"Antoa Nyamaa" is a popular river god deity with its shrine at Antoa in the Ashanti Region in Ghana. Opanin Dabisese shared a harrowing account with the dreaded ‘Antoa Nyamaa’ deity. If victims go to Antoa to overturn a curse, they are made to perform traditional sacrifices to appease the river God. The victim is made to bend in the river and a fowl is killed over their heads. The fowl is then thrown up and if it lands with the breast area facing up, you are redeemed. If the fowl does not turn over but sits, you beat the surface of the river while pleading with the god for forgiveness until the fowl turns over to face its breast upwards. Victims walk back home after an accepted plea and rituals, and the size of the "water-filled" or "protruding" belly, caused by the curse, reduces after days or months.
