If anything, this video makes me respect NL's regular chess skills more. It is now obvious it in no way came naturally to him. I can't even imagine how hard he must have worked as a child.

I think he just plays most games through trial and error then memorizing patterns that work. Every week when he plays SAP he finds something that works and hard forces it without ever considering any modifications unless he sees someone else do it.
Yeah, NL clearly has 0 tactical awareness, but he still managed to be 1500+ elo

@@vario6492 If they had purchased either item (knight or shackles) it would've been an easy victory. Either of them counter Edea by allowing the King to take her as soon as she knight checks.
NL trying to escape that fucking Bishop+Rook+Knight monstrocity of a piece will never not be funny
27:46 my favorite part. NL has 3 moves in a row where he can capture the bishop for free, ignores all of them, then ends up hanging his reaper and then when the computer doesn't take he gets confused and accuses the computer of throwing.

This man would absolutely demolish me in chess but was struggling to take a BISHOP with a piece that can snipe any piece on the same coloured tile as it. My brother in Christ, if you put the reaper on a dark tile, you can kill the bishop no matter where it goes on the board.
It's fascinating how this man even understands how the knight moves in regular chess.

All three enemy pieces are on light squares, reaper is on a dark square. You can: move the reaper one space and fork every piece on the board, or: do nothing at all. hmmm....
I'm over here thinking "finally, a game NL will be instantly crazy good at", I can't really fathom what I just watched. It's either an off day for him or he's trying to convince me to buy the game myself.
I don't know man, I think it's been an off period for NL, he focuses so much on banter that his gaming abilities have gone down
For some reason, he went into the game thinking it was just chess. Nobody explained to him there were new pieces, and so for some reason his brain failed to comprehend that in this game you have to read and learn what the pieces do. Which is weird, because you can clearly see the pieces are different with different clothers, and yet he never checked what the enemy bishop with a hat does. Also, apparently, what he said at the end, it seems his brain is so fixated in normal chess he is physically incapable of realizing there are new pieces.

It's actually crazy how many times the ai was begging for the reaper to get a melee kill but nl ignored it lol
it seems that reaper can actually only take pieces that are of the same color, even if they are in moving range, meaning that it probably also cannot take witches and queens even if they are in melee range
@@jiggly821For sure, you can see it when it's adjacent to the enemy king and he mouses over it. The reaper must obey its capture rules even in melee.

I think people are usually way too harsh on you. It is difficult to internalize gameplay mechanics whilst entertaining an audience. I also realize analytics are harsh and you need to lean into what does well, so that means we are unlikely to ever get another series like Deadly Premonition.
All that being said this video makes you look genuinely brain fried. It is one extra rule more complex than regular chess, and my man is out here acting like they want him to build the Cern Hadron Collidor. I know you are dismissive of advice and criticism, and for good reason. However, I think you should try and slow your dang roll during tutorials and try to meet the games at the level they are asking for.
I love your content, you are very good at being entertaining. The entertainment value plummets into a ravine when you get frustrated over fairly simple mechanics. Thank you for the endless hours of pog. I will be there in chat barely saying anything.

He's turned into a minimum effort streamer who does nothing to:
Improve at any games
Learn any new games
Interface with any other content creators
Foster any sense of community (outside the peloton)

@@MrBlahblah22 Nah. If he was minimum effort it'd be 5 hours of react content every day except Friday. Friday would be 3 hours and 2 playing SAP. He puts forth effort to try things. I just think his life has changed so much in the past 5 years that he's a little overloaded. Have you seen some streamers? They barely talk, let alone attempt to make jokes. NL is the only streamer I can easily listen to for a whole stream. I think he just needs to slow down and maybe try having fun for himself for a bit. Also like 10% less glancing at chat would do wonders.
He plays with the same 5 people doing jackbox and occasionally with Dan doing something random. Not exactly tons of effort on the interfacing front.
Popular streamers that barely talk can get away with it because they're cracked at whatever game or games they play. I prefer a balance of gameplay and banter, which was NL like 3+ years ago. He was my favorite streamer by miles and miles. I'm not saying he doesn't have a lot going on in his life, I'm just saying it sucks to watch him slide so far down the banter slope that it's actually painful to watch him play games, this game is just the most recent example.
In NL's words, I'm dumb for complaining "ugh toy no worky anymore," which is fair. I'm literally just shouting into the void of the youtube comment sections as if it were a damn reddit post. Even so, it's frustrating and I'm frustrated by this video and his current gameplay effort.

Tbf to the chatter, it is a game that strikes all his boxes, the issue I think is that it isn't a banter game. He needed to play it for youtube not for twitch, probably, or at the very least focus more. No way he would play so badly if he wasn't semi distracted imo.

For anyone watching this who is put off by the difficulty, I assure you it isn't as difficult as.. erm.. maybe this video makes it look - The Witch Queen is a powerful piece, but not as powerful as it looks in this video.
What is the strategy for beating her?
@@TheEneccain this case walking your king closer to the enemy king to help with checkmate. Since she will do perpetual checks you want to have enough pieces to keep your king covered and safe.
Generally more pieces is better because you can trade equally to win, so as long as you trap the witch or fork the king and witch you can beat her.
@@kosame33 Is NL supposed to have better or more pieces at that point? Most of them seem pretty bad to fork or trap anything.
@@TheEnecca NL is definitely supposed to be stronger at that point, but he glossed over the rewards of the previous encounters. He should either have had more pieces or more relics / potions.
@@tsevasa Another mistake that NL is making is worrying about losing his queen to the Witch-Knight fork - as long as his queen is protected, he would be trading his queen for the witch, which is a good trade - He's not used to facing a piece more powerful than his queen, and he's hardwired into "lose queen = bad" but the trade here is obviously to his advantage -

I hope he gives it another shot. The shop potions could've helped him slay the witches with his first move, but there's no real way to realize that until you've played through a few times. I thought he did well.
It seems the reaper is a really bad piece that he just let completely destroy all of his runs.

it covers half of the board, it's very powerful. if he had threatened the witch with a princess by putting the princess on a black square, the witch couldn't have captured the princess without being captured by the reaper.
@@OzThe reaper cant capture kings, queens and witches. The witch can freely take the princess in that situation since reaper doesnt threaten her.
Such a shame the reaper cannot target the witch. It is a written exception specifically on the piece. I think the fact that it can't threaten check is another weakness, as there were times where the reaper was literally blocking check from NL's other pieces. @@OzThe

I wonder if it's trivialised by buying 1 "moves like other pieces this turn" shop item and nailing the witch queen with your king suddenly moving like a rook.
I downloaded the demo and the only way I could beat her was by the AI making a mistake and letting me checkmate the king in 1 move(which I setup earlier) instead of checking me with her forever. I couldn't take her lol, she's crazy.

really intense longtime chess players get like this in my experience; where they have so automatically ingrained certain elements of the game that a variant with extra pieces (especially ones that resemble normal ones) is just fundamentally nearly impossible for them to play
it is unfortunate because the game seems really fun! and it's certainly very fun to watch, i guess it's just not suitable. it also seems annoying as fuck to stream with backseating even if i'm also screaming at the screen watching LOL

For a minute I was baffled how he couldn't remember how pieces move. Then I remembered he's played so much regular chess that it's hardwired in his brain. Plus this game does a crazy good job of adding pieces that are way different than normal. I can see how it'd be frustrating and confusing, but I hope he tries again cause the brain exercise is pog rich
this guy HAS to be colorblind…. Because there is no other explanation for how he fails to realize that the potential moves of each piece are highlighted in red. About 20 minutes in he freaks out for half the game about how the viking can take his king because “it can move twice” …. Every time he puts his cursor over the viking (or any piece) IT SHOWS ITS MOVES
not to mention the bell rings when the king is in check...

What the hell, i thought he was good at chess. What the heck happen?
He's an absurdly slow learner and instantly gets stuck in habits when he learns new things finally, so him being dogshit at this tracks
From what I've seen of Northernlion over the years, he's very good at learning what to do in very specific situations by repeating each situations a large amount of time. He's played a lot of chess so he can easily recognize situations he's been in before and make good decisions for each one.
What he's terrible at is using previous knowledge in new situations. He needs to fail multiple times at that new situation to learn how to deal with it.
This game is chess++. He's never been at this situation so he's terrible at it but because it's chess++, he assume he should be good at it because he's good at chess. He's obviously not and quickly grows annoyed and start making even stupider decision due to it.
That's my theory anyway.
@@IIfranckII Pretty good/well elaborated take on it honestly. He gets pretty damn good at things eventually, but it can be painful getting there.
I agree with one caveat. He's good at figuring out new games. He often learns games with completely new concepts absurdly quickly. His issue is when the game changes in any way.
He knows chess intimately, but can't do chess 2.0 at all because it changes chess.
He was the god of SAP, but when animals started getting updated, he got washed.
He was top 1% of rumbleverse, but when updates came out, he fell off and actively starting hating it.
He loved Wildfrost, but after the first update, he gave up on it.
If cobalt core ever gets an update at any point, he'll never touch it again, despite loving it enough to make a YT exclusive on it.
The only reason he's still great at backpack battles (fingers crossed) is because he doesn't actually know what anything in the game does yet. The second he actually understands something going on in the game and it changes, he'll start self-destructing.
