Yusuke does a great job doesn't he Hugo? Certainly lots of work in prep and post production with all those subtitles etc. (Especially when dealing with my dodgy Japanese).
This is a perfect way to learn Japanese. In a limited setting of a conversation with easy to read English and Japanese subtitles with a native and non native speaker. 完璧です

When I was in college, I took 2 semesters of intensive Japanese classes--5x a week, 50 mins every day--and did a summer abroad in Japan. Understanding casual Japanese spoken by peers of my age was waaaay over my head, haha! I totally understand Peter's feelings!

7:15 Definitely. I second the idea that studying a foreign language at an elder age is not harder than at any other age. Actually, studies show that it sustains a proper functioning of a human's brain, also (they say) helps in preventing such conditions as Alzheimer. It is an amazing "work-out" exercise for the brain, and anyone can do it, at their own pace. Thank you for allowing us to watch this interview, really useful and interesting. I'm 15 and I've been trying to self-study Japanese so hard for just months that I'm already so familiar in a lot of things and that I could already read Japanese writings for a bit and I could already understand what Japanese people are talking about but sometimes there are just some words that I haven't learned or heard of yet and your videos are helping me learn better! I hope you upload more of these!
Peter-san started learning Japanese when he was about the same age as you are now. When it comes to language learning, there is an advantage to starting young. I'm sure you will become a great Japanese speaker. (^_^)
My friend taught himself Japanese when he was 9, and it seems like he's mastered it in a way where he doesn't have to think about it as how we would: the grammar and the structure of the sentences and all that; he seems to just simply understand and know Japanese without thinking about it! It's crazy, I truly hope I won't have to think about it if I keep learning
If we were children, we would learn a second language quickly. But even adults have no problem with it except that taking some time. I have seen many people who have made it possible.

Many countries have similar problems, especially in democratic countries. If you look at Peter's home page, you will see that it is full of his interest in Japan and the Japanese language. I guess "curiosity" breeds language skills.
Australia also has a relatively low birth rate. I guess the main difference is that we have a high immigration rate, which staves off the ageing population effect.
At 21:20, the English translation for "losing that feeling" would probably be "desensitized" instead of "paralyzed". Although I hardly ever use that word lol 動画をありがとうございました！

I really appreciate all your videos! Interviews, shopping, random walks, all. They're great! I know that you've addressed it before, by nonetheless maybe you're interested in your crowd's opinion. I'm a huge proponent of learning kanji as soon as possible. It not only allows one to read and gives an invaluable insight into the language and its inner workings, but makes the vocabulary memorization a lot easier. You subtitle your videos with just hiragana. I think there's only a narrow slice of beginner language learners who benefit from kana-only subtitles. It's when your listening is not yet good enough to distinguish individual sounds or whole words. In that case with hiragana you can make sure you've heard it right. In case of you've videos they're (in my opinion) aimed at intermediate and advanced learners, people who know enough words and grammar so that the videos are of benefit to them (they can make sense of the content even if they don't understand it all). The thing is that those people in most cases have enough kanji under their belt so that hiragana-only subtitles are hard to read and follow. I think furigana is the way to go - it's still helpful to beginners (and also makes them used to how Japanese looks like) and also to intermediate and advances learners. Surely I'm biased here because I based the above solely on my own observations. I consider myself an intermediate Japanese learner. I know enough kanji so that I would be able to make sense of the words I don't know, trying to guess their meanings. Because I don't have any problems with distinguishing the words I don't find hiragana-only subtitles useful. They're really hard to follow. I would like to read a Japanese script, but without kanji in it I have to refer to the english translation. Again, I really appreciate your content! I know how much effort it takes to prepare subtitles. If kanji+furigana would increase your workload too much - don't worry about it! Thanks!
I sincerely thank you for your opinion to me. I feel that this channel is supported by people like you, who are passionate about learning Japanese. I also feel I should make and post videos with subtitles using Kanji. But there are a lot of videos with such ordinary subtitles not only on TH-cam and Netflix, but all over the world, right ? And kanji subtitles with furigana are quite labor for me as a general office worker. Certainly, as you say, japanese sentences without Kanji are difficult to read and follow. Moreover, kanji should be used for all learners to learn what Japanese is. Of course I understand that. However, there are many people who cannot be interested in learning Japanese because they watch videos with Kanji subtitles and recognize that learning Japanese is extremely difficult. I think maybe the main issue her A Pid is a practical one, do you know of a good furigana text tool that could be used for formatting the text to go on a video? Simple word editors like Google Docs don't do furigana. I imagine there must be a fairly automated option out there, someone might be able to suggest something...I would be interested to know for my own channel also.
These videos have been nothing but useful! Just an idea out here! Would it be possible to make videos with subtitles as an option, but the video uses visual cues to convey the meaning of the words/conversation? Maybe this would be useful. But thank you always for the videos.

Hi Alvin! You are in Japan, right? Where are you now? The best way to learn Japanese depends on the individual, but my foreign friends who speak Japanese always say that the best way is to learn basic grammar first, to make Japanese friends, and don't spend too much time learning kanji.

He got JLPT N1. The way he speaks is ¨very Japanese¨, and he knows so many words at the highest level among foreigners. He is a so-called Japanese otaku.
@@moshimoshi.yusuke ha Yusuke, in my own mind I've always tried to separate myself from the stereotype of otaku-dom. But maybe you're right. In terms of level, I did the JLPT N1 test years ago, and suspect I may have forgotten a lot of Kanji and improved my speaking quite a bit since. I still feel like a complete novice when I watch or read certain things!
My Japanese is still not very good, but I can understand quite well Peter-san. Being italian, for me the pronunciation of Japanese is easy and quite natural, but for english speaking people is not easy. Peter has a very good pronunciation. My wife is from Shirahama, prefecture of Wakayama, maybe you went there, Peter-san!.

僕も大体ユーチューブビデオを見るとき1.75倍ぐらいで聞きます。内容が分からなくてもそれぐらいのスピードで聞かないと落ち着かない、イライラしてしまう感じです。そういう時代になっちゃったかな。。。

These videos have been nothing but useful! Just an idea out here! Would it be possible to make videos with subtitles as an option, but the video uses visual cues to convey the meaning of the words/conversation? Maybe this would be useful. But thank you always for the videos.

1:26 なんで”ツアー”ってのは分かりませんでしたか。高低アクセントそれとも発音間違っていましたか。ゆーすけさんは言わなかったらたぶん気づかなかったけど平板で言ったと思います。
最初は「通話」と聞こえました。日本人が ツアー と言う場合「 ツゥァー」のように ツ 以外は小さな声で言います。Tour の最後の r は小さな声で ァー です。僕の耳にはピーターさんが「ツゥーワァ」と言ったように聞こえたので「ツウワ？」と聞き返しました。

He got JLPT N1. The way he speaks is ¨very Japanese¨, and he knows so many words at the highest level among foreigners.
He is a so-called Japanese otaku.
@@moshimoshi.yusuke ha Yusuke, in my own mind I've always tried to separate myself from the stereotype of otaku-dom. But maybe you're right.
In terms of level, I did the JLPT N1 test years ago, and suspect I may have forgotten a lot of Kanji and improved my speaking quite a bit since. I still feel like a complete novice when I watch or read certain things!

My Japanese is still not very good, but I can understand quite well Peter-san. Being italian, for me the pronunciation of Japanese is easy and quite natural, but for english speaking people is not easy. Peter has a very good pronunciation.
