are one my favorite TH-camrs. The knowledge you possess is absolutely amazing. Thank you for all of your awesome videos and sharing your collection and knowledge with us. Please keep up the great work!
I love all of those knives. I wanted a GEC #47 Viper but availability became non existent. The RR Work Knife took its place and I'm not afraid to put it to hard use. I picked up the Swayback Gent last year with the same handle and love carrying that too. Case has always felt like good quality to me. I do feel more comfortable using the RR on the tougher tasks.
I have one with Cabernet Bone scales, a Double X stamped blade with a Long-tail C and 2 dots (stars?) on the tang. It has the Case Traditions (hotdog) shield. I carry that Rough Ryder everyday. Great video start to finish. Thanks Tobias
It is a beauty for sure. The backside might have the same beautyfull bone as the show side in my opinion, but it is an absolutely nice one. It asks to pick up and use it. Thank you for the review Tobias.
I do like these. The desk knife is very cool. I have both versions of the RR work knife. You gave me one and Big Red gave me the other. Paul Mason here in the U.K. does one, but at £600, I’ve yet to get one. The Wharncliffe here is predominantly on the Ettrick pattern. I just picked up a Michael May Ettrick/Wharncliffe yesterday and I’ve others by Wright and Cocker. The blade was designed as a small game dressing knife. The Sway Back is very like a chubby Ettrick, especially with the blade/handle angle. I’m just fiddling with my latest Ettrick and a couple of Barlow patterns and it occurred to me that the Ettrick is to the Sway Back Gent, what the Slim Barlow is to the standard Barlow.
That would make sense. Bose said it was based off of Old English Jacks. He also liked to say he didn't design new knives, he breathed life into old forgotten knives.
I have the 2020 version (with XX stamped on the blade) in vintage bone-bought it at the Case store in Bradford-very happy with it. Thanks for the videos!
A few years ago I picked up a similar knife from Shepard Hills. A Case red picked bone wharncliffe T.B.61117 CV 3-3/16" overall length with a 2-1/4" blade. I like it. The blade isn't centered on mine, but the CV steel makes it a very usable dress EDC. Great walk and talk.
A little over a year ago I got a swayback gent as a birthday gift. And you are correct, it's a real joy to carry and use! Reminds me of an Ettrick pattern, just with a shorter handle. Mine has chestnut peach seed jig bone, and CV steel. I love that knife. Cheers, buddy.
I've always wanted a TB knife but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have an unused, first version RR black micarta work knife and the handles are shrinking, cracking and falling apart in its box - which I have heard is a known issue for that knife. I hope the denim micarta version won't do that. It's on my wish list too.
I'll need to check my black paper micarta again. I recall it gapping from the handle a year ago and I pressed it back in place. I have my knives in a humidity controlled area (kept around 60%) which is normally a good level. But yes, I've heard about the issue.
I noticed some “shrinkage” in my denim micarta work knife. There is a slight gap on both sides where the covers meet the bolster that was not there when I got the knive about a year ago. Still very solid and sturdy though. It is carried to work daily.
Greetings Tobias, I bought that same Case Sway Back Gent. I love the sawcut jigging on Case knives and I wish they offered it more commonly. The only complaint I have about the knife is the shield. It looks like the shield steel is thinner and flexes when pressed into place. You may prefer "Barnboard jigging" to "Saw Cut". It is more of the uniform jigging pattern you described. Peace, DD
I've got some barndoor jigged as well. You're right, I think I like it better but I still like the sawcut. I really wish they would start using fewer shields. Some times it takes away from the beauty of the handle. This is especially true of their stag. They have some of the prettiest stag in the business!
What a SUPER cool slide show! I love the 1920s-style engineering sketch with penciled dimensions. Gonna pick up a couple of the Denim Micartas from SMKW. The Wharncliffe pattern blade is perfect for the work cutting chores I have. Been using a CJRB Talla for that, but the handle texture has worn a hole in my pants pocket.
Thanks. I normally end up writing all the stuff down in a small note book. Why not just share that page in one spot. I know it would be easy for people to just pause and read but I figured, why not just read the screen and let just let it run. I hate to pause.
Wonderful, I have a couple TB Panama Trappers and they are large elegant back pocket knives. I used to hate the Trapper design but, my ocd has come down on it not being symmetrical enough for me, I do now enjoy the in pocket comfort for carry they are, I do love an equal end knife like my GEC Tidioute 54 Moose with eggs and hot sauce acrylic with a pinned on nickelsilver guitar shield inlay. In my opinion, sometimes the inlay is the pinnacle, being that it is pinned on gives me 100% more comfort in knowing the shield isn't going to get lost, I do have one I really love that is like that
I'm not a Wharnie (or sheepfoot) fan - the level cutting edge restricts the tasks it can perform imho. However, I have one of these (Cabernet Jigged Bone) and I'm with you all the way about how the Wharnie suits this pattern. But I hardly ever carry it, it's just that bit smaller than what I like. Maybe Case could offer a slightly enlarged version - call it the Swayback Grandad perhaps?
Great review. The Gent has been on my radar since I got my RR work knife last year. I was never really into wharncliff blades, but have since really started to like them. I would love to get my hands on a GEC Viper, but the prices on those are just getting a bit ridiculous. Take care and thanks for sharing your collection.
The swayback gent that I own has the same bomb shield, but it is placed upside down versus the one you show? My knife has XX stamped into the SS blade. Every single other bomb shield on other Case knives, even other patterns, always have this particular shield in reverse, compared to my knife. Anybody else seen this?
I got that Marbles Cattle knife and really like it. If it just had the main clip blade on the show side and nail nicks on opposing sides it would be perfect ! Sorta strange having the main clip blade in back, I wonder why they did it that way ? If they ever changed it , I'd buy five more. Anyhow I'm really enjoying it 😀
I like mine quite a bit Tobias I have 3 and now that you have one you won’t be able to stop buying them now you’ll see!!!!! Some say it’s a perfect EDC knife!!!!! It’s been around for awhile it’s a great piece!!!!! You will buy more lol 😂
I thoroughly enjoyed that, thanks. But the supervisor would have to be the Tackler, wouldn't it? [joke] I've been looking at the Case Tribal, which you mentioned. A Tony Bose design too, I've read. The Zulu Spear blade on it led me to Tony's own knife which must have inspired the Tribal and to the original Schrade Pen knife from which Tony copied for his. The grinds look identical, albeit Tony's is a larger blade. Of course the Zulu Spear appears to be a modified Wharncliffe so there's nothing new under the sun. But it is fun trying to find the source of these things. Thanks again.
There is often ebbs and flows in every business. I also kniw that Case does better with some patterns than others. I think some of it has to do with tooling wearing out.
Prefer the cv steel versions to the stainless ones….I could only made two versions in cv a few years back….red jigged and the other brown jigged. I bought both and have never had a regret. If Case built all their knives as well as these I’d have a drawer full of Cases instead of G.E.C.s…and be a lot wealthier.
You put on a very fine show sir! Don’t stop!
My son and daughter in law bought me the Amber Sawcut Swayback for Christmas and it’s perfect Thanks for the great review and the tribute to Tony Bose I love the knives he designed for Case and have most of the ones I can afford
A fine looking knife nice FNF .Great review TG
I have the TB Swayback on the way to me in Mediterranean Blue. I'm also waiting for some RR's to arrive. I have never handled a Rough Ryder, looking forward to the introduction.
I love the Bose Swayback knives and buy them at every opportunity Thanks for another fine video
They are pretty cool. I'm looking for more of them as well -- as soon as my bank account says so!
Really like the look of the bone on this one! Nice wharncliffe blade on it as well! Thanks for the look Tobias!
I have carried the TB Swayback gent and the RR work knife is on my work bench. I like them both right where they are. lol Nice knives Tobias.
I think both knives are ones anyone would enjoy. I really like the two bade Case model too. Good ideas never get old and these knives were good ones. Wow really amazing edc knives reviews video!!
And
I have about 14 Case Knives in my Case Knives collections right now!
I EDC the swayback Jack in a nice jigged blue with the red case shield. It is an excellent utility knife I use it for cutting leather, opening boxes, slicing cardboard. It Also works beautifully as a carving knife for whittling. Definitely my favorite case knife.
I could feel your emotions for this knife pal, hope you enjoy using it.atb paddy 👍☘️
Thanks. It's a pretty fun knife and well worth what I paid. It's simple lovely. Can a knife be lovely and still manly? Will a Tony Bose knife can!
That's one pattern in the Case line I have been wanting to pick up, the TB swayback. I love his designs.
Very nice review. Thanks for sharing.
That is a very nice knife. Been on my radar for a while. Thanks for showing this bit of Case goodness.👍
The RR work knife also reminds me of the GEC 47 Viper. Also the Rough Ryder Reserve 009.
Tobias,

Thank you. I am humbled by your words. I shall do my best not to disappoint.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias You couldn't, even if you tried!

Love the sway back use it all the time, perfect size for a country with stupid knife laws. The tb tear drop is a good one as well.
My grail knife is a Tony Bose custom, Reese his son is a dang fine knife maker himself.

Most interesting review. I have tried working with a wharncliffe blade but couldn’t get on with it compared to a spear point on a canoe.
I would have to agree with you that the spear point is probably the most versatile blade shape going.
Enjoyed this as I do all your videos. This would be one Case I'd like to have. The shield looks like an arrowhead to me.

Sounds like it might be a factory error. Sure hope its not a fake.

Lately cases quality has seemed to really come back
There is often ebbs and flows in every business. I also kniw that Case does better with some patterns than others. I think some of it has to do with tooling wearing out.
You should review the Ka-bar 2753 Cleveland Ohio it's a really knife and think it was made in the 1980's with a nice ebony handle
I would need to find one first.
If you don't have a swayback gent, you're missing out.
Tobias they say the reason the barlow has along bolster is to help support the blade is that true.
I would assume if it is a solid bolster it would definitely strengthen the pivot point. So I'm sure there is some truth to it.
Does a wharncliffe blade have a recommended purpose? (Please see my other comment).
It's a good blade for wood working/ whittling. Slick Slicers mentioned his comment that it was designed for dressing small game.
I don't like the different handles on the sway back gent. It's a nice knife but I think the different handles really takes away from the looks.
To each their own I guess. This looks like the blade is on backwards to me.
As you said, to each their own.
Нож великолепен, спасибо за обзор.
Maybe an old weaver's knife rather than lambsfoot?
what a beaut!
Tony Bose knives are pricey now
I would expect a work knife to be bigger than a gent's knife.
