As a horology nerd, I have to correct one thing. "Regulator" isn't a brand, it's a type of clock; or (more accurately) on modern versions it's a nod back to a time when regulator style clocks were the most accurate. Before regulator clocks, the average clock was accurate to within five minutes per week or so, but regulators were accurate to within 10 seconds per month. Manufacturers began using the regulator markings to denote the accuracy of their products, meaning people could trust them enough to use them as a standard by which to set their own personal watches.
Nice work though. As with everything you make, it looks good!

As a Bambu Lab owner and (not anymore) lover, you should know that they recently pushed a software update which locks third party accessories to work, making mandatory to use their accessories and software. Keep in mind that this is the same company which took the open source slicer software from Prusa, and then rebranded as their software. They had to open it after users discovered it was a cloned and rebranded software (which open source software requires to do usually).
I love their printer because it always works, but it's easy to make the perfect printer stealing ideas and functionality from every company on the market and not caring about open source ethics and other people's ideas (and also patents).

    • @Soundpost-f2l

They also force you to connect to their servers in order to use their software. Proprietary software from them is one thing. You can embed the magnet inside a printed part by pausing the print (you can do it in the slicers), inserting the magnet, and letting the printer print over it. This makes sure the magnet never falls out.
(Pause the print right before bridging over the hole to make sure the magnet doesn't sit proud of the part to avoid crashing the nozzle into it) You can also do the same thing to embed nuts in your print.

Be careful with putting magnets in a 3D printer. Mine on layer ~24 of all the pieces made a ridge that I always had to sand... I thought the Z axis threaded bar had a defect that I was unable to see, but no, it was the damn magnetic bed that I bought from Amazon. I suppose that at layer ~24 the head stopped feeling the magnetic attraction and made a tiny jump, now that it has a bed held with clamps it prints perfectly.
By the way, to leave things embedded in plastic pieces, what I do is print the holes 0.3 mm deeper and then melt some plastic towards the object with a soldering iron. It is also useful for fixing broken pieces or removing traces of supports.

when drilling thin brass, 2 things that help.
    1. Brass your drill bits. essentially grinding a flat on the leading edge so it's not a scoop, if you work with thin/soft metals a lot, it's worth getting a whole set and doing it to all of them, then picking up any specifics piecemeal and brassing them, too.
2, double sided tape to some scrap wood, then give it a good squeeze in a vice with something to protect the brass surface finish like another piece of wood.

A possible solution to the key issue is to make a low profile "thumbwheel" key that can stay permanently attached to the clock face and allowing you to wind the clock without needing the use of the key it came with. To make it less noticeable you could route away most of the face of the thumbwheel to leave just enough material to connect the mount to the keyway with the outer thumbwheel and have enough strength to wind the gears. Maybe knurl the outside to make winding it easier.

The next project will involve designing a protective, transparent glass enclosure for the clock mechanism. This enclosure will utilize multiple rectangular glass panes, assembled using a stained-glass technique. The brass connectors will provide an aesthetically pleasing patina while simultaneously preventing dust contamination. ❤

To solve the winding problem, could you make ratcheting leavers pretuding from the sides, that are perminantly connected to the winding pins. Then to wind it, you just move them back and forth. You could even have them spring loaded, so you only needed to push them in one direction and they would naturally return.
I think this would fit well with the open style of the clock.

Up front, I'm a woodworker, so I know exactly two things about machining (jack, and s**t). I do dig your channel, and appreciate your sense of humor - it seems to span makerhood. I perked up at the swarf idea as part of your merch - when I do something as a gift, and that object has drawers, or is a box or something, I like to tuck a few planer shavings inside. Had more than a few people ask me later, "What does this do?" Not sure that translates to metal swarf, since it can be hurt-y.

Beautiful job on the clock. I have found sometimes getting the expensive end mills will prevent the odd break that you seem to be experiencing on those that broke. But then it hurts even more when they do break, especially if it’s from a bone head mistake. It’s kind of hard to avoid breaking with the small cutters any way. I have personally seen people break 1 inch carbide end mills and it makes you glad when you aren’t the one footing the bill.

Great project! Some people would call that milling machine accessory a "Cherrying head"; brass inlay in wood (looked great!) is called Boulle work after Andre-Charles Boulle. A lot of Boulle work is super fancy. One more: clock makers call the ring you epoxied a "chapter ring" and they have special black lacquer to inlay the numbers, sort of like the epoxy you used. They might also use silvering powder to keep the brass bright in color and be anti-tarnish. Again very nice project.

That 3D printer is AWESOME. With all the features it provides like the auto bed leveling and the filament switching stuff, and its ease of use, it being a little over $1k is a really good deal. I mean, it's a $1000 printer. $1000 printers from a decade ago with manual bed leveling were also reliable. With a well made printer, auto-leveling just adds convenience. With a not so well made printer, auto-leveling helps compensate for a warped print bed.

I'd say the multimaterial setup makes it already worth the price. There's some channels that make big print parts and use petg as the support material because petg and pla don't stick together. After printing some huge parts with pla only, the support removing is such a massive waste of time...

Hey on the magnets you are selling. You won't have to glue in the magnets if you design a hole for the magnet on the inside (or use like 12% infill or something that lets the magnet friction fit in) pause the print at a layer or two above the magnet height, then boom magnet always stays inside the part and looks super cool. Great Video as always. I'm sure I'm not the first to comment this, but I have an idea to improve your magnets. Try embedding them into to part by designing a cavity, pausing the print and insert the magnet. Afterwards resume the print. There are a lot of great guides on how to do it properly and it safes the magnet from falling out or breaking when accidently dropped.

Really fun, it does seem a little outside what you normally do but not in a bad way at all. You're almost always making purposeful things, so in that sense I think this is a great fit, it's just that rather than making something new, you're transforming something that already exists. And, uh, embracing the imprecision in a way we don't usually get to see. :) But it's nice; it doesn't need the precision. Great little clock!
